- At the 2023 Literary Gala in New York City, PEN America honored author Salman Rushdie, its former president, who accepted the PEN Centenary Courage Award in person, his first public appearance since he was severely wounded in a knife attack nine months ago. Rushdie, speaking to 700 guests at the American Museum of Natural History, said PEN America and its mission to protect free expression was never “more important” in a time of book bans and censorship and issued a call to action: “Terrorism must not terrorize us. Violence must not deter us. La lutte continue. La lutta continua. The struggle goes on.”

Immense joy to see Mr. Salman Rushdie!!! Freedom of speech personified! I also thank those brave people who rushed to save him, and I thank Mr. Rushdie for always having the courage to speak out! I agree 100% on the danger of what is going on in Florida as he mentions here.

Only now, suddenly, does Sir Salman _sound_ like the old elderly sage that he is! Even in his early 70s, given his natural exuberance, he came across as a vigorous 40+ gentleman. I was afraid that he was going to lose the use of a hand, thankfully both are still functional. The crass dastardly act has, however, blinded him in one eye, and, most surprisingly, *mellowed his speaking Voice!* Our dearly beloved Mr. Rushdie his now closer to Homer than ever before; and even if most of his oeuvre were to be forgotten, very like the blind Hellenic poet, he shall be remembered in the centuries to come as the author of 2 of the defining classics of our times: _Midnight's Children_ and _The Satanic Verses_ .
