People would rather server hop and keep questing solo than group with the few people they can see in their sharded world for content they're competing over.

  • @Behrnahrd
    @Behrnahrd 6 років тому +46

    Beautiful video, Nixion.
I can relate to everything, including having time to think about the lore. Let see...
1- We didn't need content from Blizzard because the basic mechanic of the game provided so many interesting situations. Every play was different, with every class.
2- Because of the situations you got into each class had to be learned and played very different from one another. So, making alts and trying new classes was fun.
3- We also were not part of some franchise character's story. We were making our own stories.
4- The areas had their own local problems and mysteries, instead of all following a central theme/storyline or expansion world events, which made the world seem larger.
5- Because we had to walk from one place to the other, we had to learn to avoid mobs, discover paths etc.
6- Because there was no minimap aid, we had to read quests. And because there were less quests we didn't mind reading them.
7- The fact that mobs were difficult gave us the opportunity to choose from where to attack them, who to CC, watch for patrols, move patterns, pulling, LOS etc...
8- We also had to choose strategically where to sit to drink/eat
9- It was a huge pleasure, not just getting help from someone in a tight situation but also giving help. I remember that I loved helping my friends that I invited into the game with quests and leveling. That was so much fun! Now there is really no reason to...
Some cynic might say that you can do these things with "the XXX challenge" or whatever, but it's not the same, at all. When in Cata they changed the leveling exp and made the game 100% about end I immediately saw that the game had changed fundamentally. From then it was downhill to the collection of instanced/sharded/menued mini-games we have today. I wish they had grown wow more diagonally and not just vertically. More classes/ races, areas, professions, levels...
Well, thanks for the video. It expresses very well what a lot of us feel and can't easily express. This short list still seems like it's missing so much...

    • @Mick0Mania
      @Mick0Mania 6 років тому +4

I think Live WoW is great, and I don't think Vanilla is superior at all. But... The design philosophy of classic WoW is more up my alley. The leveling experience IS the game instead of being filler. Being forced to learn your class and get help while leveling teaches people things that live simply doesn't. I'm a very new WoW player as I started playing around MoP. Unless you make use of supplementary resources (guides etc.) there is absolutely no way you know how to use your class properly by the time you get to the endgame. I was just confused. Since there is no need to socialize while leveling up either, you hit a brick wall once you are done with the very linear and hand-holdy questing that feels more like filler than the actual meat of the game. I still enjoy pursiong transmog items and various cool toys and gadgets in the game, but I'm really looking forward to classic for that "classic" rpg experience.

yell yes. Tanaris, Un'goro, Winterspring, STV, some of my favorite zones while playing classic WoW. I would love to see Classic WoW continue through TBC and maybe WotLK then maybe veer off the retail WoW line with it's own fresh expansion that they would slowly develop on the side while we enjoy Classic and TBC at least. Cataclysm was okay, but MoP was really the beginning of the end. I'd really like to see them do an expansion for the Classic WoW line that keeps with the Classic WoW experience instead of trying to dumb the game down to make the game feel more "inclusive" or whatever they want to call it. Players should be expected to adapt to the challenges they face in the game, not cry to the game developer that it's too hard and it's preventing them from experiencing content.

Can't wait. This one video can easily explain why Vanilla was so good. It's because of this quote "necessity is the mother of invention." Because of the difficulty of the simpilest mobs & that mobs would group up, making them even harder. So you come up with a strategy in necessity. Mabye you group up, or mabye you go with Nixxiom & sneak past areas that are too hard and use crowd control to pull mobs in relative safety. Because retail is so much easier & simpler. You don't have the *NECESSITY* to come up with strategies, due to the lack of changes in the game-play. Even minute ones, like an ominous cave guarded by powerful foes. Or a few mobs being put together that forces you to utilise CC. Simpler & easier = worse.

Having the talent trees, getting to choose what I improved and how I played brought back fond memories of the first time I ever played WoW, when my very first character was a night elf rogue. I'd put all my points into skills that improved my stealth, letting me be as sneaky as possible, back before I knew what optimal builds were, or that such a thing as a build even existed. I saw the chance to be a sneaky elf, someone who would never be caught, and on the off chance that someone attacked them they could vanish into the shadows and escape from any danger. I missed that feeling, before the time when it became almost second nature to look up the latest most optimal gear and talent builds for raiding and dungeons.

I remember when I first played. I saw that portal, and immediately my mind thought:
    So, another world?
Had I known of other games, media, as a kid, that had those things?
Yes, of course. I had seen cartoons. They had portals. Portals meant traveling to another place.
In my mind, it was immediately associated with somewhere else.
And as I got to play, and the Npcs addressed me, in deep voices, calming ones.
I was completely taken away from planet earth.
Being a six year old child with difficulty reading, I do not really remember what I read.
But I do remember what I heard.
Teldrassil's music. Oh, that sweet lullaby, those sounds of tigers and grellkin, I was whisked away from a life of my awkward upbringing and changed forever. I was an earthly denizen no longer... I was an azerothian, an adventurer. A world where I could escape my mortal bonds and be the brave hero I always wanted to be. A world where I was somebody.
    And that feeling, was incredible.
It was not all great, as the pressure of not being able to respond to those typing to me as I grew older was increasingly frustrating, I taught myself to type, through world of warcraft. Through the intense need to give my hero a voice, I started with what I knew of the English alphabet, and in a few year's time, I was the fastest typer I knew.

I still remember the mine North of Azure Tower in Elwynn, or Northeast of Goldshire with Kobolds in It that you had to explore halfway through for a quest. When going there on my rogue/paladin/priest chars during classic wow 13 years ago I wanted to know what was beyond, but beyond were spider webs and dangereous mobs close to level 10, they were 8 or 9, possible a level 10 rare sometimes if I remember right and It was either that rare or a chest that had dropped there for me if I took the time to explore, sometimes cloth footwear would drop that'd reach up to your knees, that clothing I've remembered for 13 years now and have always went there to try and get them on new fresh alts just cause they look that cool to wear. And It felt dangereous going In there, spiders and all and then get rewarded with phat loot.
This is what I expect from Vanilla WoW, from a true WoW experience that sadly hasn't been delivered on In retail WoW for over 10 years now.

I started in WOTLK and a lot of the elements of Vanilla were in the classic zones of EK/Kalmidor. I started as a human warrior. Westfall was no joke for a noob back then. The area by the entrance to VC was full of Defias and if you had 3-4 mobs on you, you better be lucky. I also remember before the map showed you where to go, 1 FP per zone and 1 hr CD on your hearthstone.

See this blizzard. Next expansion re-introduce base spell damage to reduce player power scaling. A fireball from an NPC your level should do about 30-45% of a players HPs. Hide your quests all over the map. And most of all, bring back talent trees. Yes 90% of people went cookie cutter but the rest of us did great things with them.

Night Elf rogues are more difficult to detect and also got +1% Dodge and a second stealth ability(Shadowmeld) . Pretty handy, it's the best Alliance race for rogues PvP wise. Human rogue being the best for pve because of the sword/mace skill bonus (which increases your hit chance, very important in vanilla)

i did not start palying vanilla, but i started out in WOTLK, and i remmember creating human paladin called muffinhero(i was a kid) and leveling to 20 to get to Duskwood, and man,i will never forget that sensations and feelings when i stepped in that zone.Dark,shadow-wtisted part of Azeroth, loaded with mysteries and hazards. That feeling, when you start by killing wolfs and it slowly goes down to killing, skeletons, zombies in crypts, discovering that little lores which are all connected, discovering that tunnels in ravenhill catacombs. The atmosphere, which was filled with dread, the epic music, the quests, especially the big one called stalvan?i dont remember,in whichs end u got big 2 handed glowing sword called stalvans archerus i guess, and bigass portal in the center and dragon guarding it ...it was just amazing,i will never forget the feeling of just how massive is azeroth because such a little zone held so much mysteries.Good times

That's how you know you're a seasoned Rogue, when your first instinct is to stealth and pickpocket the mobs before attacking! Also remembering to apply poisons to your weapons before you leave town on your adventures, you develop a compulsion that's hard to break. Every single class has little tells like that, from Shamans keeping Lightning Shield up, Priests with maintaining Inner Fire, Warriors remembering to always have Battle Shout applied and Paladins having an excellent internal chronometer regarding their five minute Blessings!

This thought process is what I miss about classic WoW. There are no huge cut-scenes or dialogue to tell the player what's going on. I'm not saying that cut-scenes and dialogue are bad. I can appreciate the work that Blizzard has put into their storytelling over the years. However, a game that has too much hand-holding in the story department doesn't allow for a lot of individual thought. That's why I think people miss vanilla WoW so much. People back then were more creative with how they explored and actively looked for ways to entertain themselves. Reading a story is often more fun than watching a story because imagination comes into play. Even better is piecing together parts of the story by looking at the details that aren't spoon-fed to the reader. It's just way more fun to think about possibilities than to have all the answers from the start.
Along with that, the simplicity of the fact that getting ganged up by two or three mobs can be a death sentence is more realistic to me than being able to mow down ten mobs like we've been doing for the past several expansions. True, classic WoW is more simple in terms of gameplay and abilities for both the player and the enemies but that just encourages players to, again, think of ways to come out on top. It makes players think "Okay, odds are not in my favor, here are my abilities, what do I have that can help me get the upper hand in this situation?" Even better is when it works.

Thats the way I used to play my rogue when I started playing back in cata.
I would wander Azeroth and stealth into higher level zones just for the sake of adventure, and I tried to use any strategy to my advantage to get past thoose high level mobs.
I remember that time I ended up in blasted lands, being lvl 20ish and without knowing there was a thing called heartstone. Also, I didn't have a clue about the warcraft universe, and because of that I didnt know where there could be an alied faction city, or how to cross the ocean back to Kalimdor.
It was a hell of an adventure.

As a diehard Druid player during the original run of vanilla, I can attest to the joys and frustrations of stealthing through areas. It was slow... but fun and it saved my butt on numerous occasions, not just from the threat of mobs, but also the opposing faction. Unfortunately, if the opposing player was well above your level, you'd have to be like a mile away for them not to see you but I would try anyway, lol.
