My dad was a paramedic in Las Vegas NV for over 15 years and also a fire fighter paramedic here in new Mexico for a couple years. And this is something he complained about constantly! Stay safe 401!
Thank you, Officer401, for covering this. As a truck driver who makes every attempt to move over for vehicles on the side of the road, it angers me beyond belief when a car darts over into the lane I just left and speeds by. It never fails.
All our highways have matrix signs. So they will close off a lane if an officer or whoever is working there. Assholes still ignore the red cross indicating the lane is closed.
Unfortunaly common sense is not so common. It is a problem here in Norway too, but not that bad as you describe in the US. And we generally have lower speed limits, so cars flying by at 100-120 km/h and over (62-75 mph and over) is uncommon.
When I first started driving I didn't know it was a law. I just did it because I was concerned about accidently Hitting someone. It should be part of the test you take to get your learners, but it is not or at least wasn't part of mine.
The 'Move Over Law' isn't really enforced in California since its adoption in 2010. Requiring all drivers to 'move over' a lane immediately adjacent to a stationary emergency vehicle, tow truck or CalTrans vehicle displaying emergency lights. Even so, I ALWAYS move over! It's quite scary when I notice that I'm literally the only one that does it.
Thanks for answering the question i had , i was wondering if we had that law here in cali....i use to work for the city and people in California drive like assholes..we could be working in a lane, have cones up and the lights on the truck..people would still haul ass..some would even drive in our work area just to get around traffic..then you yell at them they act like you are the blame ..i know 2 car's that got a shovel to the side.
3 ISP troopers killed in the first 3 months of 2019 on traffic stops. Thanks for helping get the word out. I'm a volunteer firefighter, and I will say it is better than it used to be, but still something I think about every time I leave my family for an interstate call.
I’m a police explorer and I find your videos extremely funny, educational and just amazing to watch. Thanks for all you do. Also thank you for making such important videos like this one. Keep it up 🖤💙🖤
All the respect in the world for you! I have had flats I have changed on the side of the road it is Scary how dangerous it is and how close people are to you!
I stay with wreckers after they arrive on scene to manage traffic for them for the very reason that they are at the same risk as LEOs. Stay safe out there Roj.
I have had way to many close calls in 24 years brother, even repossessions. Think im about to go back to bounty hunting, hell its definitely safer than towing......lol. Our state patrol and Sheriff is pretty good about blocking for us a lot of time on the Interstate.
I can already see instructors showing this video to future cops in training and even when citizens are applying for their permits and license😎🙌 well done man
I’m from Illinois I’m really glad you did this video. My husband is also a Leo. But man sometimes people are assholes and will not let you merge over. So I opt to reduce speed, crawl past, and give as much room as I possibly can. Because honestly sometimes that is all you can do.
Ohio we have the Slow Down Move Over. I'm training to start towing, some of the close call stories are crazy, glad that people are starting to wisen up
I used to drive a service truck on the PA turnpike and we would have troopers sit in front of our trucks while we were working to do the same thing, the would pop people left and right for move over violations
Thank you!!! I'm from Denmark working as a tow truck operator & firefighter & this is really need to know stuff all around the world's roadways! Take care and take care out there - remember the only person you really can rely on is yourself & your eyes. Peace.
I pulled over for 2 officers and when trying to merge back into traffic was almost hit by a driver that didn't move over and FHP was right there to pull them over. Rare but i enjoyed seeing them pulled over. Another great video. Thank you for putting your life in danger everyday
This Law is in the Highway Traffic Act in Ontario Canada, and it’s on ALL roads! It’s different in that you HAVE to SLOW DOWN, no matter what, as well as leave A LANE’s worth of space between! It’s a large ticket, officer discretion of course, but for as long as I have lived, I have NEVER heard a story of officers being hit because of this law. It works! It’s for safety!
Hey Officer 401, I've been subscribed to your channel for a long time and watching your videos too, I'm a former PO (overseas) and actually I'm a Florida DOT Road Ranger? I want to thank you for spreading the word about the Move over law because there are thousands of people that ignore about it. My truck was hit on the right shoulder some months ago by a lady on the phone not paying attention to the road and she didn't see my truck which by the way has the arrow board, beacons and traffic cones displayed. Thanks God I was beyond the truck. Thanks again for the excellent job. Be safe out there.
Collecting revenue for a couple mph over or rolling through a stop is one thing......Fining the shit out of someone that is going to end up killing you is another and I would do the same.
As a FF/EMT in the state of Illinois I’m so happy to see someone make a video about this. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been on the interstate and people are flying by my rig with no regard for our safety!!!
Thank you for talking about this!! I’m a tow operator and I cant express this enough! I lost a dear friend of mind due to someone simply not moving over and they were texting......
THANK YOU for making this video! Living in upstate New York it's a much needed law and I wish more people obey that law in particular. I help disabled vehicles on the side of the road all the time. I have several hazard lights and reflective gear, yet majority of people don't slow down and move over. I hope this video goes viral!!
To the ISP trooper; Thank you for asking Officer401 to to this! Sincerely, Former Seasonal Illinois DOT Construction Inspector and Fatal Crash Data Analytics Investigator. I have done way to many investigations and inquires into wrecks involving not only Police, Fire, and EMS, but Construction/Maintainers. Not many think it applies to Construction/Maintenance workers, but it does. Slow down, Move Over. It's the Law! and Drive 45, keep us alive!
Can't thank you enough for this video, sir! I drive all over I75 in south Florida everyday and it amazes me when i see people move over. This video will save a countless number of lives.
Thank you officer401 for posting this , I am a towing operator in the st.louis area for Missouri and illinois... way to many close calls and to many disregard the saftey for others ... awareness needs to spread! I believe we are at 24 deaths for 2019 for the USA tow operators which is rediculous SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER!
officer401 - ThANk YoU So MUCh!! My mother taught me to move over the Move Over Law as a child. I'm 49. I live in Florida State so as you know, in the state of Florida, it's one of the number one car accident fatality states in the nation. Thank you for your video.
From a citizen in southern Illinois I'm really glad you did a video on this, we've had multiple accidents with people not moving over and I think your leap frog idea was a great way to basically tell the people who don't look at new laws that they need to move over now.
In Louisiana you are supposed to get over no matter what if there is a vehicle stopped on the side of the road you are supposed to either get over or slow down depending on the situation
Great video. I'm from South Dakota (we have the pull over law) and it blows my mind that so many drivers don't have, let alone use, common sense for safety!!
Thank you for posting this. When I worked traffic I had a patrol car struck by a drunk when we pulled over a traffic stop. Another time directing traffic near a parade route I was almost struck by a drive that was rubber necking and that was before cell phones. Traffic stops to me are as dangerious as a domestic violence call.
I'm glad you did this video officer 401, I'm a georgia resident and I see people fail to move over almost every day, I hope the day never comes where I see an officer struck.
I'm glad you did this video. In Texas the move over law is if you cant move over to the opposite lane then you have to go 20 mph under the posted speed limit sign.
Illinois resident here. We have lost two troopers because people didn't follow Scott's law. Trooper Lambert and Trooper Jones-Story. Senseless deaths. It makes me angry. These are the details on the troopers Trooper Brooke Jones-Story had stopped another tractor-trailer and was conducting an inspection of it when another truck ran off the road, striking her patrol car before striking her and the truck she was inspecting. She served ISP for 12 years Trooper Christopher Lambert was struck and killed by a vehicle while investigating the scene of a prior crash on I-294 near Willow Road in Northbrook. He was en route home when he encountered the three-vehicle crash. He was standing outside of his vehicle when he was struck by another vehicle that failed to slow down or move over. He was a U.S. Army veteran
Thanks for the awesome Scott's Law video. Also here in Illinois if you can't move over, then slow down 20 below posted. But don't drop you're speed below then 20 MPH for the drivers safety
Thank you for the video! Our move over law here in Florida has been credited with saving countless lives! In Florida you must first make the effort to move over a lane away from any law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire apparatus, utility service vehicles, wreckers or any other vehicles “doing business” or slow down to 20 miles per hour under the posted speed limit. Thanks again for the video!
One of your best videos in a long time 401. I deliver supplies all around metro Atlanta and can’t tell u how often I see cars not getting over. Pisses me right the fuck off. Be safe, watch your 6!
Thank you! I live in rural Northern California (1 lane curvy roads) & I SLOW down & only turn on my flashers if it's a situation where oncoming traffic is packed & there's a LE stop. I also do it when there's an accident or road construction to warn the traffic behind me that I'm there and there's First Responders ahead.
The extremely frustrating thing in Arizona is that when I see the lights, I try to move over, but people think I’m trying to cut you off and refuse to let me move over. I drive a built Jeep, so it’s slow, and when I throw my blinker on to move over they fly up to me and hang next to me so I can’t move over. It is extremely frustrating
I’m from Illinois. They’ve really been pushing this law ever since the two troopers were killed a few weeks ago. Thanks for doing a video about this and explaining it to everyone! Rock on! 🤘
The move over law should also apply to lane hoggers - which is where someone hogs the outter lane of a highway and usually drive slower than traffic in the other lanes. Should do something about this also, not just for emergency vehicles at the side of the road
I just came into Illinois from North Carolina heading to Colorado for a job and this is very helpful thanks for letting me and my friends avoid a ticket!
So glad you did a video on this. First responder vehicle or not, I always move over or slow down if I can't. It seems like nobody here in Florida knows about this law (or they just don't care).
Thank you and thank “leap frogging.” In New York, there is a steady stream of traffic flying by State Troopers on the side of the road and I hold my breath every time I see it.
I live in south Mississippi and the majority if us have gotten so used to this law we try to move or slow down for any vehicle on the side of the road. We also have a bicyclist safety law that requires all drivers to give give bicyclists at least three feet of space as you pass or to slow down and hug left side of your lane when there isn't room to move over far enough.
Thank you for making this video. My friend Officer Darren Medlin was killed doing a traffic stop. I wish they would have moved over but unfortunately he was drunk as well. Please be safe out there.
Glad you made a video about this, a lady in my city recently was pulled over on one of our highways due to engine trouble. Another car was traveling in the next lane over and was not paying attention. This car didn’t move over and ended up hitting her car which crushed her against a wall on the freeway which killing her. The move over law is very reasonable.
Great video! I'll always move over, since the highways in New York are quite narrow, or in heavy traffic, I'll slow down to at least 20 mph below the speed limit.
I live in Illinois, they are taking it so seriously they are setting up test areas I call them. They have tow trucks with lights on, cops in front of them. If you don't get over/slow down, you get pulled over. I LOVE IT!
Here in Texas on I-10, I canted my truck behind my girlfriends broken down vehicle so I can come help her. Had my hazards on and moved some reflection construction cones to the shoulder line a good 200 feet back. Not many people moved over. I had to call dispatch on the phone to get a unit out so people would move over since it was such dangerous conditions and the shoulder was really small. We were two feet from the travel lane. Her car had to be towed too.
As an Illinois citizen, i would first like to thank you for talking about this. But would also like to add, the ONLY time i stay in the right lane with a vehicle off the side of the road, is when it's abandoned and I personally have seen it sitting for more than 2 days. At that point it generally also gets a sticker in the rear window for being abandoned.
As i am a living in the state of Illinois this video states how dangerous police work is. Ive seen accidents first hand that could have been avoided because of Scotts law.
Nevada here, we passed this law a couple of years ago. I've always moved over even before the law was in place and so did many nevadens. But. ...... now we have had half of California move here and they truly don't care about anyone or anything on the road. I'll be sharing this video to fb.
Awesome video , I learned why and why of a couple of questions that I have always had. Thanks for your service to help protect and keep the beautiful State of Georgia safe. I live in Ohio and see people not moving over. I was pulled over once for speed 😂 and the officer came to the passenger side to collect my information. We have had a couple of officers killed recently in Cincinnati and close by and it is always devistating for our community.
In Saskatchewan 🇨🇦 the move over law also applies to tow trucks, emergency vehicles etc, you also have to slow down to 60kmh and as a traffic project a police officer will hide their car in front of a tow truck and pull people over who don’t follow this law.
In Texas, I’ve been told that if you can’t move over, you have to go 20 mph under the speed limit. So, for example, if you’re on the highway going 75mph, and you can’t move over, you should only go up to 55mph while passing the traffic stop.
In Illinois Scotts law says you are suppose to go twenty under the speed limit if you are unable to move over. I'm from IL and it's awsome you did this video
I noticed on my drives on the high way, truckers and commuters would move into the next lane when some body was pulled over. So I just mimicked what they were doing. Did not know they had laws like these.
YT has these chips planted into your brain, so when youre thinking about something or talking about it. It pops up on your recommended. This is all based on a hunch but shit like this happend to me.
As a truck driver I'll move over for anything on the side of the road flashing lights or not, you just never know what's happening around thatstopped/ broke down vehicle. At times it can be a bit frustrating trying to move over when a smaller faster vehicle blocks us from being able to do so, I'll always leave my blinker light on and slow down and if permitted I'll use my engine brake to make some noise so that people are aware of my presence.
I drove an 18 wheeler OTR for 12 1/2 years and it's always been safe practice to move over for any vehicle on the side of the road unless it's abandon. I still practice it because i don't want to hurt / kill anyone or damage anyone else's property.
In Florida, if you’re not able to move over, you are required to slow down 20mph below the posted speed limit.
I move over if I can, depending on which location they're coming from
Same here in AZ
Same in Texas
Or 5mph if the speed limit is less than 20. We also include tow trucks in the list of vehicles you have to move over for.
Marc Musso really? I’m from Tucson and I can’t say I’ve ever heard this. Where did you see this?

I don't understand how this isn't common sense to some drivers. I have always done this. What if an officer took a step back?
Exactly!
Rebecca Adams There are just some people on the road who don’t deserve their drivers license.
All our highways have matrix signs. So they will close off a lane if an officer or whoever is working there. Assholes still ignore the red cross indicating the lane is closed.

In Ontario it applies to tow trucks as well, you must slow down to 40 km/h if the left lane is blocked

I just came into Illinois from North Carolina heading to Colorado for a job and this is very helpful thanks for letting me and my friends avoid a ticket!
I drive a tow truck and all I can say is GET 'EM BOYS! I have lost several friends because of negligent drivers. I appreciate the hell out of you man.
Hello from Leesburg Georgia! Also appreciate your service for your community and the state of Georgia!
Like Jimmy Hendrix said , “ Move over rover and let emergency services take over “. Ok he may have said Jimmy.
Florida is Move over or slow down 20 under the posted speed
Thank you for making this video. My friend Officer Darren Medlin was killed doing a traffic stop. I wish they would have moved over but unfortunately he was drunk as well. Please be safe out there.
Honest to God, I had never heard of this law and I'm 55 and live in Alabama. Glad I saw this video. Thanks!
Thank god you did a video on this! We had 3 troopers killed in our state this year
Glad you made a video about this, a lady in my city recently was pulled over on one of our highways due to engine trouble.
Fantastic video! Enough is enough with officers getting hit. MOVE OVER!
I live in Illinois, they are taking it so seriously they are setting up test areas I call them. They have tow trucks with lights on, cops in front of them. If you don't get over/slow down, you get pulled over. I LOVE IT!
I’m about to start working for a pd in Illinois, glad you made this video
Thank you for doing this video! So many people are so stubborn to move over
I'm from Illinois. Thank you for doing this video!
I work as an emt and this law is so important and protects first responders who are tasked with helping the public. I can’t help you if I’m dead.
In Texas, I’ve been told that if you can’t move over, you have to go 20 mph under the speed limit. So, for example, if you’re on the highway going 75mph, and you can’t move over, you should only go up to 55mph while passing the traffic stop.
yes! i drove from minnesota to california & every state i drove through had move over for emergency vehicle signs.
Great video 401. Good to finally get some clarity on this important law. Thank you.
Is it creepy that my family and I were just talking about the move over law in Georgia?
YT has these chips planted into your brain, so when youre thinking about something or talking about it. It pops up on your recommended. This is all based on a hunch but shit like this happend to me.
@@BootboysnHarleys Yes any child born after 2001 and if you were admitted to a hospital and stayed overnight. LOL
@@ypop417 i knew it
Thank you for your Service
Watching this on my break great video helping me get through the work day
As a truck driver I'll move over for anything on the side of the road flashing lights or not, you just never know what's happening around thatstopped/ broke down vehicle.
Hello from Woodstock,GA!
I got a Scott's law ticket in Illinois when I was 16 and didn't have drivers common sense. That's one law I'll never forget.
It's the same here in TN, you must move over for any vehicle emergency or personal if they are displaying hazard lights or emergency lights.
