As an American, yes the ref sucked but we should have done much better in both of the last two games.

.5 xg is not it. We showed grit and toughness but not skill or enterprise in attack. Funny how showing toughness is strange for our fans cause we tend to be soft. And those fans see it as a good game. If we had any sustained attack w that toughness then you can say we played well. Still not great. Just well
There was another wild moment in the 42nd minute where the ref waited to see if there was an advantage, then blew his whistle once Pulisic was away and running down the line.
It was like he was giving advantage until Pulisic actually beat the defender then called it back
The ref was shocking for sure. Pulling out a yellow card and then allowing advantage to be played is wild stuff. Later on the US had a clear breakaway and he didn’t allow advantage to be played. Just really bad all around.
Not too mention there were like 3 early fouls that should have been yellows for Uruguay. Like holding back flo on breakaway. It’s not why we lost but damn that guy was about as bad as I’ve seen.

The Panama game was brutal. Tim Weah got a straight red out of frustration in the 18th minute and the game completely flipped on its head. 68 minutes with 10 men was ended up being too much to handle. They still have to get at least a draw there tho especially after scoring first after the red. The refs in this match were frustrating for sure. Tyler Adam’s got a yellow with the only contact being the opposing players studs going right into his ankle on the follow thru. There were at least 2 different times where the USA were fouled, the ref played advantage and then only blew it dead when the USA broke away up field. Also the ref gave a yellow then allowed play on which nearly led to a goal. I’ve never seen before in my life. Earlier in the game Folarin Balogun our top striker who has scored in each game made an off side run and got clobbered in between the defender and the goalie. He had to leave the game leaving us with the lesser quality Pepi up top for majority of the game. With that being said regardless the USA didn’t do enough to get thru. Overall very frustrating results this one hurts a lot. Gotta make some changes ahead of the World Cup.

@@ttm9227 they lost because of a stupid red card, but Tyler Adams at the postgame press conference admitted that emotional composure is never coached or addressed. So I will not remove blame from Weah for a really stupid decision, but I will also pile on another thing to blame on Berhalter for never coaching that, especially when we all know these Copa matches would be firey like they always are.

They still should have gotten a result. US scored first, while down a man. Yeah, it gets harder the longer the match goes on, but they were capable of getting a draw, if not winning, even under those circumstances. And they should’ve beaten Bolivia 4-0, maybe even 5-0.
It's kinda crazy how Uruguay always has a decent to good team when you consider the entire country has a population of only 3.5 million.

They hosted and won the first ever world cup. They are a footballing nation, its their culture. Many Americans cant fathom small countries like Spain, Uruguay, or Italy having one to multiple world cups because that's how kids grow up in those countries, with a ball at their feet.

The referee was terrible, but we didn't lose because of the ref. Berhalter needs to be fired, and players other than Pulisic need to step up.

Correct! Quality teams know all they have to do is shut down Pulisic and the attacked will be nullified for the most part. We need more players to step up. The success of the US team is determined by whether or not Pulisic has a good game. Another issue is the team in general is still very young of age and the pressure got to them imo. Everyone, had a heavy first touch. When Weah got the red card and Berhalter resulted to boom ball against Panama the entire quality of the team dropped. They had that fire to go score and play good football, but that mentality was stripped from them as soon as Gregg deployed his chicken shit just kick it up field tactics. Turner and Gregg have to go. Turner might be a nice guy and a good shot stopper, but I can play better with my weak foot than he can with his strong foot. His tactical ability is awful. The guy didn’t start playing til he was 16 years old. It was obvious other teams tactics were to force the pass back to Turner and then press the hell out of him, which worked, Turner would panic every time. Double or triple up on Pulisic, and press the hell out of Richards and Turner. Richards I am on the fence about. I think he had a bad tournament, but imo it was a mental thing, he was nervous and just in awful form. At least he starts for Palace!! I’ll take Steffen back any day before Turner (his ability on the ball is that bad, even has horrible form when he kicks). So yeah, Berhalter, Turner need to go ASAP

The entire tournament came down to Tim Weah getting the red card against Panama. When he made that bone-headed decision I knew instantly it was over for the US in Copa America. Hard to get a result against a competent side with 10 men. Ask the '98 England WC squad.
Weah deserves a lot of blame, but Berhalter's decision to try and park the bus for the entire second half and invite pressure deserves just as much. We scored a man down, and outplayed Panama, but then decided to allow them the ball until they finally got a lucky goal. Not saying Weah doesn't deserve blame, but even a man down we should be at least drawing with Panama.
It seemed like the refs were quick to call every little thing against Canada, USA and Mexico while allowing the opponents to get away with a lot. The refs even let a player get away with a headbutt against Canada and that was after the ref went to check VAR.
It’s not even the fact that we were knocked out that we are upset, it’s just the principal of it. The principal of how bad that ref was.
He apparently only had done less than ten professional international matches before this one.
When a ref makes an obvious bad call /no-call then shows his bias by not shaking hands with players will the fifa or whatever governing body do anything to correct the issue or do they stand by bias &/or corruption? I’m pretty sure I know the answer I’m just hoping there’s one league in the world that does the right thing no matter what and stands by right and not refs
This was a terrible highlights package! Firstly the US dominated the first half in possession and created some great chances. But more importantly this doesn't show the multiple replays of the disgraceful ref pulling a Yellow on Tyler Adams after he clearly was the one who got stepped on and then pocketing the card suddenly to allow Uruguay to take a shot blocked by a US defender. Plus, the replays clearly showed that Uruguay was offside and it was even reviewed in the booth and the goal was still allowed. And that's the way it was the whole night.
The officiating in every sport has gotten worse at such an insane rate over the last 10 years.
Can someone explain to me how CONMEBOL gets more benefit from Panama qualifying than the US? It seems irrational, I mean the cup is organized in the US, doesn't that show conmebol's agenda?
That highlight video left out all of the worst calls aside from the goal. The ref pulled out a yellow card to book an American and then allowed Uruguay to play the advantage near the box mid booking.
Tim Weah’s red is what killed us
In the deciding VAR picture (using cross-hair Legacy system), the US defender's leg and foot were stretched far back to where the Uruguayan's front knee was. At that instant, they were just about even (the two lines from each point touched) and the "benefit of the doubt" call went to the attacker. The torso of the Uruguayan player was clearly ahead of the American's, but that's irrelevant. Even so, with a 0-0 result, the US wouldn't have advanced. The game is played on the pitch, not on a ranking sheet.
Early on Adamas got his foot stepped on and got a yellow card for it, that was early in the first half. that will change how he plays the entire game obviously. You have a play where there's a call in the box and Pulisic gets the ball out wide and they whistle it back when he should have had advantage. The obvious offside goal. Uruguay had like 22 fouls or some outrageous number without a yellow card, while the US had 3 yellows on 10. Don't remember the exact numbers now. there was obviously major bias.
After I saw berhalter trying to tell the players the score of the other game, I knew we were finished. He cannot manage another game for the U.S. if the federation has any respect for its fans.
For me that said it all. If the mindset is relying on other teams for a result, you're not playing the right way.

Our coach led our boys to this point. Need a coaching change so we don't have to be the laughing stock of the world cup also. USA was ranked 11th and Uruguay was ranked 14th going into this game..... The rankings don't properly reflect the teams and how they play, the US proved that
Not sure how much of a difference it would've made, but Tim Weah got ejected from the Panama match after clocking a someone in the back of the neck. I get tensions were high that match, but you cannot do those types of actions.

The Panama match we were down to ten men after 18min. Time Weah punched an opponent in the back of the head. Pretty much set the path.
In the words of Roger Bennett of The Men In Blazers:
“I’d bite your arm off to be as crap as England right now.”
He isnt offside watch all the angles and you can see that he isnt.
The reason he did not call offside on the goal was that the header was considered a shot on goal rather than a pass forward. While the player who eventually scored was in an offside position at the time of the header, once the ball bounces off the goalkeeper, it is now in front of the Uruguay player, and so when he plays the ball, he is on side.
I am not denying there were several questionable calls, but just explaining the rationale of VAR ref why they finally decided he was on side for the goal.
There was controversy with the ref Ortega back in 2022 during the Copa Libertadores match. He awarded a match-winning penalty to Boca Juniors. It shouln't have been a pk because the keeper touched the ball first. After the match Bolivian police searched the ref's booth and seized several Boca Juniors shirts given to him.
This tournament has been devastating for me. First time I have been let down my national team. I’m new to the sport and this game left me feeling so down
I’ve been watching the team since the 2010 World Cup. This hurt as bad as failing to qualify for the 2018 WC.
Hey, fancy seeing you here! I followed a similar path to yourself about 15-ish years ago (except that I started watching MLS before the European leagues), and I can tell you that I've lived through a few heart-wrenching moments--the worst was being knocked out of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after losing against Trinidad and Tobago and having Panama beat Costa Rica...with the help of a ghost goal that replays clearly showed never crossed the line. Oh well, that was before VAR. Also being up 2-0 against Mexico at halftime of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final and then losing 4-2.
But the thing to understand is, the results the USA got prior to the last 10 years were huge accomplishments, because the program just wasn't what it is now. When I started watching, we didn't have college players like in the 1980s, but we only had a handful of players in Europe's top 5 leagues (maybe 2-ish on teams that could even think about the Champions League knockout stages, and I'm guessing no more than 5-6 playing in the Champions League and Europa League combined--and three of them were goalkeepers). The rivalry with Mexico was so one-sided in Mexico's favor--and always had been--that when we came away with a 0-0 draw away in Mexico City in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, it felt like a huge win.
The USA had a knack for punching well above their weight on the biggest stages--basically the opposite of what you've seen so far--making the World Cup knockout stage when not favored to do so, and once beating Mexico to advance to the quarterfinals in 2002 before being knocked out by a heavily-favored Germany in a 1-0 loss that was a MUCH better-than-expected result for the US (though it could've been even better if the ref hadn't let a German player get away with blocking a US shot on the goal line with his arm--that would've been a red card+penalty with VAR).

Panama is not a bad team and they have improved a bunch. Easily have overtaken Costa Rica as the best team in Central America. But at the same time, Panama is 5-4-17 all time against the US. Just a terrible loss.
Daz actually has it pretty might spot on about the USMNT. We've got a quality players, but we underachieve. Our manager Gregg Berhalter got in an embarrassing public spat with Gio Reyna's parents after the 2022 WC, part of which was the Reynas' fault... but THEN, Berhalter goes to a "leadershihp conference" and talks there about his problems with Gio, which should've stayed in the USA locker room! USA Soccer says they're re-evaluating his position, and then after a "global search" decides that Berhalter is still the best coach and re-hires him. WTF. And now the team goes and gets knocked out in the group stage of the Copa America because they shat the bed against Panama? Embarrassing.

That referee had a bad game. But it is easy to blame de referee when you had a bad game. Usa did very little against uruguay, i think they played a more physical game.
They showed the VAR, it was not offside, but easy to fall into blaming the ref

It's especially bad getting knocked out as hosts because we're the first hosts to get knocked out in the group stage in the history of this tournament dating back to its inception in 1916.
And it hasn't always been quadrennial, this is the 48th time it's been held.
Of course a lot of those times it was being held by Brazil or Argentina, but still.

The handshake refusal, you need to see the full video where just before Pulisic gestures to the ref to go join the Uruguay team celebration, insinuating he was impartial. Very disrespectful of Pulisic, so I understand the ref's hesitation to shake hands when Pulisic had just insuted him moments before (actually the entire game).

The thing we can take away from this as a silver lining is that Berhaulter will be sacked and we will have an opportunity to get a proper manager.
If you’ve watched much US soccer, you’re used to this kind of treatment. The team should be used to it but it still has to break your back at some point.
The announcers said it was only the 7th match the ref had done. One moment in the game he was giving a yellow and didn’t stop the game and allowed Uruguay to take a free kick while he was in the middle of giving a yellow card. Tyler Adams got stepped on and got a yellow. I’ve never seen a ref blow every single call. Normally there are 1-2 calls that could go either way but this ref missed every single call.
These freaking COPA games are ridiculous, did u c the Uruguay Brazil game and all the fouls and all the fouls that weren’t called? 41 called and at least 20 misssed, its like they aren’t playing soccer or football but just hacking down trees on the field. This shit was ridiculous

The ref refused to shake Puli's hand... after Puli told him he should be off celebrating with the Uruguayans. I understand saying it out of frustration, but at that point just skip the handshake.
You mention the big names on the US, including Tim Weah. He is a great player, but Weah had a stupid red card early in the Panama match and was suspended for this match.
Yeah... the official was bad... but I think we lost when Balogun went out. He really seemed to be the only US player that showed up all tournament.
The USSF needs to be investigated and ultimately replaced if US association football is to advance.

The way the entire Copa Cup has been officiated against USA and Canada has been criminal. At this point I think it's intentional and institutional.

Berhalter gives Southgate a run for his money as far as terrible tactics with no idea of how to score Berhalter thinks he is Pep and its all about his system and it restricts them terribly the last time we have played really well was right before they rehired him for whatever reason(besides his brother being on USSF board). Even players who aren't part of Berhalter's leadership squad have said how hard the system is to remember in such a short amount of time and it shows they look lost and confused slowing down every transition opportunity just to horse shoe pass around the box to either lose the ball or hit a cross to short players an actual coach is a must so we can at least see if we have the talent to compete at a decent level
did not show it. the ref pulled out the yellow card and showed it to the US player, the player stopped and the ref let play continue as he held out the yellow card. almost a goal as that US defender obeyed the ref and his man took a shot. ref let it happen. that ref will never work again.
To be fair every ref is corrupt to all teams. The USA ref is actually lenient to the US compare to other refs officiating other South Americans. The he word violence in these refs don’t exist. You can see the Uruguay and Brazilian player practically doing ufc in the pitch. No fouls

A few American thoughts:

2) The USA has a history of getting wrecked by awful referee decisions in the biggest moments: Losing against Germany in the 2002 World Cup quarters (still the farthest they've made it since 1930) after a German player got away with committing a goal-line clearance with his arm, getting eliminated from the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after Panama leapfrogged them with the help of a goal against Costa Rica that didn't even come close to crossing the line, and now this.
3) The fact that we have our coach instead of Canada's coach is 100% inside connections. Gregg Berhalter's brother Jay was an insider when Gregg was hired. Jesse Marsch (an American, recently became Canada's head coach after the USA re-hired Gregg) was very professional about not claiming to want the USA job when it was vacant after the World Cup, but I feel confident that he would've taken it if they'd offered it to him.
4) You HAVE to watch the highlights of the Panama game, just to get a feel for just how chippy it was, and why Tim Weah got sent off. Kinda crazy how the ref wasn't really protecting our players very well.
5) A lot of US fans are holding out hope that this result gets us a coaching change at long last; for me, it'd be a bit frustrating if that happened only now that Jesse Marsch is off the table. At any rate, I'm rooting for him and Canada now just because he arguably would've had a chance at landing the USMNT job if not for Gregg's inside connections.

American here. Yes the refereeing was atrocious but our play was borderline worse. Pulisic was terrible. Tough blow for our organization & a huge set back to our progress. Love the content
Some articles have revealed what Pulisic said to the ref that led to the refusal of the handshake. Apparently, Pulisic told the ref why the ref isn't joining the Uruguayan players to celebrate with them, since he helped them win the game.
That's disrespectful of Pulisic and that's disrespectful of the ref as well for refusing to shake hands even if he was mad about the statement.
But, let's be real for a moment. The U.S would have never gotten out of the group stage even with a 0-0 tie. They had some hope when Bolivia equalized with Panama, but when Panama got the lead back, and then doubled it, the U.S was stuck in a position where they had to beat Uruguay by 2 goals with only 5 minutes remaining. In what realm of reality, would that be possible?!
The U.S had to play to win, but they went looking for a tie. The blame is on them.

Aidan. you are correct that Tyler Adams had his ankle stepped on and he was the one that got a yellow card. There was another ridiculous call where a Uruguayan player got tackled by a US player and Ortega blew the whistle to stop play. Another Uruguayan player picked the ball up and started play up without Ortega starting it and Ortega was just giving US yellow card. The Uruguayan players just continued and Ortega just allowed it and ran after them. If it weren't for Ream's amazing defensive play they would have scored. The US players had stopped per Ortega and were completely not ready. It was ridiculous! The announcers were in disbelief. All said though our coach sucks and needs sacked immediately!!
As someone who used to ref for multiple years in my opinion the Adams yellow is one of the only decisions I agree with. Adams takes a heavy touch, loses the ball and has to lunge to try to get there before Olivera and he doesn’t. It’s a ball there to be challenged for, both go in hard and olivera gets there first, giving him the right to play the ball. He clears it and in the natural motion of doing so Adams impedes him by lunging into his path. Yes he catches Adams with his studs but that doesn’t necessarily make it a foul , fouls are judged on the action alone, not the result or injury. M
To be fair in the last year or so especially in the premier league these have started going against the player who wins the ball(olivera) for dangerous play but I think that’s a poor ruling. We can’t seriously except players to immediately stop their momentum when the game is moving so fast and they are off balance
The officiating was horrible but it was bad both ways. Nandez got a backhand to the face that wasn't called and R. Araujo got an elbow to his face that was missed as well. De LaCruz was mauled every time he got close to the ball. Both teams played physical.
I ask this...what benefit is there to the tournament, to the organizers, to sponsors, to apparel and souvenir suppliers to have Uruguay get through to the next round rather than the USA where they could profit exponentially more. I've read many comments about Uruguay being favoured etc...when the truth is that it was just a bad referee and a very physical game.

@@CG68810 That would make sense if it was any other country but Uruguay. There’s only 3.4 million of them. That’s not a significant number when your talking $. There isn’t a very large Uruguayan population in the US aside from 14k in Florida and 10k in New jersey. Money wise it’s not very profitable if Uruguay goes far. Just economics

Also, if you are talking about viewership $ there will be way more people internationally wanting to watch Uruguay play instead of the US due to their higher level and more internationally know players. The viewership in the US is low. They'd rather watch NASCAR.
Yea it sucked for us and it doesnt help that the ref was shit. That highlight vid doesnt do the match justice, we came out swingin in that match and there were injuries. There was a point when arrowhead stadium started to chant " ref you suck " lol highlight for me

The defenders extended foot is what kept the goal scorer onside. Univision (Mexican TV) had a great angle.
It was literally off but sure if that's what you think. Multiple replays and still frames show it was off.
@ZaneEX The line that was superimposed over a still frame showed that the foot kept the Uruguay player onsides, it was only by a few inches, but that is how VAR works. They showed the superimposed line on the Univision broadcast, not sure if it was shown on FS1.

This video doesn't show half of the terrible calls I think the 1st half US had 4 fouls 2 yellows neither of which should have been and Uruguay had 14 with no cards and they were taking out players everytime we made progress the ref has had some issues before and it was his 7th international game ever. Can't blame the refs for the loss it was all bad
Man these were terrible highlights.. USA actually had more control of the match but didn’t show a single first half highlight.. or many trash calls, like the ref allowing play to restart while showing a yellow card to a us player 😂

People saying the usa would have still been kicked out with a better ref but thats not the point. Why should a corrupt ref be allowed to officiate games. Sure he didnt change the outcome this game but whats to say he wont in future games
