this conversation is as much of a joke as the US Soccer program.
how these two had a conversation about the failures of the US Soccer program and why players haven't been developed without even discussing for one second about the grassroots/travel team culture of ridiculous fees where only kids of the rich can afford to play a game where you need nothing other than a ball is beyond me. it's clear that the US sucks at soccer due to this. In the MLS currently, there are 2 coaches that did coach a high level: Tata Martino (who did coach at Barcelona), and Dean Smith (Real Premier League pedigree). This is the realistic expectation of coaches that you can get.

Sure you get more social media likes playing in the EPL but you don’t learn anything there and the play is terrible. All World Cup winners in the last 30 years have never had squads with heavy EPL players. 2006 Italy played in Serie A, 2010 Spain played in La Liga, 2014 Germany played in the Bundesliga, 2018 France played in La Liga and Ligue 1, 2022 Argentina played in La Liga and Serie A. Rob and Bill, watch your own podcast and listen to what you are saying. To summarize, you are both basically saying the players have the ability at this level but are lacking grit, direction, strategy, etc. But then you are saying it may not be Berhalter's fault, you are resting the mediocrity on the players. Think about the difference between leadership and management. A leader can pull the intangibles out of a team, a manager cannot. USMNT has been lacking true leadership for some time. I also think Alexi Lalas is dead wrong in his evaluation of the 1994(?) team to this team. From a willingness to fight, absolutely the 94' team had more bite to them. But there is no way they have the skill, vision, athleticism that today's team has. Period. What is needed is a leader to bring this group together. Maybe you are close or friends with Berhalter and cherish his friendship over the responsibility of being a journalist. But I would challenge you to listen to your own words and rethink what you are saying.

U.S. soccer stakeholders are not able to have honest conversations. It's not (just) about having a batman as Rob Stone is saying. It is also not about coaching. It is about TALENT and CULTURE. As Bill alluded, if Christian Pulisic is your best player, he's "Aaron Gordon" and you're a lottery team. Good teams have multiple opportunities at goal which is why they end up converting two or three every game. On the other hand, Christian Pulisic is your third best player, you're competitive for a World Cup trophy.
I'm Nigerian. We have a soccer culture, but the opposite problem of the U.S., which is a complete lack of systemic attention, funding and process with our NFA. U.S. has system, but no actual culture, where you learn the tricky fouls etc. playing on the yard. To me, the U.S team is always the equivalent of a bunch of decent Rec Center basketball kids (regardless of ethnic background) going to play outside against "ballers" at the Rucker with the noise, trash talk, heat and chain nets. All around the world, including Europe, football/Soccer is rough, a trench sport. Balogun wouldn't even make the field for Nigeria Super Eagles and we're pretty down bad at this point so for him to be a sorta U.S. team difference maker... welp.

The problem is we in the USA only care if we have a star player.

But you can make the argument that the players themselves have mostly progressed with their clubs. Many of them not only earning starting roles but playing well In good leagues. How on earth do these players progress, and get better since the WC and arguable take a step back and play terrible as a team against inferior sides ? These guys talk as if our players.are not getting playing time or not progressing in their clubs. And that’s not the reality! Yet they can’t beat Panama????? The problems exist from the top to the coaching. Corruption, nepotism bad coaching and culture is the problem. It affects the play of the team.

No competent football manager worth his salt would touch the US National team with asbestos gloves. It's a direct path to the toilet.

You cannot have a great team at the top without having talent and good coaches at the base of the pyramid. The reason the US women have been top of the world for a long time was for exactlybthe same reason: outside the US soccer as a women’s sport has always been tiny while it was big in the US.

US women WERE ON TOP FOR A LONG TIME. Past tense. Didn’t they flame out in the Women’s World Cup after suing its own federation bc of greed by bitches?

The US will never get to that level. Soccer is culture and heritage. Unfortunately, the big teams have over 100 years head start to perfect their game.

Tim weah is the one that costs United States Copa America. He never did something like this with Juventus, and come out here and start punching people as great as Tim weah is. Yes, we do understand that the panama player does what exactly his coach told him to do to make sure a great player like Tim weah did not breathe in that field and the panama player did exactly what he was taught to do by his coach and Tim Weah got angry and punched him with a red card and that was it today

Klopp. One word - stop. That comment sums up the delusional attitude in regards to the quality the US team contains and will contain in 2 years. Klopp. Was there smoke clouding the camera shots? To make that statement you need to be smoking something.

America, Introduce a relegation/promotion system in all your sports. You will be able to compete internationally in sports you didnt invent. but It will make franchise values unstable and i dont see Americans doing anything to mess up the money , thats a sin in America.

Of course Rob Stone doesn't want to blame Berhalter. The coach doesn't know how to make the most of the talent he has.
Hes not good at in game changes and subs.
The players deserve blame too but the coach just is levels below where we need him to be.

The irony is the lower levels of football are as you described at the beginning. Players running about, giving everything. The top level of the game is not played like that. Players are too good. Sounds like you want the USA to play like a bunch of amateur school boys. Top players do not bother challenging unless it is the right time to press, because they know they are wasting energy and the ball wont be there when they arrive. I think your problem is that you have a very mediocre team with average talent. They will give anyone a game, but against the good teams will get found out. The only solution is build the football infrastructure at the grassroots and develop. Look at Japan if you want a good model.

They need stop comparing their system to germany or england or france. Usa needs to be horrible. You are right. They should follow what japan is doing. Even better. Uruguay. 4 of their players play for flamengo in brasil. A great club. USA media doesnt mention because its not european club. They look at england n germany like demi gods. Way these guys r talking. U can tell they act arrogant. Thats american mentality. When in reality they need to follow a japan, uruguay, why not look at what venezuela has done or better, colombia. How in 4 years. They change their style. Remember they miss world cup n had several manager changes. Look at them now.
Usa wont do that. Because they are not european nations.
