  • My daily life as a Mandarin student in Yangshuo, Guilin, China: I wake up around 7:30am, eat 肠粉 (rice noodle roll) for breakfast, do my homework & self study, eat lunch in the school cafeteria, then go to class from 2pm to 4:35pm. After class, I go explore a massive cave near school, and finish off the evening with a delicious 烧烤 (barbecue) dinner! Just a standard day :)

      A friend of mine came over here when she was pretty young, about 4 or 5- when she went to China in her mid-20s, even though she spoke Chinese here and there, they told her she spoke like a 5 year old.
      A Korean friend was talking to a friend of mine- Korean spoken in the house, but she grew up most of her life here in the states, she was floored when a Jewish friend of mine spoke Korean with better pronunciation and fluency than she does.
      Most of my family is Puerto Rican, I can't speak Spanish to save my life- and even if I'm reading it, or repeating after someone, my pronunciation is freakin' hilarious...
      Genetics definitely doesn't make speaking a language easier automatically :)

      eventhorizon yeah had a family member constantly brag that he was the epicenter of world-culture because he claimed that he was from Israel and could speak Hebrew. When we all went to Israel, he spoke like a small child and it turns out he moved away when he was 5.
      It’s funny to think how I know more Japanese and Spanish than we both know Hebrew.

I don’t mean he sounds like a native completely but he’s definitely getting there and on the right track. If he continues his studies there’s no doubt that he will sound exactly like a native. Sorry if I was unclear in my original comment but that’s what I meant to say. And if u does care about animal care probelm. Many luxury brand,they all do sth terrible to those animal. If u keep saying some shit about *Chinese eating dog, then u r just have stereotype with Chinese.

There are some good people in china.I agree many big companies testing animals for drugs. I criticize that even. I hope you have seen the videos of yulin,how they are killing the dogs brutally. Torturing to death. If you didn't, just check. Meat is eating oke as it's everyone's freedom and choice to eat. I am no body to tell them but atleast leave dogs. They are not eating material. Humans pet them to keep as protectors , army dogs or police dogs for security and as family pets.

    Xiè xie nǐ for the vid, I feel like this is the most authentic and positive one I've come across. I'm pretty certain I will be studying in China for 2 years next year, so it's really nice to see a video that both shows the scenery, food, culture, the people and what it's like studying there (although I will be studying Neuroscience full time and only Mandarin on the side-line).
    I'm really excited but also sort of nervous, so these videos really help and sort of give me courage :D

    Guangxi province (where Yangshuo is) is one of the most poorest provinces in China. You should be very proud of yourself to not choose to study in a fancy big city. There are many special treats and breathtaking natural reserves in Guilin.

      It's also much more affordable to study in a place like Guangxi compared to a mega city like Beijing or Shanghai.

    I studied here for a month in 2016 as part of a two-month trip to China; the school is fantastic, and it's in such a wonderful location to explore. After I graduate this summer I will be moving to China to teach English, and a huge factor was my experience on that trip. Thanks for the video and bringing back warm memories of climbing the TV tower and watching the sun set over the karst peaks, cycling out in the countryside (and in town- my friend managed to fling her flipflop in the middle of a roundabout!), and meeting so many amazing people.
    The one negative: the school's jingle to signal classes. It's such an earworm and I swear I will keep hearing it until I die!

    Should I study here in Yangshuo or in Beijing?
    I'll be there for the month of August, never been to either place (have been to Chengdu and Harbin for about 2 weeks), and my Chinese is beginner (not absolute). Beijing naturally comes in a few hundred euros more expensive, but I'm just worried there won't be enough to do for a month in Yangshuo, or it'll be too quiet with not enough young people (I'm early 20s)? I'd like some excitement and a little nightlife too!
    I'm aiming to go for half-adventure and half-learning, and if I went to Yangshuo then I'd want to stop in Beijing for a few days anyway for some touristy stuff and exploration. I did see some of the natural side of China on my previous trip, heading out into the mountains and Jiuzhaigou, and as for my priorities I guess I'm about split between nature and metropolis.
    Maybe this is an impossible question and a case of "Whichever you personally prefer", but I figured I'd ask anyways!

    • @somno6878
      @somno6878 5 років тому +2

      If your aim is the language and city life, I personally recommend you going to Beijing, because Beijing and Chengde (a city not far from Beijing) have the highest ratio of Putonghua speakers and Beijing is highly rich in culture which you can never get bored of. Guangxi province (where Yangshuo is) is one of the most poorest provinces in China, but there are many special treats and breathtaking natural reserves in Guilin, which can provide you with a peaceful learning environment compared with distracting and busy city life (there are still quite a lot of natural beauty in Beijing though). However, you have to bear in mind that many spoken languages in Guangxi are not even Chinese dialects, they belong to some other languages outside Sino-Tibetan languages like Zhuang language, which could be quite a demerit if you try to communicate with some locals.

    Your tonal accuracy still has some ways to go. For example, your tone for 'small' when ordering the bowl of noodles (also don't forget about tone sandhi). Moreover, it wasn't just tone (which is technically at the level of suprasegmentals); your segmental features miss some target sounds too. For that same word, 'small', you produced a sound with the initial segment being the post-alveolar fricative /ʃ/, when it should be /s/. This is a difference in place of articulation; your tongue position is further back than it's supposed to be -- thus creating a lower frequency, fuller 'hissing' sound than you would had your tongue been fronted to create a higher frequency, 'cleaner' sound. In fact, many English-as-first-language learners of Mandarin commit a similar mistake when pronouncing 'Beijing'. The 'j' is often prononuced like a voiced, post-alveolar fricative sound, when the tongue is supposed to be brought forward to produce a plosive (stop) sound (rather than a continuous, fricative sound). Similarly, this mistake is often committed with 'xie4 xie4', in that it is often pronounced erroneously with a post-alveolar fricative sound, BUT you didn't do it when thanking the barista girl for your cuppa Americano! You managed to produce a good, clean /s/ sound that many foreigners miss.
    And the above is just feedback on a single word ('xiao3') haha.
    But overall good effort on your progress.
    Keep it up and I'm sure you'll be proficient in speaking and hitting targets at the segmental and suprasegmental level.
    Don't neglect reading/writing, which is exponentially more challenging than speaking/listening (which is already difficult, especially tone production) :)

    • @Monkeyabroad
      @Monkeyabroad  5 років тому +4

      Although this analysis makes you sound really smart, it's just confusing for me, as I'm sure it is for anyone who will read it. Any way you can provide advice that's written in terms that any ordinary human (like me) could use to improve their Mandarin pronunciation?
