I'm fluent in Chinese and feel like I've learned about 50 percent of my Chinese from the Mandarin Corner podcast with Eileen here on UA-cam. I started out having to look up every other word and now can understand most of it without needing to look at the subtitles. I've listened to some of the episodes dozens of times while walking or cleaning, until I start memorize many sentences and expressions just from repetition. I strongly recommend it. It's also prepared me to watch a lot of other Chinese youtubers that don't cater to language learners.

Another great recommendation I recently got was to watch Peppa Pig in Chinese. It's actually extremely useful for leaning to talk about everyday things and actions which can be surprisingly difficult when you've already reached a high level in a foreign language.

For me, as a native Chinese speaker, I may sincerely recommend one podcast called 八分 (eight minutes) from 梁文道 (LEUNG Man-tao). It's actually NOT a Chinese learning podcast, but if you want to get to know more about the society in China and expand your Chinese vocabs into areas of current global events, history and literature review, this podcast is a must-listen. He indeed has a sense of humor and a knowledgeable mind! His mandarin is not standard, but the content is always inspiring, even for native Chinese speakers! If your Chinese has been advanced enough, check it out and you won't get disappointed.

I used to listen to “Learning Chinese through Stories” podcast. I haven’t listened to it for years but they still upload new episodes regularly. I like how they discuss a topic in a variety of ways so you could follow the conversation even if you didn’t know all the vocabulary. It’s also nice to listen to stories instead of listening to purely language learning content. The stories are told by a couple and they discuss the topic together. Therefore you can also learn expressions used in a conversation.

I started with 15 minutes a day reading 2-3 sentences before my brain was fried. After 3 months, I started one article per day which took 1 hour typically. I'm starting year 3 of self study and now read 10 pages of a novel per day. I always read the english paragraph first before the Chinese and go slow. I wish that I had done this years ago. Wishing you good luck with going back to Uni : ) !

I was wondering how you had achieved your level of Chinese.
In 2004 when I was 59, I visited Beijing and was amazed at the huge modern city that was so different from life in NZ and I was hooked. Back home I went to night class one night a week and quickly realized this was not going to work for me. A much younger friend and I put a notice up at the local university in Chinese (You help me and I help you) and thereafter I had a 'lesson' every day in exchange for polishing the English of my young and enthusiastic Chinese students.
I had hoped to be competent enough to hold everyday conversations within 4 years and so I decided to abandon writing as it slowed me down. I now regret that decision.
After 4 years of a lesson EVERY day from my team of over 50 students/helpers, I knew a lot about the language and a useful vocabulary, but I could not actually hold a conversation!
Then I was made redundant from my job so I took a job teaching English in Huai'an, Jiangsu where almost nobody spoke English and I was forced to just say it! It was amazing and my speaking rapidly improved, but listening was always difficult - way too fast! : ))
Like you I have striven to learn about the history and culture which provides so many points of common interest with the people you meet. Like you I married a Chinese (my age) who had a smattering of English and we now live in NZ where her English has improved dramatically while my Chinese has only improved a little. We get by well on an amalgam of both languages. I endorse everything you say about learning a 2nd language. My advice is to ensure you have Chinese native speakers, preferably young folk, around you to guide and inspire you as the journey is complex/tricky for an English speaker to master but it is definitely worth it!

I started learning Chinese from absolute zero in April last year, so now 11 months have passed. Now I am in the middle of HSK 4 and am thinking of taking the exam (HSK 4) in May. And I won`t stop at this level for sure, because I really want to get more or less fluent, read books and consume all the other media content in Chinese. There is quite a weird wish that has always been in my mind - to read Liu Cixins books. )))
But I see that not everyone would have such a rare opportunity as I do have for the last few months, study Chinese every day, 4 to 6 hours a day. Because Chinese does really require much time and everyday routine, otherwise you just forget what you have learnt very quickly, and like... fall out of Chinese mode.

Thank you so much for your videos!
I come from Switzerland and I started learning Chinese in 2016 at the University (but it was not my Major, I was doing a Political Science bachelor+master degrees).
I started to learn this beautiful language because the classes were free, no charges and I was really poor at this time... So, this is not a great argument to start a language, I can't romantize the begining of this journey, but(!) I fell in love with this language and the culture ! It was love at first sight, if I may say. So, I keep learning Chinese over the years, even when I finished my master degree. I went to China twice, both for 6 weeks. I wish I could stay in China longer and learn this incredible language better!

I think your chinese handwriting is beautiful.
I did a chinese language course in 2017,just basic conversations, not nearly HSK level 4,more level 1 and although I'm good with learning languages,I never really got a right feeling for the chinese language.
My handwriting is not terrible, but I never got the flow of writing chinese characters.
At that time I did watch chinese movies to understand the language more, but as a christian I did not feel comfortable with some of the topics in the movies.
As you can see,a lot of 'buts' from me,haha, and you are right,2023 will be a year with lots a changes and maybe not the changes you are expecting!
One thing for sure, the world is changing rapdly,Jesus is coming back, are you ready for that?

I started learning Chinese (Putonghua) when I was living in HK at the University of HK. But it only made sense after I moved to China to live. I was then able to consolidate my years of learning and put the language into practice. My reading and writing was OK while I was living there but with Chinese you loose it if you don't use it. I can still speak and type in pinyin and that's about it. But it all comes back after 24/48 hours of being back in China. And thank you for your videos. I really appreciate it. I get to re-experience a slice of China.

Loss of their Chinese root. Nowadays, there are many opportunities to study Mandarin via online video or attend Mandarin class.

Broaden ones mind and understand China history and culture. Helping the western educated people to understand China better, promote world peace, happiness, and prosperity.
I also hope overseas Chinese people who are English educated and have no knowledge of the Chinese language to make an effort to learn and understand Chinese culture.

I was 10 when my family immigrated to the US....did not speak a word of English, but learned quickly by watching TV and attending a school where the nuns spoke my native tongue. It helped that I had started to learn a second language (German) when I was 7 yrs old. (German and English share some common words) So transitioning to English was not as difficult for me as it was for my sisters, who were younger. So yes, watching movies is probably a good way to pick up another language.

Closing Patreon to replace it with memberships sounds a bit odd to me. You have essentially the same work, but youtube takes a larger cut than Patreon so you'll earn less. By switching you'll likely also loose supporters.
If you want to improve reading, I had good success by reading on the computer with a pop-up dictionary. If you don't know a character or word the pop-up dictionary provides an immediate translation so you are not really interrupted when reading. Alongside the reading, I used a text analyzer that provided a frequency sorted vocabulary list of the text that I put into a flascard program to aid the learning of the unknown vocabulary. Within a year of seriously starting to learn Chinese I finished my first book in Chinese. Admittedly the easiest book I could find (余华 , 许三观卖血记), but nevertheless a real native level book. Unfortunately neglected my Chinese since 2016, so forgot most of it again.

Mirian VI on the other channel that you are changing, I am worried about the children, at this age is not good to change a lot, I understand because I have an autistic son who is 36 years old, but I found through him that change affected a lot He in his development, I know that his children are healthy, but it is a tip from an elderly woman here in Brazil. South America. My English and Google Sorry.

Thank you for your care! ❤ I think people with autism will be affected by change in a different way. I hop the fact that Yonghong and I are always there will make it easier for them!

    您们可以来惠州惠东十里银滩,这里有国际学校🏫比较优惠、租楼住很便宜的、小孩上学也不贵、又是离香港深圳一个小时路程、近海边、很适合您们这种国际家庭。这里特别多外籍人士中外家庭在这里生活。米粒也可以去做老师哦、永鸿发展他兴趣开养生按摩店或者网店、都不错呢
    您们需要了解更多可以联络我哦

the fastest way to learn a language is to marry the native speaker

Maybe! But beware because not all partners are good patient teachers! : )) However they are excellent for practicing.

    • @MiriamFollin
      @MiriamFollin  Рік тому

I actually do not agree hahaha. When you enter a marriage, you have a love relationship, and Yonghong and I find it very difficult to change that into teacher/student relationship, even if only for 20 minutes. And he has quickly learned which words I understad and which ones I don't, so I don't learn much Chinese from him, the same goes for his family. For fluency it helps a lot though!
