Let's clear up some things. If you enjoyed this episode, I'm very happy for you, something I said in the video. I'm glad you got something out of it, which I didn't! Secondly just because I didn't like this episode doesn't mean I'm a bigot. It's very annoying because in this video, I give the episode its flowers and critique it. I'd do the same with an episode I like, too. Ncuti is incredible, and if ppl bothered to watch before sprouting nonsense, they'd see that I think he's incredible too!
I liked the episode quite a bit and god knows we need more DW fans especially on media platforms like youtube, twitter, bsky etc etc who just go: "yeah don't like this episode for A,B and C issues but cool if you like it" Honestly 15's strongest story in terms of character growth, this is that depth that I felt was missing from earlier stories in the era.
Yeah, this video pretty much is a summary of my thoughts on the episode, a part from the death of the Solarian didn't really hit hard for me at all, didn't really feel built up enough for an actual emotional response. I agree that Joy was really bland as a character and would love to see more of Anita in future episodes. (Also holy shit that episode at 6:58 is going to be a banger looks incredible visually)
I have no woke/anti-woke issues with DW.. my issue with the last season of DW was how nothing meant anything.. all the breadcrumbs along the way.. were just crumbs never meant to be part of something bigger. Ruby’s parents? Nobody important. Magical snow? Just a really strong memory.. 4th wall breaking kooky neighbor? Maybe she’s an alien maybe she’s a god but we aren’t ganna tell you ever so you decide…
@@doritofan1002 I don't really get this desire to have someone be important. I enjoy the concept that anyone can be special. I liked the idea swerve that Ruby's power came from the villain's belief that there was some crazy mystery to uncover. The breadcrumbs in the latest season were Susan Twist. It was pretty on the nose like the rest of Russell T Davies' seasons but it was clearly there. Your comments on the fourth wall breaking neighbour are fair enough, but I'm sure she'll be back and we'll find out what the deal is.
Episode was cool. Hotel concept was cool. The COVID hospital restrictions were cathartic after people seem to have forgotten the government breaking their own laws. I don't know what episode you watched, but this was good Who, like most of last season.
Anita eventually becomes Mrs. Flood by 2063. In 2025, Ruby Sunday meets Anita, which explains why Mrs. Flood understood the TARDIS after Ruby entered it-the TARDIS’s butterfly compensation switch wasn’t in use at the time. Obsessed with the Doctor, Anita uses the Time Hotel to stalk him, cosplay as his companions, and learn of his dark future. Her obsession grows bitter as she realizes the Doctor will never return to her. In 2063, Anita returns to the 2020s via the Time Hotel to align with Ruby meeting the Fifteenth Doctor. By then, she has become a narrator of the Doctor’s story, breaking the fourth wall as though addressing an unseen audience from the hotel. She knows about Sutekh’s return in 2024 because she experienced it as Anita before becoming Mrs. Flood. Presumably, Cara Sunday’s cheap rent is thanks to Anita Flood herself.
Better late than never. Far from the awful skit of the 13th doctor hiding in a wardrobe promoting lockdowns. 🫣 During 2020 onwards I always imagined the Doctor advising a middle of the road approach to the pandemic. 😊
@theginganaut9254 What? That little video was lovely. It gave hope to so many children during the pandemic, that is what the Doctor is about, giving hope to people in dark times!
The best Dr Who for this Xmas was the broadcast of the War Games. It was lovely to watch + a real Dr Who Xmas treat. Joy to the world however, well, if people liked it then all power to them + I’m glad Nu-Who makes some people happy. I’m just an old grumpy curmudgeon, it’s not for me.
Yeah this episode was an absolute mess. All characters were underdeveloped, the plot was rushed due to the montage taking up too much time, the ending of Joy becoming a star comes out of left field, the time hotel was underutilised, the villain was weak and underdeveloped, the themes are barely coveyed and there is way too many, the bootstrap paradox was more of a deus ex machina than anything, the doctor was crying again, pacing was all over the place. I think of those problems off the top of my head
@@sycaccino8533 I liked it, but I accept most of your points. Things I do disagree with are the bootstrap paradox being an issue; Capaldi had an entire episode built around the concept. I don't really have any issues with the crying either. Regardless, the Christmas episodes are always a little rushed and all over the place. The only real issue I had with underdeveloped character was Joy being possessed for half of the episode. At the end of the day, it wasn't the worst thing to ever exist, nor was it the best thing. It was a middle of the road Doctor Who Christmas episode. I preferred it to the Superhero one, the one with the fake Doctor, the River Song one and the first two Jodie specials.
@nathandts3401 The bootstrap didn't really fit imo. When it was introduced, I expected more time wimy stuff throughout but there wasn't. The doctor crying I don't mind either but it certainly noticeable in every episode. I'd put joy to the world above all Jodie specials, the witch in the wardrobe one (11th doctor) and maybe the superhero one. I like the next doctor and river song one far more, Jackson Lake (fake doctor) was far better developed and the episode had a really good resolution of the doctor properly getting thanked by the people of London
@sycaccino8533 I would've liked more stuff with the hotel too, but the year with Anita was good for me. Like a condensed Lodger without having to suffer through James Corden. Personally, I loved the third Jodie special with the self storage time loop. Groundhog Day as an episode was just fun. Ultimately, I'm just a little annoyed by the right wing grifters that insult the show for views. There are definitely worse episodes than this.
@nathandts3401 The lodger and closing time are rare moments of Corden being charismatic. I really like those episodes. Eve of the daleks is definitely one of Jodie's finest. There are some channels that do hate farm the new season. I don't mind the mansplaining joke in this episode as it seems in good faith. I only have a problem when it's like the male presenting timelord scene in Star Beast, which completely takes you out of the episode.
The problem with this episode was it was just there. It wasnt offensive or anything, it just didn't need to exist. I will admit the scenes with the Doctor and Anita were great despite being very sad.
I enjoyed the episode and will enjoy rewatching it from years to come but i agree i wish joy eould have been developed way more which didn't happen because of time. During the 15 bring with anita i kinda was afraid that joy wouldn't be in the episode at all
It looked pretty, the concept is nice. But that's only nice things i can say about it. I really didn't care for anyone in the special. Not even the doctor.
Personally i thought this was the worst 15th episode. I agree Anita was the only thing to this episode. Also i think she should be consider an offical companion even without being in the tardis
There's no "evil" lmao I just don't like this episode. Ncuti has been great and so have almost all his episodes, with his finale being my favourite 2 parter in years. Just this one wasn't to my liking, I gave my reasons why but also give this episode its flowers for certain elements. I'd do the same with any episode I review.
@SaammuelWho evil wasn't directed at you specifically. It's the general, hyperbolic nature of reviewing content on UA-cam (in certain reviewers need to angle their reviews to a certain audience) Maybe 'disaster' is a bit silly but shrug emoji
Very weird reaction to someone not liking an episode of a tv show. So every time anyone is critical of any Doctor Who episode that means they’re “scrambling to find problems” or they think it’s “evil”?
They were so busy obeying Disney and ticking Boxes, they forgot the number one rule of Doctor Who, pick someone who has that "Doctor" vibe about them! Christopher Eccelston didn't have to it, Jodie Whittaker didn't have it, Ncuti Gatwa doesn't have it! "Sexist" you cry, Nope! Hayley Attwell, Gemma Chan, Nina Sosanya all would have been a better Doctor than what we got! Even Jo Martin was more Doctor than Jodie! "Racist!" you cry! Nope Patterson Joseph, David Harewood, David Yip would have been better choices! (I've wanted Patterson to get it since 1996!) Ncuti got the job for one reason only! And THAT is why the pace of the episode had to Stop, just so RTD could see the Doctor and Rogue kiss on screen! 🤔
I personally loved it! Yeah the ending was a little cliche and sappy but IDC. The Doctor spending a year at the hotel was a nice moment and him and Joy were good duo!
