Rimbaud was born into a family of a never-present father and a very strict mother. His mom forced him to know Latin verses by heart and would make him prioritize his education. Rimbaud was an exceptional student, and by the age of 16, he had already won 15 academic prizes.
When the Franco-Prussian war broke out, Rimbaud decided to go to Paris, but was arrested for not having a ticket. Then, he started hanging out with other poets in France. There, Rimbaud met Paul Verlaine, a married man who was 10 years his senior.
Rimbaud and Verlaine started having an affair and went off to London to live together. Their life as a couple lasted for about a year, and was consisting of drugs, alcohol, violence and writing. One night, Verlaine who was violent when drunk, took out his gun and shot Rimbaud, which ended Rimbaud’s interest in both Verlaine and writing.
After that, Rimbaud moved on, enlisted in the Dutch army and deserted it while in Java, Indonesia. Soon he started visiting many different countries and finally settling in Ethiopia.
Arthur Rimbaud died aged 37, due to bone cancer.

Hey there good friend. I was just commentating on how good of a job you were doing when I remembered a very interesting man you could report on. This mysterious stranger I speak of can only be described as the richest man to ever live, and his name is Mansa Musa. I highly suggest that you do a video on him.

Boredom is no longer my love. The rages, the debaucheries, the madness I have known in all their dash and disaster -the burden is cast aside. Let us appreciate the height of my innocence without vertigo.- Arthur Rimbaud from his A Season in Hell (1873)

If his father had been there to emotionally support his children and the mother allowed her concrete wall personality to crack a bit then Rimbaud would have been a very normal person. I'm sorry but Rimbaud was very a fucked up person by the time he started writing at the age of 16. Verlaine was an equally messed up person who didn't help matters for Rimbaud. I have more sympathy for Rimbaud than I do for Verlaine as the latter had had a comfortable upbringing that you think would've made him appreciative that he wasn't neglected. When you dabble into hedonism and debauchery then you might be a person trying to make sense as to what to when you were young. To those who aspire to be like Verlaine, you're not going to reach an old age.

Why would anyone aspire to be an alcoholic, abusive husband, deadbeat father who well past the age of 30 was still relying on his mom sending him money to live? Verlaine was a loser and straight up bad person lol I don't get the fascination with him

@@Neuroneos At least I do have loving parents and a great brother. The thing that I find so sad about Rimbaud is that he had two parents who weren't there for him and his siblings in their formative childhood years. His poems are of high quality but the trauma he carried into his adult years led to the self-destructive behavior that occurred in Paris. I recommend you contrast Rimbaud's life with Robert Louis Stevenson and WB Yeats (born around that same time in the 19th century) and see the difference.
