      please, as much as a song reminds you of another artist, resist the temptation. this song is 35 years old, so the people listening will mostly be hardcore fans who count this song to their youth memories. No, we dont want to hear Selena, we want to hear Bangles. Shove Selena.

    The Bangles are mostly known for Walk Like An Egyptian, itself no mere novelty song. But the Bangles were so much more than that as this song shows. Lead singing, harmonies, instruments, song structure and development. all really fine. Good video, good reaction, good analysis. 😊

    Susanna Hoffs. The eyes and voice that captivated a whole generation of young men. There wasn't a guy in my high school that didn't want to be her eternal flame. This was prime high school slow dance. Great song, great singer!

    You said 2/2, but this was actually already the 3rd Bangles song you reacted to, you did 'Walk like an Egyptian' a few months ago. Eternal Flame is such a classic and later hit the charts a 2nd time when it was covered by Atomic Kitten. But my favourite Bangles song is their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Hazy Shade of Winter', it doesn't have the same impressive lead vocal, but the harmonies are out of this world, in a musical context that is kinda ... "unexpected". 🙂

    Being a teenage boy in the 80s when they were all the rage, I was a fan. Not only for their musical abilities, if you know what I mean... (Crushing big time on all of them!)
    After what I've heard from those who did, they were a fun bunch to hang out with. Only if you went out drinking with them, you should be on a waiting list for a new liver.

    Written by Susanna Hoffs, Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. Susanna Hoffs graduated 🎓 from University of California, across from my hometown San Francisco 🌉. After that, she, Anne Zelenkas and the Petersen sisters founded The Bangles in Los Angeles.
    40 years 🎂 , Hoffs returned to the Bay Area. She and the rest of the Bangles less Annie Selena, replaced by Michael Steele (born Susan Thomas) to film 🎥 the video to Hero Takes the Fall.
    When I listen to this song, I think of True Colors, written by Kelly and Steinberg, and I'll Stand by You, written by them and Chrissie Hynde. Kelly and Steinberg wrote other hit songs. Each one wrote songs with other writers.
    This song shares the same key 🔑 as 1 Dreaming of You, which was written by Tom Snow ❄ and Franne Golde and 2 Di Mapaliwanag, written by Francis Salazar and Arnie Mendaros.
    Suggested videos 📹: 1 The Pretenders perform I'll Stand by You 2 The Divinyls perform I Touch Myself 3 Morissette Amon sings Di Mapaliwanag. Wishbus version 🚌

    I've got all of their albums on my shelf. Funny: in the 1st part of the song, the chorus is supporting her. In the 2nd part, the chorus is predominant. And she only steps in, occasionally. I don't think I know another song like that. Tank the tck just had a tier list of most recognizable voices. I think it was missing out on her. Just like Cindy Lauper. It was a fun video.
    And one fun question about making this ranking was: "would you recognize this singer, if she/he was singing twinkle, twinkle, little star? Great criteria, I think!
    Another great voice to look at would be Cass Elliot. Maybe that song with the Lovin Spoonful: Didn't wanna have to do it? Unforgotten. And dearly missed!

  • @hackapump
    @hackapump 2 місяці тому

    Yeah, she belts the high note before they go into the repeating chorus outro. But it's the money note, and I suspect she only had it in her a few times, maybe even just the once, and that she had to fall back on her head voice for the second round. Which on the one hand is a bit of a letdown, but on the other hand it makes that single time hit so much harder. It becomes the emotional peak of the song, and nothing else tries to steal its thunder, so to speak. To be clear: She doesn't belt that note live, at least not in recent decades, so it probably was at the very top end of her range, hence my theory.

    "Eternal Flame" was something of a problem for the Bangles. The power ballad was so VERY much not what they were known for (the Prince-penned "Manic Monday" or Kimberley Rew's "Going Down to Liverpool" are lots more characteristic), and the track mistakenly focused attention on singer Susanna Hoffs as the group's "leader" (not at ALL how the band dynamic worked). OTOH, it's a gorgeous power ballad, and on its own merits is a fantastic track.
