This is the way my Mama taught me to make biscuits and I just love it, aand she put bacon grease on top of her biscuits as well. She has been in Heave4n for a long time now and this brings back wonderful memories. Thank you so much. Wee caalled them "cat head biscuits" and they tasted wonderful!
Awwww. I know how you must miss your momma. I miss mine, too. I’m so glad my video brought some good memories to you today. We called these “cat heads” too…lol. Thanks for watching and leaving a lovely comment. Have a blessed day.
I'm watching this because my mom passed away and everything she made was old fashion way from fried chicken, DUMPLINS, chili , pot of beans, and her breakfast,,that's why I'm looking this up she made the best biscuits, I learned her chicken and dumplings real good , now I'm cravin them biscuits, I'm excited to try to getem made they look exactly like them ...thanks for sharing this ..💚
Old fashioned cooking is becoming a lost art. My mom began teaching me to cook when I was really young. She wanted me to be able to feed a family when I got older, married and had kids...lol. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Now, that's the way to make biscuits! BUT, I never saw anyone put bacon grease on top before cooking. We'll be seeing it in this house this weekend though, I can tell you that! Those biscuits look fit to eat!
Thank you, and thanks for stopping by! I hope you enjoy the biscuits. The bacon grease gives them that little extra “something” and also helps to form a nice crust on top without being too dry.
When family visited my husband's step-mother, she always made biscuits using this method (without the bacon grease). She recently passed, and my daughter and I made biscuits in her honor. Glad to find this video to psss on to my kids
Awww, I’m so sorry for your loss. I enjoy passing the old methods and traditions along. Just glad there are people who still find value in them. Thank you for visiting.
This looks exactly like my granny's cathead biscuits! She was born in 1906 and I sat on her bakers cabinet watching her when I was a tiny tot and often got to help with the leftover doecake. Thank you for sharing
My grandma there and grandfather both lived to be in their 90s and they ate fried chicken homemade mac and cheese all kinds of vegetables from the garden and biscuits almost every meal I can't wait to try this
thank you for this video!! I love you saying, "this is a messy process." makes me feel good! preheat 400 1. make well 2. add buttermilk and shortening 3. pinch until center is real sticky 4. scoop up ball with hands and turn over 5. shape into biscuit shape and place in greased skillet 6. top biscuits with melted butter bake 15-20 minutes
Thanks for watching and commenting. My sweet momma has gone on, too. I wanted to make this video for my kids and anyone who might be interested in keeping the old ways alive.
Awww...thank you so much! There's just nothing like the old fashioned foods we grew up on. Thanks for watching and taking time to leave such a nice comment!
My mom rest her soul , she always put the fork crisscross on her peanut butter cookies, that's what I remembered when I saw you say that about the biscuits...
I recently asked my grandmother to teach me how to make biscuits and this is exactly how she showed me to do it! Thank you for your video because it helps me remember the right consistency of the dough at each step.
This is the way my maternal grandmother made them. We'd have chocolate and biscuits every time we'd visit. I have inherited her #8 Griswold cast iron skillet. She'd grease the skillet with bacon grease as well as brush them.
Good memories! Were you referring to chocolate gravy and biscuits? We looove chocolate gravy with them. I actually have a video on making chocolate gravy, if you're interested in looking it up. And what a treasure you have in your iron skillet! Thank for watching and commenting!
Those are some of the prettiest biscuits I have ever seen. I make mine the exact same way, however I have not been putting my bacon grease on top before cooking. I will do this with the bacon grease from now on, that method makes them golden brown. Thanks for the help 👍
Your biscuits look exactly like my mamma's biscuits, and I've craved her biscuits every since she passed 26 yrs.ago. You've inspired me to try and duplicate hers using your recipe... Thank you kindly
Glad my video inspired you to try the biscuits. You can do it! If they don’t turn out nice the first time, keep trying. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.
Mom did hers in a wooden bowl like that I turn mine in a ceramic bowl and roll my dough (always whole buttermilk) out on floured wax paper. Then I cut out biscuits with a floured tin can & bake on cookie sheet at 500 degrees. BUT I just seasoned my large Lodge skillet and want to try some in the cast iron. Thanks.
I LOVE the old wooden bowls! I have a really nice one that I bought at a yard sale several years ago for just $10, which was a great price. The lady even told me the story of how she got it….❤️Your biscuits sound delicious! I’m sure you’ll like baking them in the iron skillet. As for the tin can, it’s nice to hear of someone else using what others would toss in the garbage. We used to chop cabbage to make kraut with two cream cans, when the ends were attached with wax. They were great for that. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Ingot my first hot butchered this week, and now we are looking for recipes to use the lard with. This video even after watching 4 others was the first one to make my mouth water! I love it! And will be sharing it!! Thank you!
Christian Guther thanks for watching, commenting and sharing! I remember the days when my daddy butchered hogs and mamma would render lard. Neighbors and friends came by to help, and of course, there were kids to play with all day long. Cherished memories...
Is it normal for it to smell like pork reigns? Does the leaf lard smell Ike that? I had taken some back fat off the loins and it’s got a strong pork reign taste
Christian Guther It shouldn’t have a strong taste. After the fat has been cut from the skin, then rendering and straining it, it should have a very mild taste.
Yum! I love biscuits and gravy too. We also like breakfast for dinner. Thank you for this because I can make good biscuits, but everyone now uses cold butter, and that don't agree with my stomach. And I didn't know how much shortening to use. I know THEY say it's not healthy, but our grannies used hog lard and ate eggs and things THEY say is not healthy for years. And most lived alot longer than they do today. And I will be getting me some lard from my Amish friends!
I agree with you! My momma used rendered lard from hogs we killed. People don’t know much about the old ways anymore, and it’s really sad. Thanks so much for watching my video and leaving a nice comment. Merry Christmas!
That’s how mom made it! ❤️ She would spin the bowl as she mixed it, it was so cool to watch her… used the same big bowl for 40 yrs, just add a little flower back in there… cool video!
If you watch the video, it will tell you. I mostly cook from scratch , so the measurements are approximate. Thanks so much for visiting and leaving a nice comment!
You remind me of my first mothe in law. She made biscuits like you do. They were really wonderful. You make me want to try your way of doing it, I never seemed to get it right but I think I will try again. Your biscuits look so good. Thank you.
The best demonstration of hand rolled biscuits I've seen. Chef Sara Gaede did it exactly this way in ' The Pirate's House Cookbook'. Thanks for a great video.
exactly like my mawmaw made em. i’m from central ms. i watched her as a little boy. she made daily. and tomato gravy. fried chicken mashed taters pink eye purple hull peas.
Thanks for stopping by! You can definitely use lard in these biscuits. That’s actually how my mom used to make them before she started using shortening.
I was looking for a good ole cat head biscuit recipe and the picture of your biscuits stopped me here. Your title doesn't say cat head but they looked so perfect....couldn't resist watching. Do you have a gravy recipe to go with them...maybe a sausage gravy? Thank You and Jesus bless.
I saw an old cowboy mixing them in the flour sack right out there on the Prairie and put them in a dutch oven wish I would have paid more attention to his technique. All I know is they were good or I was hungry one
Thank you! The only time they would have used oil is if they didn’t have lard or shortening. The really old time way of making biscuits was using lard, and of course, back in the old days, there was no self-rising flour, so salt and baking powder would have been added. I mostly use shortening now (I guess it’s not as bad for our health), but do occasionally use lard that I have saved from frying bacon. If you do use some type of oil, the biscuits will definitely taste differently.
I grew up watching my Grandma, my mother and my aunts making biscuits this way, I have seen my mom have a little bit of bacon grease in the skillet and when she got the biscuit made, she would dip the biscuit and then turn it over so the tops would have the grease on top instead of spooning it over the top, just her way and they looked as perfect as these.
Lol, as 45. Bacon grease might not be so healthy, but it sure makes a big difference in the taste of the foods it’s used in. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you so much! I've searched all over for a video showing how to make a biscuit like this. My mom use to make the most delicious, soft but golden brown biscuits Ive ever had in my life. Would you believe she used powdered milk?!! She mixed them just like you, and she would just pinch her off a bit. I would watch and it always squeezed out through her thumb and finger, then she would pat it a little and plop it in the pan. She always cooked long cookie sheet full. They were so good. I havent been able to find anyone that made biscuits as tender and fluffy as my mom did. It may be that she used the powdered milk...not sure? Anyway...thanks for taking me down memory lane 😊❤❤❤ By the way, yours look a lot like my moms did so i know theyre delicious!!
Well, thank you so much for such nice comments! The powdered milk could definitely have been the ingredient that made your mom’s biscuits so good. But, I just bet it was that special mother’s touch that made them so delicious. Thanks for stopping by and spending some time with me!
Glad the video brought some good memories to you! I did a video some time ago on my channel called ”Old Fashioned Chocolate Gravy,” which is what we called it here in my neck of the woods in West Virginia. Thanks for watching and commenting. Have a great evening.
You just have the perfect touch of making biscuits. I’m going to try it but I’ve haven’t gotten them that light and fluffy yet. I’m a new subscriber and look forward to more of your recipes !!
Thank you! I'm so glad you found your way over to my channel...welcome! I hope the recipe turns out great for you. Thank you for subscribing and commenting.
Now that's some mighty fine looking biscuits. Smother fry some potatoes, pour a bunch of cane syrup with a bunch of heavy cream mixed up with syrup. Drag biscuits through syrup and every now and then drag a fork full of potatoes through syrup and cream. That be so good. Don't forget to fry up a bunch of bacon. Pork chops work good too.
Rhonda, I'm sure your mamma's bread was delicious! Nobody can cook like Mamma! Mine used to put biscuits in a pan like you're talking about, too (six in my family, including my parents). I sure do miss eating meals with her and Daddy, and the rest of the family. We used to gather there every Sunday after church to have dinner. Good times, good memories.
I went and signed in to your fb page. My mommy used to make biscuits. I have made biscuits before nothing pretty like yours. We had a family of eight, six children. I can’t wait for your next video Bonnie. I am sorry about your kitty scratching you. You just made my mouth water, lol.
Hello. I just saw the buttermilk biscuit video on UA-cam. It was very helpful. That’s the way my granny made biscuits. It’s so nice to have a video tutorial to watch. I went to Facebook but could not find the “simplebackroadlife” page. I did find a “Ms Bonnie’s Country Lane” page, but so far I haven’t seen any recipes posted there. Am I looking for the printed recipes in the wrong place?
Thanks for watching and commenting on my video! I changed my UA-cam and Facebook names some time ago, and I'm sorry for the confusion. You found the right page on Facebook, "Ms. Bonnie's Country Lane." I need to get some recipes listed there in a folder so that folks can get them there, as well.
Ingredients: • Large bowl of flour ☆(you won't use all of the flour; you just need a decent amount of flour in a large bowl) • 1 cup of buttermilk • ½ cup of shortening • Melted bacon fat
Right on the flour, and yes, 1 cup of buttermilk is 1/2 pint. I use 1/2 cup shortening and then put the bacon grease on the top of the biscuits before they go into the oven. You can use bacon grease in biscuits, too, or can use lard (my mom used lard when I was a little girl). After making the biscuits, sift the flour to use again.
Thank you God for letting me be Southern born and corn bread fed
Same! Thanks for stopping by!

Ms Bonnie’s gentle voice and soft hands make beautiful biscuits. I learned how gently I should be to make beautifully light biscuits.

Well thank you! The bacon grease does help with browning, and it also gives the biscuits a little added flavor. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Bacon grease, so-called, is the primary ingredient to anything I want to make right. Biscuits, gravy, steak, soup - you name it. Pig fat is the key.
gotta try it this way,. the og traditional way. thank you.

Thank you! After the biscuits are made, sift the flour to use again. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hopefully, they turn out great! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you!💕
Now that's some mighty fine looking biscuits.
Sounds like you know how to eat! Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hmmmm. That's how my mama dot it, but she use a long rectangle pan kind of like a cookie sheet. She had to feed 11. Daddy and the children. ❤ Rhonda

Thanks so much, Naomi. Glad you enjoyed the video! I hope you find something you enjoy over on my Facebook page...:)
Hello. I just saw the buttermilk biscuit video on UA-cam. It was very helpful. That’s the way my granny made biscuits. It’s so nice to have a video tutorial to watch. I
went to Facebook but could not find the “simplebackroadlife” page.
My mom made hers the exact same way.
I’m sure they were delicious. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I would love to see a written down recipe.
When I get my blog up ( next couple days), I’ll leave a link here in the comments section to the recipe. Thanks for stopping by!
That’s how my Mom made her biscuits!

Just found your channel. I subscribed. What state or part of the country are you in?
What temp did u cook them?
Thank you so much for subscribing! I live in southern West Virginia.
I bake the biscuits at 400 degrees.
Ingredients:
• Large bowl of flour
☆(you won't use all of the flour; you just need a decent amount of flour in a large bowl)
• 1 cup of buttermilk
• ½ cup of shortening
• Melted bacon fat
Right on the flour, and yes, 1 cup of buttermilk is 1/2 pint. I use 1/2 cup shortening and then put the bacon grease on the top of the biscuits before they go into the oven. You can use bacon grease in biscuits, too, or can use lard (my mom used lard when I was a little girl). After making the biscuits, sift the flour to use again.
Is it self rising flour?
You had me at bacon grease and cast iron. 😃
Can’t go wrong with that combo! Lol. Thanks for visiting.
Must try this. They look absolutely yummy. What do you do with the leftover flour in the mixing bowl.....seems a waste just to toss it out.
I always sift the leftover flour to use again. Thanks for watching and commenting!
