    Sliding doors have come a long way since the days of Grandma's flimsy contraption that took all the strength you could muster to drag back and forth. From powder coatings to thermal breaks to precision machined bearings, a lot has changed in the last few years and, today, Jeff will walk us through some of them. I was going to go with the Pella from my local Lowes, but I do want a good quality door without breaking the bank. They only carry the 150 series in the store and not the width I want it was also pretty hard to slide. Which brand would you suggest for a 8ft wide budget friendly, small frame, decent quality door? • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  4 місяці тому

      The track height will be dictated by the flooring height and how much overhang you have on your patio.
      If you do not have much of an overhang, you will want a higher threshold to prevent water from coming inside.

    Great video. You are the tops! I'm looking to substitute my old sliding door (one fixed and one sliding panel) but I need one with a low effort to open or close. Do you happen to know the maximum effort allowed by codes or average in the industry? I have an older person living with us and she can't do a lot of effort to open one. My neighbor has one that needs considerable effort and even I have a problem. He has no idea of what effort has to be exerted. This would be very useful to add to your videos and would surprise others that have older relatives or disabled family members. Any particular brand for budget limited persons?

      Thank you so much for watching! Aluminum sliding doors can be painted but I would strongly recommend against it. Once you start painting aluminum you have to keep painting it every year or two. It's hard to get paint to stick to a metal surface. I would look for a product that is in the color you like or I would find a paintable product, like fiberglass.

    I want to do a wide sliding door for a window wall facing the lake, but my contractor strongly recommends against it because he said the sand will get into the track will ultimately ruin it, and because of the high winds off the lake in the winter (that is not ideal for a sliding door). Can you recommend a patio door with a low threshold or flush. We had a NT patio door put in and the threshold is a tripping hazard waiting to happen. Our old patio door the threshold was flush and we needed that because our as you pass thru the patio door there is a small step down to our garden room.
    We need to find a solution either it being us buying a new patio door, this door is only 2 months old or some time of ADA solution that allows us to step on the threshold without the guide for the door sticking up and making stepping on the threshold uncomfortable. Our sales man says he doesn't know of any doors that have low or flush threshold, quite disappointed with him right now.
    Any help you can suggest will be appreciated.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 роки тому

      NT doesn't actually make their own sliding door. It's made by another manufacturer for them.
      I've never seen the door something can't say whether or not it's higher than a typical door.
      Can you go to a few showrooms and compare it to what they have?
      You might also consider a transition board that would slope upwards to the threshold to reduce the chance if tripping.
      I'm guessing you probably have a tile floor. Tile is much thinner than wood. It could be that their door was designed primarily for wood flooring.
      All the best, Jeff

    Great video as always! I’m shopping to install a roughly 11’x7’ four panel slider in our dining room. Im weighing between Milgard Ultra and Trinsic lines. • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 роки тому +3

      The fiberglass product would be the best between those two. However, I usually do not make a door four panels wide until it gets past 15 ft in width. A four panel door in that size would have very narrow pass-throughs when you open one door. I think you'd be better off with a three panel door anytime you're not over 12 to 15 ft.

    How about the glass? How easy is it to break for the burglars?

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 роки тому +2

      It's not that hard to break. For security, order a door with laminated glass.

    so how do i know a left or right hand sliding door ? is it from the out side or inside

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 роки тому

      Door handing is always determined from the outside looking in. A door where the left panel slides would be called an X/O. If the panel slides from right to left, it would be an O/X. The "X" panel is always the operable panel.

    What are your thoughts on fiberglass (Ultrex) and composite (Fibrex) sliding doors?

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  3 роки тому +1

      Ultrex by Marvin and Impervia by Pella are great products and made from real fiberglass. Fibrex is not a fiberglass product. It is good but cannot be categorized in the same zip code as true fiberglass.

      The Marvin door is going to be much better. The Anderson door is very nice though.

      A simple two panel door but they don't like to sell it much. Western also makes comparable products to Fleetwood have a better price point.

There is a price which is modified by a few dollars +, I dont care I just want the basic price. I have never met any of these folks that would just quote a price. They have to talk you into spending huge $ on whatever they are selling. UGH
