Just so have it, I bought and 09 Prius with just over 246,000 miles two weeks ago for a couple thousand bucks. Immediately got an oil change. Took it to get a new cat installed. I then took it to get new pads and rotors and a manifold gasket. I then went to the junkyard and got a right rear light, an antenna, a spare tire, and the trunk pull-out cover shade for $56. I then went back to the junkyard and got a replacement spoiler for $20. My Prius is silver, but the spoiler is black. It actually looks really good. I think the car drives really well, and the hybrid battery appears to still be in good condition. I can make the battery icon go green quite often. I also programmed an extra fob today on my own. I knew I would have to put a couple thousand dollars into it to get it the way I wanted it, but so far it seems worth it.
You did VERY well. I am paying substantially more than that at auction, sight unseen. Then I have to ship them up from the south, give them all the love they need, and try to make an honest profit! Always love to hear about a deal. I have a cheapie once in a while. Did a sweetheart over the summer for like $3,300. Might have a $2995 soon but its very dinged up. Nice work. Cherish it.@@hecg83
@@DrewGarage Thank you Drew. The paint on the roof is faded. The reason she sold it to me at that price was because the check engine light was one cat p04020 I believe. We did a fuel injection cleaning change spark plugs and intake cleaning and the code cleared. So far so good. Original battery still great I averaged 52 mpg I’m keeping this little tank till the wheels fall out. It does burn bit of oil. About half wet every oil change not bad tho. Thanks for the videos and love your content
Another issue that can leave you stranded as it happened to me, is the inverter cooling pump. I would replace that as preventative maintenance. These are awesome cars though.
I have 2005 I bought new. Has 210k miles on it. It really is an amazing car. I keep wanting to sell it, but I never can make myself do it. Drives and looks ‘almost’ as good as the day I got it (I detail clean it regularly). Got a new battery under warranty 10 years ago and it’s going strong. I was getting 36mpg and then changed the fuel injectors and cleaned the mass air flow sensor and now I’m getting about 42mpg with regular gas and 45 with super. Amazing car if you take care of it.
You definitely know you're stuff! I've owned my 06 Prius for 10+ years and it has been the GOAT of cars for sure. Even more reliable than my 99 Land Cruiser that I owned for 14 years. Just amazing, I recommend a Gen2 prius for anyone looking for cheap, reliable, transportation.
I appreciate that :-) I love these cars. I am starting to feel, though I don’t want to admit it, that they are getting more and more difficult every month to find in good shape. But the fall of 2027 I will be beginning to purchase them in Japan and ship them over (they have to be 25 years old to come here - I almost bought a 1999 Prius last night but I worry about The battery cells not being available here) It’s funny you mentioned land cruiser… I almost bought a j100 Diesel for my wife in Japan. She was very into the whole Diesel thing, but they just don’t cruise at 80 on the expressway like a gas unit
Love my Gen 2 Prius. Never ceases to amaze me. I mean, I just found out yesterday about the secret drawer in the front. It's a car that keeps on giving.
My family has 3 of these, all over 200k. Best change i made for stability and cost effective tires was installing wheels and 205/55/16 tires off matrix and pointiac vibes. Probably hurts milage a little but handles so much better and tires are very common. I drive around 1000 miles per week. Love all the info you have shared.
In love with my Generation 2, 2008 Prius, with 170,000 miles. It was only 25K, new in 10/2007. Most think it’s new since it’s garage kept with my custom front and rear running lights. Perhaps garage kept helps the original battery last longer due to less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections? The HID headlights failed but replaced them myself without taking the bumper off by feeling my way with my hand. They are much brighter than the originals. Went 90K with the energy saver Defender Michelin tires and replaced them with the regular Defender Michelin tires. Loss a few miles per gallon but handles better and a softer ride maybe due to new thread. The Prius is used for long trips only with an average mileage of 53 MPG. Short trips are by bike, feet and public transit all year. It’s a beautiful sports car Barcelona RED. Good sleeping camping car with a 6’ bed with great cargo capacity. Adding a portable inverter makes a 115 Volt generator for back up efficient home power with the on and off cycle of the engine. The Princess Prius is a tough survivor like the princess cat in the movie “The Incredible Journey”. The beautiful large dash display is ahead of its time with sharp graphics like a space ship. Ran out of gas, and a whole dashboard lit up including the triangle of death (indicates serious malfunction - do something now!). Fortunately filled up 1/2 mile away before the battery became too low. Never again!! It’s an adventure reliable stealth vehicle that slips through the air quietly! The best smooth styling of all the model years. Definitely a incognito James Bond vehicle with secrete abilities never to be underestimated. So watch out!!! In time, it will become a classic antique with appreciating value.
Im glad to see some support for 20 year old prius! They are such a jewel even with high mileage! Im retired hybrid tech own several myself and have been enjoying hybrids prius for over 24 years!
Great video. I have an 06 @ 260k miles. Original owner. Your video summarizes most of the repairs and fixers done to my car. I'm in west coast and don't have rust issues. The clear coat is fading though. I'm holding on to it as a reliable beater car. My next project is to replace the HID bulb or maybe replace it with Halogen.
When you add a GromAudio VLine2 unit to 2nd gen Prius (w/ Nav), this adds CarPlay and more to my Prius extending the functionality. I was able to use Roku stick with this unit meaning that I can watch Netflix or Prime Video on my screen. I can also add UA-cam video as App to the Grom and watch video. It took 2 hours to install without any splicing. It has custom harness. I was able to pair a wireless keyboard with the VLine so that I can type in searches on the UA-cam app faster than the online keyboard. VLine2 unit only works on 2nd gen Prius that has a NAV unit. That is because the custom harness was made for that Prius trim. The VLine unit allows for a mouse via USB port. I use HDMI input port and the 2nd USB port for my Roku stick. It has HDMI output port for backseat headrest monitors. The VLiine unit can cast to smart monitors if you can have smart TV/monitor. It allows for a front or rear camera using a Grom accessory harness. I don’t know if it would work for a side camera. This was the best update for 2nd gen Prius using the existing Prius hardware.
My 2008 is at 290k miles and runs like a champ. After 15 years I replaced the hybrid battery with a Toyota OEM at a great price from my local dealer. I replaced it myself. My son replaced the original fuel injectors. It recently passed smog. I agree it's the best car ever made!
@@hecg83 the hybrid battery was around $2000 including taxes at Longo Toyota. Keep in mind the ECU is not included so you need to transfer it from the old battery.
@@crooner2007 wow!!!!! That’s an amazing price!!!!!!! So they sold you just the battery correct. You did the labor. I need to find a dealer like that one!
I just went to the dealership and scheduled a hybrid battery install on my 09. Battery was 1950 + tax, and the service will be $550. It's well worth it to me. Mine has 248k miles.
Hi Drew, I am from Sweden, as I moved here recently from the Middle East, I was in search of a car that was reliable and little easy on the pocket in terms of fuel consumption. After searching for over 2 months, I got my hands on 2006 Prius driven (I kid you not) 442,000 kilometers. I got it cheap and it had only 4 previous owners. The last guy had it over 13 years and considering the age of the car it looked in a pretty good condition. I have owned Hyundai Coupe, Honda Coupe, Honda Accord, Honda CR-V and my last car in the Middle East was Honda Pilot (a 3.5 litre fuel consuming beast) and I couldnt be happier with my purchase of this Prius. The fuel consumption (which was my main reason to buy it) is just extraordinary. I am very confident about the car as I went for annual inspection and the only comment they made was to change the front wheel bearing which I will do. But people, if you do find a car which is clean and has been taken care nicely, get an inspection and get it. Trust me you will love it. This is my first ever Toyota and I really fell in love with it. I agree with what Drew has said in this video, if I had a Mercedes and a Toyota I would just take my Toyota to work as I would trust its reliability. Alhamdulllah, I am very happy with my purchase.
I am fortunate enough to be near a wrecking yard that have Prius parts that I can source. I got WeatherTech Prius floor mats for $20. I can get a head unit for $165 (both stereo with SAT and display monitor) for earlier 2006-2008 Prius with NAV, but 2009 model has different display monitor for Prius with NAV for some odd reason.
My 2006 I have had 4yrs now. It has over 390k miles now. Only had 212k when I bought mine. Only replaced the hybrid battery, back brakes, 12v battery, 3rd set of tires, just did the inverter pump, new cat from the person who stole it, the stupid hatch piece, and just fixed my speedometer. I do need to do the clock spring this week. Great car. I plan on driving it until falls apart. I commute over 100mi/day and still average about 42mpg. I do have to fix the clear coat on it.. but overall great car.
For true fact i own 3 of these..2 of 2004 and one 2007 and 4th one is 2010 these are some serious built vehicles to last with owners life span..as a diagnostic tech i totally agree with your every single word you layed out for these vehicles..cheers
Proud owner of a beautiful 2008 Prius with 220k miles on the clock! Bought the car from a nice lady in the Bay area who only used it to commute to and from work everyday, had 130k when I got it. The car has simply never let me down (outside of a bad coolant pump and a couple bad 12v batteries) changed out the whole suspension to keep it going, about to finally change the ORIGONAL brake pads this week and even upgraded the whole audio system and added an aftermarket head unit. Rock solid car and love the fuck out of the gen 2. If I wrecked mine today I'd buy another one tomorrow in a heartbeat. Much love Prius owners!
Thank you!! thank you!! thank you!!! I'm convinced you gave me a whole new outlook on the older prius's I now know that it's a great idea to replace the blown gas engine in my daughter's 2014 that just blew a piston arm thru the block. I really didn't know if it was the right decision until I watched some of ur awesome videos thanks again by sharing ur extensive knowledge of these cars you are providing a great service to the less experienced!!! Thanks again brother!!! 👍
Bought an 06 Prius with 131k miles. My wife's 09 Camry was not working. and i saw the low mileage, went to drive it and it drove great. All i've done is replaced the 2 front tires ($150 new), replaced HID's, Led fog lights, key fob case, wipers, LED inside lighting, and the car looks great! We took it to Santa barbara over the weekend for our anniversary and it drove like champ. Definitely get better mpg in the city, as on the hills it was averaging like 27mpg but that was very short spurts. So excited about having one of the best built cars. I already have the first gen tundra which is another legendary bulletproof truck! thanks for the video!
I purchased it at the beginning of Nov-23. Model 2006. I love it for its look inside - looks so funky comparing to other models and drives beautifully.
Yes! You are not the first person to say this… Even a 20-year-old design somehow still looks futuristic. What an amazing car. Please like and subscribe if you haven’t already :)
Hi Drew, good videos...learning a lot. Just wanted to mention the back-up beep is easily turned off with a ScanGauge II or similar device. I did mine (a 2010.)
Ha-ha, I bought my first Prius from my job changing to a long commute. Years later I now have 4 Gen2 and One Prius V. Highest mileage one has 337,000, lowest one has 226,000. Unreal how little it takes to keep these on the road.
We have a 2005 and a 2008. Both needed front struts and the 2008 needed the inverter water pump replaced. Otherwise they’ve been amazing. My son drove the 2005 without oil twice (forgot to refill it when he changed the oil) and it’s still running. It’s really bulletproof.
I was in a bind and rented a Gen 2 2007. I was told by the guy that rents these to dashers and he told me If I buy one get a Gen2. He wanted me to rent his for 3 months then he would sell me his for $5,000 I rented it 5 weeks and picked up a gen 2 2004 with a salvage title for $3K. I still drove his for the 3 months I was there. Then I returned it hopped in mine and drove mine back home. Mine now has 180K miles on it and it runs like a Cat in a Chinese Restaurant. I use mine for work and we sleep in it 3 weeks a month. It`s by far the best car I have bought for work. We are getting ready to build a deck in it after we remove the seats so we can deliver packages in it and sleep in it on the road while we are working.
@@soaky55 We travel and Doordash. We normally work 3 weeks go to Vegas for a week then back to Cali for 3 weeks. The build was finished today and it came out super clean. I still need to box in a section that can only be seen when the doors are open. But if you look in it right now you would assume I have an expensive cover on with the seats down. We also do Package delivery for Doordash each day to start the day. These cars are insanely reliable and a ton of room for such a short car.
I want one of these cars and you made me feel better about potentially moving forward with purchasing one. It'd be cool to get one shipped because there aren't any nearby me for a decent price.
I got a 2004 Gen2 Prius... baby blue color :( Bought for $5k at 35k miles. 225k miles, original everything just about. MFD repair ($250), tires, fluid changes, sparkplugs, 12v battery are about the only expenses. Using Torque, all 14 pairs of NiMH batt blocks are all within 0.1v min/max of each other. I just did my brakes... they were original factory brakes....inside pad prob had another 30k on it, but did pads/rotor and rear shoes (which had lots of material left) Also replaced headlight lenses 10yrs ago due to hazing. Today, they still look new. I does burn oil unfortunately.... about 1/3qt per 5,000miles. ha ha (I change every 5k-ish with high-mileage Mobile1 past few years. 46-55mpg avg... depending on if I'm 60mph or 80mph. rock on you Prius drivers..... just don't camp in left lane, with blinker on, please!!!
Please post more 2nd gen prius content im obsessed with these vehicles. Ive had two of them now and discover fans like you all over the US. Toyota blessed us with a great car and i love learning more about commonalities between owners. Thank you so much this made my day. 😊
My parents bought an 2008 new, it has 267k now. Great car , but can you help me understand why they designed the fuel pump and fuel tank as a sealed unit like they did?
I do all my own diy and I’m starting to look into getting a Prius. I have a mk4 Jetta tdi now I use for mpg but I spent 5 grand on performance upgrades and replacing most of all the wear parts on a 200k car. The battery replacements don’t look too bad to do luckily.
Excellent video you are very knowledgeable. The clock spring on my Airbag just went out at 180,000 miles. The cruise control works once in a while Not sure what's going on there. Well done.... one small advice though... do "stop" at the STOP signs 😉
Thank you so very much :-) I do have a video on here somewhere on how to change the clock spring. It’s very easy. In the video, I use a metal pic. I probably should’ve thrown it out there that I’ve done it 5 million times and don’t do as I do, do as I say hahahahahaha please use a plastic pic. For the stop sign, totally guilty! Where I live, it’s very rural, and I roll through that one when no one else is there way too often. A little conviction is not a bad thing Please subscribe! I love these cars, and every opportunity I get to share something about them, I posted here
I have an '07 Prius with 155,000 miles. 2nd owner. Changed oil every 3000 miles. However, more recently started burning 3 quarts of oil between oil changes - started with burning 1 quart between oil changes when I bought the car in 2014 at 87000 miles. Do you have any recommendations about what to do with this car? My Wife says get a gen 3 Prius because she wants a newer car but, I think this 2nd gen is the better car and will last longer with lower cost. I am on original traction battery but have been cooling it full time with a scan gauge operating the fan. Car gets 42 MPG. I don't want to continue burning oil as it will damage the cat and is bad for the environment. Thoughts? Thank you.
my son has a 2005 prius. He's had it for over ten years. Yes it needed a new hybrid battery pack, but it's a great car. I want to see it last for 30 years. I'm sure it will easily, I've changed the 3 way heat storage unit valve, but haven't needed to change the inverter pump yet. I am trying to convince him to get a new MFD (the display) unit. And he's had a problem a couple times with the dash display. I keep telling him that his grandpa or I can change the capacitor easy enough ( we're both good electronic techs) but he's holding off on that LOL.. I've worked on a couple of other gen. 2's, and I love them. If I didn't have a camry, I'd buy one. thanks for the video. I'm not scared of Climate Change, but I the idea of saving energy.
Last week I brought my 2008 prius gen 2 with 141k miles (I bought it last year for 7500 usd from an old couple) to the Toyota dealer in The Netherlands. A big red triangle on the dash with the car and exclamation sign on the touchscreen came up. It said there was something wrong with the hybrid package. The dealer did some reading on the car, and they told me the dc converter did not convert well so the risk of getting a short circuit in the hybrid system is pretty high. They told that the dc converter cost without taxes about 3000 USD, with labour cost it will cost around 5000 to 6000 USD in total. However, they said that when you replace the dc converter it is still not problem free. Other problems that are connected to the dc converter or hybrid system might occur. Is this true? Or is this a protocol of the dealer to communicate such things? They offered me to sell the car to them for 2000 USD. Should I keep and fix it elsewhere or sell the car?
Bought mine new in 2005, great car @100k miles now. I'm replacing the HV battery now due to intermittent red triangle, along with unusual charging behavior and cooling fan constantly running high.
@@HeyAndrooSky I decided to hold off on replacing the traction battery for now. I recharged the 12v a couple times and finally removed the HV safety plug and reinserted it... everything is working great again. I think the "fix" was the removal of the HV safety plug and then reinserting it, not sure what that did w/r to resetting stuff (like the BMS etc.). So, after 200 miles, things look good, hopefully the HV battery will continue on for a while.
I got one never had trouble until now had plock light with triangle of death come on. I got battery changed everything was fine then yesterday had same issue maybe I turned it off without parking. It wouldn't start but got it started. The triangle of death didn't go away I messed around with turning car off and on then went into maintenance and the triangle light went away. The light hasn't come back on I been driving should I go get diagnostics done or go when light comes back? The car has been well maintained has 152,000 miles. Also, replaced wheel front bearings 4times maybe mechanic greases them? It's 2004 prius.
Hi. Enjoyed your video. I have a 2006 pirus with 275000km k's and a 2003 E240 merc with only 37000km k's, its mint. Im in NZ The mercs forsale. Rather keep the pirus. Mercs a good car but pirus does everything and more. Ive put a small lift kit in to get over drives etc without scraping undercarage and just the normal items serviced. Around town and daily the pirus is great. Across country pirus good too, merc might be slighty more comfortable long distance.
I can totally relate to this! The two nicest vehicles I have access to right now for daily driving are a fourth generation Prius, and a 1998 Toyota Celsior C-type with the F package. On paper there should be no comparison, but man this Prius is hard to beat
Just bought a 2008 today and it took $15 to fill up! I almost cried because I couldn’t believe how cheap it was to fill up. I’m use to paying over $60 every week to fill up. It’s crazy good and drives awesome. Also the climate control is amazing when camping in it. Win win.
I have a 2007 Prius that I bought from a friend (original owner), and I love it. Had it five years now and about 60k miles (it had 101k when I got it), and it hums like a top. I love it. I miss driving a stick ... previous car was a 5-speed 94 Accord EX that I put over 250k miles on ... but I really do love this car.
I just bought an 08 with 244K from a dealer in SC. 3 days later it threw up a cat code. I bought a bottle of cat clean and before I could use it the light went back out. Other than that it runs good. I previously owned a 2010 Prius I drove for 3 years and other than adding oil every once in a while gave me no problems until it started then it was brakes 3000.00 and something that made it miss really bad on start up then it would smooth out. Got rid of it!
For a heavy commuter this is my favorite car. I have been commuting around 24,000-26,000miles a year for 8 years. I only buy 08 or 09 Prius and keep my budget under 11,000 purchase price. So far they have been amazing. The only reason why I have been through 3 is because people crashing into the back and totaling my car. I usually buy single owner, carfax must show all maintenance done, clean title no accidents, under 110,000 miles. Once I get car I usually do oil change, transmission fluid change, PVC valve, sparkplugs/ignition coil, and all new brakes/ fluid flush. Sometimes heeadlight/headlight restoration. Have got my cars 180,000 plus miles with little to no maintenance or problems. Hidden gem commuter for the price especially with gas prices California has right now. Also each time my cars have been totalled out they still give me 7000-8000 dollars. May not be the prettiest but economically best bang for your buck.
Hi Drew! I have a 2005 with 180K. Car has been awesome and I've just done the common fixes and maintenance. I do have one recurring problem that was covered by a Toyota TSB for water intrusion into cylinder 1 (or 2, etc). Have you ever done this fix yourself or addressed in a video? The TSB mentions seam sealer between the driver and passenger cowl. I'm tired of rusted spark plugs every 40-60k! Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks! Believe it or not that’s a first! I’ve never heard this. The tailgate channel at the roof is a big issue but never this. The same approach might work - find the crack, clean extremely well with solvent or isopropyl, and use an outdoor clear silicone. You can also put ridiculous globs of dielectric grease on the susceptible area of the plug. Gross and kind of rigged but it will work for sure. Godspeed friend! Please like and subscribe if you haven’t already :)
I don’t have anyone in the NeFla area that I could recommend. I am about to do a video on how I pick them for my inventory, that should help you pick one for your self. I can ship you one if you want
I live in NC and keep a watch on Facebook Marketplace for Gen 2s. They usually have quite a few of them. There is also Ebay but FB usually has cars close enough for me to go see them in person. I love Gen2s!
Im still daily driving my 2008 with only 124k miles. Im the original owner. Bought it brand new with 3miles on the ODO. Hybrid battery is still good. Replaced the water pump at 120k, thermostat, coolant inverter at 118k, spark plugs, brakes and im about to change out the suspension. This car's a TANK. Its the only other car that can stand next to my 974runner limited that has 226k on the odo.
If You Meant oil, it doesn’t hurt. Get it from toyota and be sure to do it right

I got 2004, one of only 86 that were brought to Finland that year. Still working fine. Hybrid battery and touchscreen has been replaced, other than that, just normal maintenance.
Forgot to mention I also replaced the combo meter in my 09. I sent it off to a guy in north TX, and he put new capacitors on it. Taking that dash apart was a beast but I did it. 💪🏾
A brand new aftermarket gas tank is maybe 450 bucks, and a good rust free used one should be a little bit less. If I recall, it’s about a four hour job, but that is a very foggy memory of “the book“ so just the math tells me that that’s a little bit expensive… sometimes people take advantage. A customer just told me they got quoted $3800 at a Toyota dealership to have a brand new battery installed in a second generation. What!? The battery costs $1997, brand new, at Toyota, and any technician worth their salt should be able to comfortably do it in under an hour. Even with some extra profit, the dealership should be under $2500, where is the other 1300 going? get a lot of quotes and try to find a Prius specialist in your area that is not the Toyota dealer
I got my 07 Prius, it has 230k, I keep my car running well, and take good care of it. I’m going to give this car to my sister, she pick this car over Ford 2013 bc it has great gas mileage.
This is an amazing, informative, video, I love it! Thank you so much for sharing! I am thinking about getting an 05 Prius with 141,000miles and it seems like a great deal, except… it’s averaging ~32mpg. I think that there are likely a few factors at play, it’s a bit cold here in MT (like 40F today so not crazy), it needs a new air filter, and I imagine it’s the original hybrid battery. I’m not shying away if it needs a new hybrid battery, but it would factor into my price negotiation. 28:56 My questions are, is 32mpg reasonable? (From my research it seems pretty low.) And if the mileage is too low, is there anything else I should be worried about? Or is it likely a culprit of the things I mentioned? Thank you for any help, I really appreciate it!!
32mpg pretty low if you drive it like a prius should. But, if air filter is plugged, leaking injectors, clogged cat, worn plugs, low tire pressure, alignment, bad wheel bearings all could effect mpg. And of course how it's driven matters the most! If the 32mpg is from someone who stomps gas, stomps brake, or worse drives with both feet on pedal...dragging the brakes....32mpg makes sense. If you can, take it for a few mile test drive. Reset the MPG once it's warmed up and on the road. Ideally you want stable speeds.... If MPG is 45+mpg, you're a-ok. If still low 30s, then one or more of the above items likely.
Hey drew! I’m on the fence! I have an opportunity to buy a 2005 with 220,000KM on it for $5800 all in. I get concerned with the life of the battery. I heard that these did not have a fan cooling filter in the cabin, what do you think of this? Should I get it inspected? Do I need to worry about it? Thanks!
Hello! The US models did - and that doesn’t sound bad at all. I think I’d get 7k plus tax and fees on my lot Don’t worry about the battery they are rebuildable. Still the best used car in its realm. 2003-8 Corolla is great too
I'm getting one gifted to me for free for helping out an eldery couple, the prius was the lady's late husband's daily. Unfortunately it hasnt been driven and was told the hybrid battery died since it wasnt driven when the pandemic happened. I plan on DIY the replacement for the hybrid battery using ChrisFix's tutorial on the change. I cant wait to get that gen 2 as my first ever owned car! It is definitely better than driving my late dad's old nissan titan 2005
Love it that’s awesome!!! Watch a lot of videos. Christ fix did a good job producing that. He’s excellent that way. But watch what goes into reconditioning cells and save your self some money. Please subscribe :)
Car is totally reliable. My 2017 Prius has about 225,000 miles on it and no issues at all. Insurance isn’t a fan because of the parts being expensive. Sort of the downfall.
16+ are great. Certainly any prius is better than it’s non prius competitors - the undisputed kind is always 2004-2009. They couple 4th gens we’ve have been awesome. Almost grabbed a 5th gen but way to financial risk being my last bid (on a used) was a couple grand over msrp
Same. I lived to tell the tale of the 2013 Cruze. Absolute disaster at ~170k miles. Does nothing but leak and suck oil into the intake and have issues with gasket after gasket!
On top of list...water pump and inverter pump, ethanol problems. Battery replacement and faulty/snipped wirings. Suspension and shock. Steering and linkage. Let see what else? A plenty of cosmetics damages and cover ups over time.

I bought an 2008 Prius 5 months with 213k miles for 2k. Really good car honestly
Be sure to use a OEM denso pump too
I put the one from Mercedes Benz...it has lasted 6 yrs..
Lived that on a hot Tucson Aug evening. Not fun, but easy to fix. Use genuine Toyota parts. Or you'll be sorry!
How does it leave you stranded? I drove a couple hours on a hot day slow and easy with a failed pump!
Keep one on you! 30$ Swap it out quick and back on The road
But the fall of 2027 I will be beginning to purchase them in Japan and ship them over (they have to be 25 years old to come here - I almost bought a 1999 Prius last night but I worry about The battery cells not being available here)
It’s funny you mentioned land cruiser… I almost bought a j100 Diesel for my wife in Japan. She was very into the whole Diesel thing, but they just don’t cruise at 80 on the expressway like a gas unit
What year we want a 2008 but heard they’re less reliable than a 03’
Love my Gen 2 Prius.

Hi, you don’t mind me asking, how much did you paid for the hybrid at Toyota??
@@hecg83 the hybrid battery was around $2000 including taxes at Longo Toyota. Keep in mind the ECU is not included so you need to transfer it from the old battery.
@@crooner2007 wow!!!!! That’s an amazing price!!!!!!! So they sold you just the battery correct. You did the labor. I need to find a dealer like that one!
I just went to the dealership and scheduled a hybrid battery install on my 09. Battery was 1950 + tax, and the service will be $550. It's well worth it to me. Mine has 248k miles.
@@SeanBaker excellent deal on the battery plus install. Here in California it would have been more than that for labor. Congratulations!
Hi Drew,
I am from Sweden, as I moved here recently from the Middle East, I was in search of a car that was reliable and little easy on the pocket in terms of fuel consumption.
2001 toyota prius owner with 150k miles. So excited to see how long i can have it
My 2006 I have had 4yrs now.
I need a new clock spring too, you are doing it yourself?? I'm a bit scared to be messing with the airbag area. might just pay someone to do it.
How much was replacing the battery?

Great info. Just picked up a 2004 with 135k miles. Two owners. Completely clean record. So glad to have a reliable car.
I’m gonna pick up a 2nd gen next weekend, and I can’t WAAAAIT to have a reliable car.

Great review. Just bought one. A silver 2004. So i am pretty new to the club🎉
That is hilarious… Running like a cat in a Chinese Restaurant… Bravo

I just did my brakes... they were original factory brakes....inside pad prob had another 30k on it, but did pads/rotor and rear shoes (which had lots of material left)
Also replaced headlight lenses 10yrs ago due to hazing. Today, they still look new.
I does burn oil unfortunately.... about 1/3qt per 5,000miles. ha ha (I change every 5k-ish with high-mileage Mobile1 past few years.

A little conviction is not a bad thing

You said prius is better than corolla. How about the new'ish 1.8 hybrid corolla which has the same exact engine and eCVT with prius has?
Check the 12v yet? Mine had the same issues and went away with a new battery

Win win.

I agree! They are also epic for small handyman business, taxi, delivery etc

Thanks! Believe it or not that’s a first! I’ve never heard this. The tailgate channel at the roof is a big issue but never this. The same approach might work - find the crack, clean extremely well with solvent or isopropyl, and use an outdoor clear silicone.

Does $2,300-$2,600 sound right to get fuel sender unit replaced if it’s built into the pump assembly?
I bought a 2008 Prius with 110k miles for $6200 after hearing good things about it. Looking forward for more miles on it.
Well I'm in Schenectady and i just purchased a 2007 with 112,000 it is a fantastic car! if i need work would you consider helping me out?
Wow bro you're so knowledgeable about prius
This guys is a great sales man 😂😂
I think I’d get 7k plus tax and fees on my lot
Don’t worry about the battery they are rebuildable. Still the best used car in its realm. 2003-8 Corolla is great too
mine has 100k miles and 2008. battery still perfect but getting nervous about it.
My own 2004 Toyota Prius for 20 years and 60.300 miles still good but need new tires and front wheel alignment.
Have an 06 173k ice cold A/C Brilliant car 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
Awesome video!
2005 Toyota Prius with 215,000 + .... as of 3/29/24 ❤❤

Just picked up a 2006 Prius 153k miles 1 owner
What do you mean by 'if you live in the north you something about exhaust.'? You mean air quality testing? I thought all the states have them.
I think I meant dealing with them rusting off
@@DrewGarage Got it, thanx.
Almost grabbed a 5th gen but way to financial risk being my last bid (on a used) was a couple grand over msrp
drew does it all!
Many people speak of the head gasket going out like it's so common and repairs being so expensive scares me.
That’s not this car, it’s the 2010-15. The 2004-9 is bulletproof. Please subscribe and watch all the prius videos. They will help :)
I would not trust a chevy cruze or any hyundai over a 2nd gen prius. its not about age, its about build quality.
Same. I lived to tell the tale of the 2013 Cruze. Absolute disaster at ~170k miles. Does nothing but leak and suck oil into the intake and have issues with gasket after gasket!
I just bought a 2007 2nd Gen Prius for $5000 with only 118,000 miles!
In another month, she will be able to buy a beer!
Imagine back in 04 and only pumping 10$ for a full tank
Oh my goodness I know! If only to go back for like a week… Those were way better times
Hybrid mechanics in dutchess county???
On top of list...water pump and inverter pump, ethanol problems. Battery replacement and faulty/snipped wirings. Suspension and shock. Steering and linkage.
Let see what else? A plenty of cosmetics damages and cover ups over time.
What is your shop name a business number? And where are you located?
Hey appreciate it but I am not a public shop. I do all the prep work for our car dealership only. But it thank you :)
Voting has consequences 🤷🏽♂️
We did it Joe!
My mechanic in nyc charges me 600 in labor to put an engine in
2006 prius 406k miles. 50+ mpg.
