Sheogorath is probably my favorite daedric prince. Most modern fiction depicts trickster gods as evil or tyrannical, however, I don't believe this has to be the case. Sheogorath provides a place and a purpose for the mentally ill who would normally be outcast and shunned from society. He inspires art and creativity. He always holds up his end of the bargain, and his artifact is pretty damn useful. And he has some of the most quotable lines in Elder Scrolls. (Yes, Hircine is my second. )
You could look at it that way yes... But I'd like to remind you... this is still... well... a demon. The prince that inspires creativity is also the same demon that literally ripped an innocent woman apart to make instruments. The prince that gives a home for the mentally ill is also the same demon that tricked Malacath into killing a noble orc who's only fault was accepting a cursed sword from Sheo and then Sheo dragged the orc into his own realm to be tortured, having done all of this for simply no reason whatsoever. Just because this viper can hide his fangs doesn't mean he has no venom...
I find it fitting that Sheogorath has such a draw over the fandom. We know he's just as likely to rip out your eyes because he doesn't like their color as he is to bless you with artistic breakthrough because he likes how you doodle flowers all within the same breath but we still love him. He's always a highlight of the game he's featured in and guaranteed to be fun.
It's the great thing about insane characters, you can do alot with them, none of it has to make sense and you can exaggerate in a way that would break immersion elsewhere but is explainable by him being total batsh** crazy lmao
Sheogorath is my favourite Prince because he's such a complex and amazing character. His sphere is madness/mental illness, and I think it's really interesting to see how he views madness. In Skyrim, you cure Pelagius of his madness, but when your dialog says you "fixed" him, Sheogorath actually corrects you on your viewpoint. Plus, he considers sanity boring, but encouraged the Dragonborn to bring one of the more famously mad people back to it. In Oblivion, I think you do also see his Dementia side. For one, you take the journey to become him, and there are times where you can be ironic or just plain cruel simply by player choice (for example, the quest Baiting the Trap, which is considered to have traditions). You also work with the Duke and Duchess, and the Duchess assassinates and tortures people. Relmyna, too, tortures people for "tests", and the Gatekeeper was built in conjunction with Sheogorath too. etc etc, the point is that in Oblivion, as you are taking up his mantle, YOU exhibit both sides just as much as he can. Unfortunately, and sometimes annoyingly enough, he's popular for his little humorous quips, but I think it's also noteworthy about his viewpoint on the concept of time, and the fact he does not abide by it, nor the rules even other Daedric Princes do (such as summoning days, where followers are not to invoke a Prince on a day dedicated to another). He literally invented music, too. He's by far one of the most interesting characters in The Elder Scrolls, and there's just so much about him and his lore that so fascinating. He's one of those characters that seem simply ~lol crazy~ but is super intelligent. I could go on all day, tbh.
Old Sheo is a welcoming sight, standing as a subversion of the dichotomy of Chaos/Order, instead of order being seen as good, you see it as controlling; I love the idea of taking a supposed 'bad' thing and turning it bad, an example, making light the 'evil' and dark the 'good.'
Elizabeth...you my friend, have summed up exactly on how I think about him, granted, I did enjoy his little joke speeches, but after delving more into his realm and personality, I see him more, I guess unique? He is the perfect example of 'never judge a book by its cover' and that world is not so back and white. He is so much more than what we give him credit for.
You know when Sheogorath says "Time is an artificial construct?" He was still Sheo and not Jyggalag, and I think that was his lowest point, when he was deepest in Dementia. Even to the end, he defied Jyggalag's Order by employing the darkest aspect of his madness.
I read somewhere that in Skyrim, while he was once the hero of Kvatch, that they/he is trying to help people like Pelagius in their own Sheogorath way. The HoK may be the mad god now but the goodness still seeps through sometimes. I genuinely find it kinda sweet.
Every time you do one of these, the philosophical message really gets me. Like we've gone through so many of the prince's, and each time I still go "oh, a lore video" but NO!!! IT'S A PHILOSOPHICAL LIFE LESSON IN DISGUISE. My dude, pleas stop, my tiny brain can only take so much revelation.
It is the Revelation that makes it all the more impactful. For he who controls the flow of information and knowledge can ultimately control the world, because as we all know information/ knowledge is the most powerful and most precious thing in the world
Honestly, it is Sheogorath's calm and almost happy-go-lucky attitude that unnerves me. It is like the Joker: You know that he is capable of great cruelty, but sometimes you can't help but laugh at his random nature. This ability to put us at ease when we should be at our most guarded is what makes Sheogorath so terrifying.

As a bit of a personal theory, I think part of Sheogorath's actions are born of seeing US (as in the people of Tamriel) as the 'truly' crazy ones. Why does his world have nobility? Because he thinks we're nuts to have it in Tamriel with how inept, corrupt, and paranoid nobility tends to be. Why have a justice system at all? Because he sees it as crazy trying to keep people in line, and so on and so forth. But above all else, he has these things to show US how nutty we really are.

I'm imagining Drew is trapped on Nirn, exploring every corner of the Empire for research that he then sends to Micheal and Scott via a portal to Earth. Along with voice recordings.
His duality is made more interesting by the names he goes by. Sheogorath is a rather menacing name, if you ask me; Jyggalag sounds more like the name of a clown by comparison. Perhaps the historical account was intentionally twisted by the Daedra as another aspect of their curse. Also, if Jyggalag knows future events and believes in determinism, he would have known he would be cursed to sow chaos and accepted it as part of his purpose as well. ...alternatively, maybe the whole thing is flipped and his account of the Daedric curse is twisted by his inherent insanity. He was always crazy and he's not 'allowed to turn into Jyggalag' once per age but forced to believe in order and determinism when in that form and cursed to always believe that his current form is against his true nature and purpose no matter what form he takes. I don't know. Maybe I'm just crazy.
From what I know, Jyggalag's every move was decided by logic. He didn't think that the other Princes would work together to curse him because of their long standing rivalries.
In ESO, when he drives the head of the mages guild to madness... well I freaking love that quest if only for watching how he plays on her the whole time.
Wait, head of the Mage's Guild who? Traven was the head before the Hero of Kvatch took over, which is dependent on YOUR character's gender. Unless you mean one of the hall leaders??? If so, which one? I'm so confused ;;-;;
@@ChoiShiki304 They are talking about in Elder Scrolls Online. Sheogorath drove Shalidor insane and during the questline he turns the master of Inculabula, Valaste, insane to. You can either save her or let Sheogorath take her.
You're missing a few things from the grocery list. But ah, I won't blame you, I'll just take it out on one of your legs. After all, one of the items on the list IS a human leg, so you would be a rrrripe candidate! :)

Hmm I guess you're right. Wasn't really meant that way but coping with bad thoughts through humor is a very human thing and Sheo is probably the most human of the princes. After all he used to be one.
@@Todesnuss "he used to be one" refers to the Hero of Kvatch. The old Sheogorath, Jyggalag was a mockery of his former self, stripping his godly powers, deduced into the horrors of human errors.
If that seemed edgy and prententious to you, don't most of these daedra videos seem edgy and pretentious too? It's the same sorts of observations they make in these videos all the time.
@@DisgruntledGoblin Well tbh _yeah_ , I'll be honest Kirkbride really shitted it up with most of the greater Deadra, shit tbh literally none of the Divines are interesting and honestly I kinda hate Talos, just seems like a narcissist in his aspect of Wulf, maybe I'm just projecting lel. Although I kinda like the older lore on Sheogorath, as long as they don't turn him into ES's Joker, which I figure's only a matter of time what with how gay he was in ESO
Curt Clark I feel the same way. Hearing music from Oblivion and Morrowind always triggers great happy nostalgia like feelings and memories (even though I still play Oblivion relatively often, but still). I don't recall the music in Skyrim ever triggering any emotions, really. The first time I played through Oblivion...man, the music was just perfect.
I found the shivering isles preferable to the mortal world . It seems like Tamriel is always in crisis mode. Sometimes an escape from reality is necessary.
Wasn't Palageus driven mad because the Wolf Queen had a Ring Enchanted to slowly drive it's wearer mad? I feel like I read it in a book about the Wolf Queen.
While I wouldn't put it past Potema to be capable of something like that, Elder Scrolls lore cn be ambiguous sometimes, for the opposite reason as Dark Souls lore. There are so MANY books and tomes on TES lore that you can't pin down any one thng as truth without something else coming along to contradict it. It's madness!...but such good madness. The second best kind.
@@ethanquirk28 Actually if I remember right she bought it and something else from a store, then had someone change its enchant, then gave it to Palageus claiming it was to make him a better king.
Xenia A. Well he is known for caring only for the thrill of the hunt, it does not matter to him who dies or lives. He does not care about the state of Nirn, as long as there is the thrill of the hunt
Ilija Kovachevich "He does not care about the state of Nirn, as long as there is the thrill of the hunt" ...and you think that's not evil? You could make the same argument for every single Daedric Prince: Boethia cares only for deceit, conspiracy, treachery and sedition, Namira and Sanguine just want mortals to give in to their darkest desires, Peryite doesn't care about the state of Nirn as long as there are plagues and pandemic diseases etc. Hircine is not even "neutral" as in "not taking any sides" since he rewards those who slay creatures who are weaker than they are -- a hunt is never beneficial towards the prey. There might be small chance that the roles reverse in some instances but that doesn't mean the chances are equal.
Xenia A. How is the hunt not neutral? Hunting helps families feed themselves. Hunting helps for trade, and pride in tradition and trophies! It is the strongest who survive, where two or more are tasked to kill each other to see that they can live longer, or do so as tradition and get pride, or sell what is left of the prey for money, or feed the remains of the prey to yourself, family or friends. That is why the hunt is neutral, it benefits evil and good, it is necessary for all.
Sheo shows how equal things are, even insanity. Just as how dark and evil insanity can be, just as how dark that side is, it can also be very beautiful.
No! wait! Cheese for no one. Which is still cause for a celebration, if you don't like cheese. Me, I think the cheese thing's a bit overplayed. Memes are only mad when they're unexpected, but after the thousandth sodding arrow to the thousandth bloody knee, you just start wondering how busy the Temple of Mara is with all those marriages...I now pronounce you arrow and cheese! You may bloody well go home. Let's change up the formula, shall we? I'll send a tumbling sabrecat your way from down out of the sky, maybe he'll give you some inspiration. Don't forget to follow the Arctic Fox off the ledge! Don't worry, he can fly. Physics engines! What fun!
That opening monologue was actually an accurate description of one of the theories of the nature of the setting, that reality is a test for mortals to escape from via personal apotheosis and transcendence. Like Vivec and the tribunal came close to. Notably, Vivec earned Sheogorath's ire specifically, almost like he came close to the answer, but failed at the last step. For the underprepaired, reading an Elder scroll causes blindness and insanity. Insanity IS Sheogorath, and in Skyrim, the Prince appears with blank white eyes associated with blindness. During Oblivion, the Champion/Player character/Sheogorath II is told that they would be the one to write the next Elder Scroll. Sheogorath is described as a Sithis shaped hole in the world. Sithis is true nothingness, primordial chaos and the ultimate force of change. Sheogogorath does not exist unless someone takes up the mantle of madness, is the most chaotic prince, and always seems to disrupt the status quo. In short, Sheogorath's true goal is to drive mortals to understand the true nature of reality, and transcend it.
I love the ending of this video. The one who was warning us about the dangers of escapism closes the video with the fantasy of writing the script within the world of the elder scrolls. This has become my favorite videos of the series.
I think the book with the story about how Sheogorath "gave men the gift of music" is the perfect representation of him. He saw a woman walking in the woods while the birds were chirping and thought how it was a shame that men could not make the same wondrous sounds. So he dismembered the woman and fashioned instruments from her bones and skin and gave them to men so that they could make music.
An unpredictable man you can always predict to be unpredictable. Predictably, it's the predictable ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they are going to do something incredibly stupid...
The man, the myth, the legend, Drew the Daedralogist layin down the very best Elder Scrolls videos! I've been waiting for this video! Great job Drew! All hail Sheogorath!
Perhaps your best video yet Drew!! I live to serve. Sheogorath is subtle because madness is subtle. It never comes quickly, madness is slow and quiet. Once it takes hold you cannot get escape.
If Sheogorath can outsmart other Daedric Princes, then he'd have no trouble with mortals. I think to put it simply, Sheogorath being the Daedric Prince of Madness would imply a split personality so wouldn't that be a reason for the personality changes as well?
When I played the Shivering Isles, the hero of Kvatch was a female Altmer and way better looking. Some people say, Sheogorath has just assumed his old form -- but that can't be true. Have you seen his eyes? They were yellow cat eyes in Oblivion but are white in Skyrim. That dude in the Pelagius wing must be an imposter.
I always found the Isles town of Split to be one of the most fascinating places in his realm. There, people are split into the "light" and "dark" aspects of themselves... and hate each other.
I swear to god the way Scott Michael and Drew narrate these videos is absolutely incredible. So calm and relaxing and also incredibly clear and easy to follow while at the same time wholesomely entertaining the whole way through. I found this channel about a year ago and i constantly check my notifications hoping there is a new video up. Keep up the good work guys. Love from Prince Edward Island, Canada.
So basically, anyone who plays video games or reads a book or a novel or does/watches anything remotely artistic or for entertainment is susceptible to the influence of Sheogorath, because all those represent a form of escapism, pretty much everything we do in modern society is a form of escape from reality, so, in that sense, Sheogorath has a way bigger influence than we might think. I guess it would make sense with that one tale which describes a legend about how Sheogorath supposedly invented music.
as much as i'm with you, the aedra are harder to make videos on, for several reasons. for starters they very rarely deal with mortals, unlike the deadra. so while we know what they each represent, we don't understand their patterns of behavior for the sake of analysis. If i'm not mistaken, the only instance of a divine communicating directly with someone is Akatosh in (i believe) Oblivion. having said that, I'd fucking love an akatosh vid.
"Mania is the home of mad artists and creative thinkers. But, do not assume that it is any less dangerous than Dementia." - TESIV: Oblivion, Shivering Isles, Loading Screen. Never underestimate Sheogoraths will and reasoning, lest you're partial to having your entrails splayed about as confetti!
I'm still not convinced that Jyggalag existed at all. I think the whole shivering isles dlc was Sheogoraths attempt to make the Hero of Kvatch believe he was the Mad God thus driving him/her mad. Think about it: Jyggalag hasn't been mentioned ANYWHERE, no books, no lore, nothing either before nor after the Shivering Isles, despite supposedly being so powerful he almost conquered oblivion and all the other princes' spheres. If the princes' really cursed Jyggalag into Sheogorath, there is no way they would let him trick them as many times as he has according to the lore that actually exists. Also, whenever Sheo has dealt with mortals his goals has always been the same; driving them mad. Sure he usually does it by not doing anything, it seems to be his favorite method, but that is why noone suspects him of his other aspect, the God of Creativity, who definitely would be crazy enough to change his whole realm into a questing-ground for a pompous fool who believes him/herself to be the master of his/her own fate. In conclusion: Sheogorath trolled everyone to oblivion. Literally.
Hes mentioned in the Book of Daedra which was written in the 1st era I believe. Also: Skyrim Sheo summarizes the HoK's actions, and then "a title passed to me to myself every few thousand years or so." He references the curse and greymarch quite a bit
I always felt like Sheogorath shows the Dragonborn his softer side because the part of him that's still HoK took one look at the DB and thought "First time?"
noone else ot share this with. so ill post here. i LOVE Sheogorath. i decided to do a unique playthrough. playing on legendary + survival and refuse to level up until every skill is legendary. as such my vision is blurry because im always sleepy. was really sleepy when GothEyes MacDude asked me to find his boss. sweet talked some maids stole 20 pounds ov silver. woke up in a dead kings head. wabbajaked my way out. now i have 20/20 vision. THANKS SheGo!
I like to think that Sheogorath's change was a result of the Greymarch. His prank on Border Watch was almost *orderly* in how it preyed on their local prophesy. In Skyrim, he is the transformed Hero of Kvatch, who might be somewhat more sane given his recollection of the Oblivion Crisis, Martin, and two of the Guilds.
What a delightful story, and especially a quite one. Not quiet, but quite! Especially even when you are quiet, but mainly when your loud, too loud! Loud enough to have the entire Mundus hear you. And when that happens, out comes the vocal chords! And I can make a lovely wind chime with’em, how ‘bout that?
So, the nereverine is immortal. The hero of Kvatch (aka sheogorath) is, well, a daedra. The dragonborn is likely stuck in apocrypha. That means that all the main characters from elder scrolls 3, 4, 5, and 6 will all be alive at the same time (assuming elder scrolls 6 will take place after skyrim). I would love to see them all interact in a future game, that would be beautiful.
That was a good video FudgeMuppet, delving into Sheogorath and into his madness, character and personality. Gotta say, he's not one of my favourite Princes but this was a good dissection of him.
Moon sugar daddy. The proper way to steal a sweet roll is on a Tuesday. Noon would be a preferred time. Always be sure to beat the priest over the head with it and they can't be insulted.
This is so fucking real. Every time I play skyrim I walk out of my room a week or two later questioning why it's really been two weeks that I've done nothing. I happen to be on one of those binges right now.
Would Sheogorath be an allusion to obsession, schizophrenia and drug adction? He personifies all characteristics and traits of the people who suffer with these psychiatric disorders: Paranoia, fixation, the necessity of escaping from reality(completely alienation from it in the case of psychosis)...
Daedric. Prince. of Madness. The allegory couldn't be more obvious if it jumped up out of the dead cheese horse's coffin and slapped you in the face with a giant slaughterfish. It's a delciate state of mind!
Davi Moreira Sheogorath is the tortured epitome of everything it means to oppose calmness, order and logic. He is a broken fragment of the most powerful of the Daedric Princes, cast in a direct mockery of his former being by the rest of his kind. You could argue that his madness does not come from his semblance but instead the pain of having to go against every ounce of his inner being for the rest of eternity. The once proud Daedric Prince of order destined to forevermore squander and destroy everything he holds dear. He has become the essence of disorder and as such his own mind has fled from such horror, leaving just Sheogorath in its place
What I kind of like about the ES series, even though things aren't black and white, is that Madness is the 'good'/better side in the dichotomy of Chaos and Order.
@@ethanquirk28 indeed. Sheogorath is a metaphysical form of madness, Sheogorath and the Shivering Isle wouldn't exists without a host that will took the role of "deadric prince". Jyggalag is one example, his freedom from the never ending cycle of Greymarch, the battle of his former and broken self. Unfortunately, the Hero of Kvatch took the role without the cycle, losing his indentity and later known as Sheogorath

You know when Sheogorath says "Time is an artificial construct?" He was still Sheo and not Jyggalag, and I think that was his lowest point, when he was deepest in Dementia. Even to the end, he defied Jyggalag's Order by employing the darkest aspect of his madness.
Did he call me a Jolly codger?
I read somewhere that in Skyrim, while he was once the hero of Kvatch, that they/he is trying to help people like Pelagius in their own Sheogorath way. The HoK may be the mad god now but the goodness still seeps through sometimes. I genuinely find it kinda sweet.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense lol
I love the shivering isles. Mania gives me great inspiration.
In ESO, when he drives the head of the mages guild to madness... well I freaking love that quest if only for watching how he plays on her the whole time.

That amazing music is from Oblivion :)
Yeah I know
Nic Wilson Oblivion and Morrowind had some really exceptional scores...it's always hard for me to remember any of the ambient music in Skyrim.
The title of Deadric prince of madness is passed from him to himself at every end of an Era.

OF DERTH PLAGEIOUS THE WISE
One of my favorite two daedric princes, with Hircine. I just love the neutral Daedric princes
Hircine, the Daedric Prince of murdering the weaker ones is neutral? Shut up, Sheogorath!
Xenia A. Well he is known for caring only for the thrill of the hunt, it does not matter to him who dies or lives. He does not care about the state of Nirn, as long as there is the thrill of the hunt
Ilija Kovachevich "He does not care about the state of Nirn, as long as there is the thrill of the hunt"
...and you think that's not evil?
Xenia A. What I’m saying is it is Evil, yet it is also good. That is why he is neutral
Sheo shows how equal things are, even insanity. Just as how dark and evil insanity can be, just as how dark that side is, it can also be very beautiful.

Curt Clark I read this in Sheogorath’s voice
My favourite daedric prince. Enjoying the daedra lore videos, keep it up!
"Tis a silly place" gotta love the monthy python references

If Sheogorath can outsmart other Daedric Princes, then he'd have no trouble with mortals.
I think to put it simply, Sheogorath being the Daedric Prince of Madness would imply a split personality so wouldn't that be a reason for the personality changes as well?

So basically, anyone who plays video games or reads a book or a novel or does/watches anything remotely artistic or for entertainment is susceptible to the influence of Sheogorath, because all those represent a form of escapism, pretty much everything we do in modern society is a form of escape from reality, so, in that sense, Sheogorath has a way bigger influence than we might think.
I guess it would make sense with that one tale which describes a legend about how Sheogorath supposedly invented music.
I hope we get some Aedra videos soon. Totally love these videos, would be neat to see what you could do with the Aedra
as much as i'm with you, the aedra are harder to make videos on, for several reasons. for starters they very rarely deal with mortals, unlike the deadra. so while we know what they each represent, we don't understand their patterns of behavior for the sake of analysis.

Literally.
Jyggalag was mentioned in a dagger fall book, but only his name and no info.
Now, why would a being that could clearly deduce future events allow himself to be cursed to become the very opposite of what he stood for?
Hes mentioned in the Book of Daedra which was written in the 1st era I believe.
Also: Skyrim Sheo summarizes the HoK's actions, and then "a title passed to me to myself every few thousand years or so."
He references the curse and greymarch quite a bit
It's rumored that Hermaeus Mora wants FudgeMuppet's Knowledge to add to Apocrypha.
Don't forget that the Sheogorath in Skyrim was the Hero of Kvatch. I think that would make him more benevolent than the old one.

He has become the essence of disorder and as such his own mind has fled from such horror, leaving just Sheogorath in its place
