Is a 29 Foot Random Wire Too Short For 40m

- On March 1, 2024, I did a Late Shift Parks on the Air (#POTA) activation at Rush Oak Openings (K-5283) in WNY. For Bob Heil (K9EID), now a silent key, I used a purple random wire antenna with the ICOM 7300. I wanted to see how the antenna did on 40 meters in the evening.

Love the experiments! That's what this is all about!
Thanks, TO. POTA is a fun way to try out different antennas, modes and bands.
It is awesome being in your log and thank you for picking me up. Moe KO4GBB
You bet! Thanks for checking out the video too. I looking forward to getting you in the log again soon.
My experience with a 29’ random wire has been great. I’ve got it in an inverted V with a 17’ counterpoise running underneath it. I’ve got a 9:1 and a 1:1 at the feed point and I’m using a mat-tuner. Made a 5,000 mile plus 5W SSB QSO during the ARRL DX contest. It tunes on 80m and I’ve made a few 80m contacts. 40m is useable. One time I accidentally checked into the Big Guns DX Net on 7.128 with 5W. I find that the best band with this antenna is 30m. The higher bands perform well too.
Thanks, I hadn't thought about an inverted V configuration for it. That might be handy if I'm using a smaller mast, like my SOTABEAMS Carbon 6. I found when I used the smaller counterpoise, it lowered the SWR on 40m so that the 3:1 internal tuner could work it. I'll have to see how that goes with an inverted V.
As always impressed with the random wire. Miss the tie tho… keep up the great activations.
Thanks, I'm sure there will be many more activations--with and without the tie, LOL
Another amazing sunset :)
Yes it was! It's only 15 minutes from my home and one of my favorite places to do late shift POTA activations.
You can always use 14.313 to tune on 20m. The crowd there is the same as on 7.200. :)
I've got a habit of tuning near the middle of the bands, which is why I always forget about 14.313.
Have used a 29 rw plenty, with nelson 1:9’s, with 7300 & 705, always did just fine any way it was oriented.
I've heard good things about the Nelson antennas.
@@MikeN2MAK i have a few of his 1:9 matchbox’s, they work great
@@UABFWSS Nice! I've actually got one of his 1.25m slim jim roll-up antennas I use in the VHF contests. It works great!
Nice....
It was a fun one. Thanks for watching!
the packtenna is 29 feet, so yes it works fine on 40m
I just noticed that the other day. What I really like about this length is the ability to use it a a vertical on my 33' mast, which is great if I don't have a lot of space to setup.
you may want to try a 4 to 1 unun on the 29'. Some times it works better
I might have to give that a shot and see how it goes. I do use a 25' wire with a 4:1 (Rybakov antenna) and it works great.
Shouldn’t be! 😉
Just like the Rybakov, it gets the job done. But at times, I get that sense it's not working as well on the lower bands (it could also be conditions). But that's fine, since there's plenty of benefit with it being multi-banded, a quick setup and a small footprint.
@@MikeN2MAK yeah I agree. It’s a compromise but it’s also very convenient and after all you get to play radio!
