Syed, Neal has said the musicians could write the a incredible range of melodies because of Steve Perry's vocal abilities. Steve is a Counter Tenor Altino and his vocal range is phenomenal. His falsettos he sings seemingly effortlessly. I've yet to hear anyone who can transition from his singing voice to falsetto back to his singing voice, so pure. Many will tell you he sounds better live than recordings and he does. Journey Pianist Jonathan Cain before he heard him live said "there is no way this guy can pull off" the recorded versions of his vocals live "no way!" Well Steve soars in every live concert recording ever performed. I recommend Mother Father from the Escape Tour live from Houston 1981. By then Jonathan had joined the band as their piano/keyboardist and said Steve recorded Mother Father in one take. This is a highly vocally complex song, beautiful and at the end of the song you will hear Steve's amazing falsetto abilities in just one of many songs.

All I got to say is Arnel a beautiful human being with an amazing voice nobody can throw shade on Steve voice but I got to say or nails a better person kind patient and Yoda see how they found him and what he went through amazing story I think there's an Oprah three-part series somewhere on UA-cam it's a must-see what a humble guy

@@NelsonCummings I'll check it out. Never really followed Journey. But the band was on heavy rotation on FM rock stations in the States, so everybody heard that voice. Not necessarily the bands back story. Sounds like there might be some controversy about the band.

This entire concert is well worth watching. Steve’s presence is everything- magic! Even if you have to blur or distort the video for us. Opera isn’t Bob Dylan lyrically either- but oh how gorgeous is that music? Steve’s like an operatic singer. And watch guitar genius, Neil Schon- the most melodic guitarist ever.

Steve Perry's voice is just AMAZING back in the day......The Guitar played Neil was and still considered one of the best in music history. Journey are just legendary!!! Journey was also in the 70's and 80's known as a Rocking out band....very very upbeat....then this song another ballet I can't remember.....took us by surprise!!!! But it made a lot of people cry so people especially the fans went out and bought it and it rose in the top 10 on the Billboard Chart.....so.....as fans we knew that if Rock band like Journey and Led Zeppelin could move us the slow ballets that this was an indication of their Greatness!!!!

Steve Perry is absolutely my favorite male singer. I'm glad that you touched on Neil Schon's melodic sensibility. Steve is such an incredible singer that I think he can overshadow just how good Neil is with his melody lines. He can lay back and serve the song - then step out and hit us with a flurry. A lot of people who can shred a guitar tend to shred constantly. Not Neil. He plays with taste and restraint ....until its time to let loose.

Steve Perry, “The Voice”. My favorite singer, my favorite band, and some of my favorite songs. There was not a weak member in the band. So incredible! I never did and still do not think they were “cheesy”. Such talent. Neal Schon actually played in Santana when he was only 15 years old!!! Neal wasn't initially a fan of the ballads that Steve and Jon so favoured. But then he learned to work with Steve; the way they play off of and complement each other is truly special. And they allowed Neal to get in his licks as well, as they did at the end of this song.

To answer your question: yes, many classic rock lovers from the 60s and 70’s sniff at Journey as being a band who mainly did power ballads that appealed to the “chicks”. You heard the girls screaming in the audience. However, I was and am a classic rock lover AND I also enjoyed listening to allot of Journey on the radio….and it was because of Steve Perry’s voice… which is a once in a generation gift. A natural and powerful alto range.
We no doubt lost allot of great music when he left the band and music altogether for decades. The stress snd lifestyle was destroying him and he left to save himself. In my opinion a great loss to popular music.

You said this so we'll. It's true, he often compared it to "circus life" as the lyrics in Faithfully reflect. He gave his life blood to Journey his instrument was his voice, and paid the price. Guitars and pianos can be replaced, his one in a million Tenor -Altino vocal range of his youth could not, indefinitely. Still, now he sounds incredible! Love forever Steve Perry

I heard a story about this ending guitar solo/melody. They were recording and Neal was playing much more complicated solos and they asked him to play something simpler. Annoyed, or as a joke, he played the simplest thing he could think of. They loved it, and that was how this iconic ending solo developed.

People who would call Journey cheesy just don't like emotional music. Journey makes you feel the song, vocally, instrumentally and lyrically. Steve Perry uses great emotion in his vocals. He makes you believe what he's singing. It's more authentic than someone just singing something straight up with no feeling. His biggest influences were R&B greats like Sam Cooke, and it shows. Neal's guitar is not only melodic, but it's another "voice". Especially on the ballads, he creates emotion with his guitar by bending the strings into or out of a note and creating vibrato much like a vocalist does. As you eluded to, his solos help create and/or continue the mood or moods of the songs. This band is just phenomenal. You really need to listen to more of their music. They've played hard rock, soft rock, pop rock, blues-rock, jazz fusion and even a little psychedelic and Latin.

I've usually hummed a tune while listening to the track, or listen in my head for some orchestral sound that i creatively manipulate, then when i am hearing something good, i find he notes on the guitar. Later i can change it here and there and made certain notes flashier in the spirit of the axe. Come to find out, Gilmour said he does the humming thing too. Also, whistling an improvised tune has provided for some interesting melodic choices.

I've always wondered the same thing basically. I'm in awe of these groups who can take a piece of poetry written by one or more of them and work out the arrangements for every instrument, the backup vocals, etc. Aerosmith did a video somewhat walking the viewer through some of the processes but even that didn't go far enough. I'd give anything to have been a fly on the wall.

Journey started out from two members of Santana, Vocalist Keyboardist Gregg Rollie and Guitarist Neil Schon created a new band which played progressive rock. They added vocalist Steve Perry on their fourth studio album and a more commercial sound finally found success. They had numerous personnel changes along the way. They were a very popular band from the late seventies through the eighties..

neil schon (the guitar player) was originally was part of santana. i think that steve perry was the bands 2nd lead singer. i got hooked on journey like in 6th or 7th grade. (back in 1975 to 1977). they originally had a jazz/rock sound, which i thought sounded cool. the first singer was good. at first, i wasn't to thrilled about steve perry taking over as the lead singer, because, il liked the fist singer. after about a year or two, i warmed up to the new line up and am glad that they picked steve perry as the lead singer. the band journey went from being a good solid band to a "stadium" band. steve perry was the one who made journey into a band that was great. i think that steve perry is (was) one of the more underrated singers of his time.

Thanks for reacting to this dude, glad you liked it!
On the subject of what you said about performance accentuating the song itself, that's why I chose the live version. The studio is good, ofcourse, but the live version is much better IMO because some bands are just better live and give out so much energy.
For the solo part, there's a fun fact for that: Neal originally had down an idea for the solo to be quite proggy and not so related to the song, so some of the band members asked Neal to come up with a better solo and to be more simple but powerful. So he simply wrote/played whatever came to his head, and when he presented it to the band and whoever else, they loved it. Some solos can appear out of thin air even before a song has taken form, and some come around due to the guitar players/song writers talent. Just depends on the circumstances really.
And about the view people have for Journey: you're right, some people do see them as cheesy and as part of that time, but they are still loved as a lot of people see them as one of the quintessential bands of the 80's. My opinion is that I think they're amazing, but I was brought up on them in my dads car being played on cassettes, so I have a soft spot for them. In particular, the Frontiers album and Escape album.

In fact they are 1 band that pretty much sounds the same live as in the studio, and always seem to understand that most people don't go to concerts to see their favorite bands play songs differently ... they go to see them perform the song they way that is familiar to them ... a lot of times, because they want to sing along with it and they're waiting to see their gods play that solo they love so much.

I guess Journey seems like sugary rock songs, it had it's era, and maybe I OD'd on it, b/c I don't even listen to it in a nostalgic sense, but I'll randomly throw on AC/DC's Back In Black every now and then if older rock from the day. 😎

Journey is in the group of bands considered album rock; for more recent times the term arena rock is also used. This type of music is something that professional music critics ( sometimes with a trained formal musical background ) would never like.
Did you say metal? No, they are not metal.

Cheesy today? Absolutely not, I still think they were an exceptional band.

1977-1998 is when they brought Steve Perry on for vocals, the rest in history. They were soo great together. They still tour -different singers singing trying to sing like Steve. Good singers but not Steve
