In The Ring, the fight with the Chief is the easiest boss in the game. All you have to do is run around the desk.. he'll get stuck on the other side between the desk and the shelf, and you can just unload into him until her dies.
As for Sadiko, there are a couple hidden weapons, like a shot gun around her area...

MIchigan: Report from Hell is actually a really cool concept for a horror game, almost like if the movie Rec was made into the game. I love that all the reporters have different personalities, and the voice acting is hilarious. If done by a studio with time and a budget, I could see the concept felshed out into a found footage horror that's either super immersive or a campy fun B-movie type game.

I feel like outlast and RE7 shows that it can work. Having it specifically be a team of reporters would be a cool concept tho I think B horror is the best bet. No normal person would continue reporting in that situation 😂 doesn't mean it can't still be scary AF.

The main thing that you need to consider when assessing Ring: Terror's Realm is that it's quite a bit more faithful to the books than it is to the films.
In the books there's a much greater focus on the idea that Sadako manifests as something more akin to a virus and the series eventually reveals that the world that the books take place in is a simulation, built around Sadako. Sadako never manifests as a ghostly form in the novel, which means that several of the most iconic scenes from the film are not present at all. Both have their merits, as they're trying to achieve different goals with the same rough idea.
I feel like the tone doesn't translate, as the novels really place a lot of focus on the disparity between the idle wealthy and the sleep deprived, overworked and barely functioning working class, who are packed into overcrowded tenements, breathing in toxic air from the traffic and the constant dumping of industrial pollutants into the atmosphere by the nearby chemical factories.
The films are a very loose adaptation that takes the general idea of the novel and reinterprets it as a more conventional ghost story. The original idea has a bit more in common with Parasite Eve, except without the mutants and less focus on scientific realism.

they also decided to do away with her being a haemaphrodite. Honestly I sometimes wonder if there's a happy medium, because when Japan makes a story they'll overcomplicate it and make it bloated. When the west makes a story it seems dumbed down for everyone, in fear that someone won't get it.

From what I've learnt about Michigan, the original Japanese voice acting played the story straight. It looks like when the game came state-side that the voice actors decided to turn it into a goofy B-movie style plot.

I'm not so sure that's true. Japan's best efforts are quite honestly, still a B movie 99% of the time.
Think of the best Japanese movies that are NOT Kurosawa or Miyazaki, what are you thinking of? Tetsuo the Iron Man? Ichi the Killer?

The extreme closeups in the Dracula games are giving me Limbo of the Lost vibes, of all things (please do not suffer through LotL, the only scares are the shocking amount of plagiarism). I wonder if that's coincidence or a style choice in Western Europe-based games in that time period?
The spooky game I enjoyed many a year ago was "Ghosts," a PC point-and-click/FMV experience. Christopher Lee narrates and sends you to investigate a haunted house to uncover ghost stories and their possible truths. The FMV sections are expert interviews with both believers and skeptics as part of the game's point was to come to your own conclusions whether ghosts were fact or fiction. I haven't gone back to see what the scares were like but I can recall the tension of wondering if a scare was around the next corner to this day!
Looking forward to your future videos!

As someone who owns Michigan I will always love it. The simple fact that due to bad programming and story development, the end boss appears to be
    1) An unarmed, nonviolent autistic / mentally handicapped man
    2) Who begs for his life
    3) Who is shot in cold blood by a TV crew
    4) That TV crew broadcast it live to the nation
    5) Who then try to cover their actions in court by saying "So he was the one behind all this..."
It is The Room of survival horror.

I got Dracula resurrection cheap in asda (Britain's Walmart) for £5 ($7) and me and my sister would play abit each morning before school, we liked the cheesy characters, the film like atmosphere, we didn't mind the loading it added anticipation to new area's you never knew what you'd see next. It wasn't great and we knew it but honestly it wasn't that bad. I even bought the boxed PC version just to have on my bookshelf the other year, it'll always be one of my favourite memories of spending time with my sister! Great video 👍

I think the idea of Ring: Terror's Realm could work with the right developers. Imagine an Alan Wake II style game where you play as a detective who is sent to investigate strange deaths. You eventually discover that the deaths are linked to an old cursed video game. In the game, you could swap between modern (as the detective) and the retro (survival horror PS1 style game).

    2 things about Dracula's Resurrection:
1 - You can cheese the game by going straight to the graveyard and get the dragon medallion before entering the Inn. It pretty much saves you some minutes.
2 - The game was localized In Brazil and had SUPERB voice acting for the time, especially Jonathan and Dracula, being played by top dog VAs. Unfortunately the dub didn't come to Steam.

Dracula 2 was my first point & click adventure game and one of the very first games I played on PS1. And I do agree that it is not particularly good version to play with it's load times and especially on HDTV. On CRT TVs it was manageable, but compression still get in the way of late puzzles. Staircase symbols specifically was the worst case. I did experienced Myst much later and think it's good, but Dracula duology is easier to complete and I replay both from time to time.
Countdown Vampires was also one of the first PS1 games I experienced and played it back to back with Silent Hill. And I really enjoy it. I does have some strange quirks, but it always felt like a solid horror game for me. It's also one of rare games that kept me surprised with things like there can be a different final boss on disk 1 and I think I managed to 100% it without any guides just two years ago. I don't replay it very often, but after 21 years I'm pretty sure I've seen and unlocked everything it can offer. There is a thing to keep in mind that curing vampires is required to unlock expanded second playthrough. And it's not hard notice that with blue clips you need to stun vampires twice, while with red clip only once. Their zombie like state is heavily dependent on Moon's current colour. And you can fight Gells even on first playthrough, you just need to time out on second fight with real vampires. And if you collect every coin during expanded playthrough, you will unlock additional scenario where you play as vampire Keith and if you beat that, you will restart first playthrough with infinite grande launcher. I just like this game quiet a lot. There is bad Alone in the Dark/Resident Evil clones, but Countdown Vampires isn't even close to be even considered bad.
Can't say anything about other two games. The Ring looks like an okay game. Michigan: Report from Hell is first person horror game and I don't like horrors in first person. They just don't work for me. I do have rare exceptions with games like Echo Night, Doom and Dementium, but in general I have not interest in any kind of first person horror game.

Multi-disc games were incredibly common on the ps1. The game you are talking about came out in 2001, at the end of the PS1's life, by that time several multi-disc games had already been released, games such as:

    -Resident Evil 2
    -Rival Schools: United by Fate
    -Xenogears

    -Heart of Darkness.
    -Thousand Arms
    -Final Fantasy VIII
    -Gran Turismo 2
-Grandia, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
    -Star Ocean: The Second Story
    -Chrono Cross
    -Armored Core: Master of Arena
    -Wild Arms 2
    -Valkyrie Profile
    -The Legend of Dragoon
    -Parasite Eve II
    -Syphon Filter 2
    -Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
    -Koudelka
    -Fear Effect
    -Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix
    -Galerians
    -Final Fantasy IX
    -Driver 2
    -Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn
    -Dragon Valor

I know this comment can be considered to be a nit-pick, but misunderstanding of what constituted the "adventure" genre is my personal grudge. I am not coming from the place of negativity, I come from the place of love and passion!
Also, besides Sierra games, you can get a game over in "Clock Tower" series, "MacVenture" series, and "Harvester" to name a few point-and-click games! I would recommend checking out every of these, they are real gems!

I just found your channel. Great work overall with this video.
Dracula games: Well...this was different but a fun trash fire.
Countdown Vampires: I never heard of this game. I think Vampire hunter D is better and it is pretty much an RE clone but an actual good one. Parasite Eve is anther good RE inspired game.
The Ring: I know this far too well. I was going to skip this part but your breakdown of the plot and reactions made it worth revisting a game I know far too well due to the streamers and UA-camrs I follow that have played the game.
Michigan Report from Hell: I watched an lp of this but never this took place in Chicago. That's makes this meme game even better.

Didn't see anyone point this out. Vampires in context to jp/ch influenced lore are zombies. Unless strictly stated in w/e game/show that they're western vampires.

I played Dracula on PC for the first time about 7 years ago and unironically enjoyed my time with it. It strode the line of pretty good game play with some chresy nostalgia. The disconcerting character models and camera angles really added a lot of flavor I think - emphasizing that you're in a place you really should not be.
The game's sequel, Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary, was just painful. The first part was passable, but the end made me give up. Imagine I'll try Dracula 3 again in the future just because.

1:13:00 does kinda make sense specifically in the context of the prequel you mentioned it was designed to promote. part of the plot is the idea that there are sort of two sadako's inside the girl- her human side that wants to stop the dark spirit as much as everyone else, and the dark spirit that acts as the movie series protagonist. iirc its just something like when she died that good part of her didn't stay like the bad one- maybe this was meant to reference that good coming back one last time in her virtual form or as she dies or something?

A small correction: at 37:36 you include The X-Files for the PS1 as an example of a 'Resident Evil imitation game'. The problem is that the X-Files game isn't. It's an FMV mystery game. The one you must have been thinking about is X-Files Resist or Serve for the PS2.

I really can’t hate The Ring: Terror’s Realm, back in 2001, I found the game at a mall in a retro video game store that sold all kinds of games for cheap prices.
I had a Dreamcast and I had just beat Resident Evil Code Veronica for it, so I really didn’t have another cool and fun horror game to play, so I purchased Ring and gave it a chance.
Besides RE Code Veronica, I had all three versions of Street Fighter III and Capcom vs. SNK on Dreamcast.
Adding The Ring to my collection of Dreamcast games felt like a win in my opinion.
Even though the game was very silly, I actually had a lot of fun playing through it, the game also created some very good memories for me while playing it, it took a good while to try and figure out how to beat, but I actually figured out how to beat the game, and it felt like the stakes were really high at the end, it made things really cool in my opinion.
I still love the game, and feel bad that it gets a lot of hate.
Another cool Dreamcast survival horror game that I managed to find and play was “Carrier”.
I also had a lot of fun playing through “Carrier” too as well, it’s sadly another game that no one talks about and is sadly forgotten, yet I still remember the game and love it.
I was only able to find Carrier at a video store to rent, and never found it to buy, so I ended up finding and buying another awesome survival horror game that was on Dreamcast, and that game was “Alone in the Dark The New Nightmare”.

It's underrated. Everyone dumps on it because the story is kind of schlocky and just kind of happens, but it has like 4 full story modes. It takes multiple playthroughs to unlock other playable characters. Like all the characters in the opening cutscene are in these alternate playthroughs and the curing people from the vampirism is required for one of these playthroughs.

18:20 So the Smurfs -- aka Les Schtroomphs (spelling may be off; I can't check other tabs at the moment so I'm going from memory) -- were HUGE in the French-speaking world long before they got anglicized. They were sold in those swank big graphic comics like Tintin or Asterisk & Obelisk. The original run is quite arty. I remember them from my bilingual Canadian French-English education. Our libraries had them all. It's probably not surprising a French mega-corp owned the rights at some point to Smurfs in games, given they're a massive Francophone property.

I remember being so disappointed in Countdown: Vampire. Back in the day it had some impressive looking previews in old game magazines. It was originally going to have 4 playable characters and branching storylines. But I guess they couldn't figure out the game so they cut it down to just one playable character. Those other characters in the ending were shown in previews as playable characters.
