2017 Nissan Rogue Sport (Qashqai) First Drive Review in 4K UHD!

  • Looking for a smaller Rogue? This is it. The Rogue Sport (aka the Nissan Qashqai in Canada and Europe) is the smaller cousin of the three-row capable Rogue. Basically what Nissan did is shrink the Rogue, lower the ride height, swap in a different engine and shrink the price tag accordingly. Then they stiffened the suspension to justify the "Sport" logo and voila!

    Thanks for the great review. Very accurate. I own this same vehicle, black with black interior but 2018.5 model. Nice vehicle but sorely underpowered. Nimble through a major city and easy to fit in parking spaces of all sorts. I put dealership installed Continental Extreme Contact DWS Ultra High Performance tires on and it improved the handling much better than the stock Bridgestone Ecopias, especially in the rain. Should have 175 HP and 2017, 2018 SL Premium package should have automatic dimming rear view mirror, electric passenger seat, Bose stereo, driver seat memory. These features are now added to the 2020 model. This is no cheap vehicle, fully loaded with some dealer added items like mud guards, rear bumper protector and door & hood film guards the vehicle is around $35K. I did have a Hyundai Tucson rental for 2 weeks and I liked the Rogue-sport much better overall. I now think I should have gotten a fully loaded CRV or larger Rogue for the money.

    I'll keep my 2013 rouge special edition awd. It's been good here in the N.C. mountains . Handles the curves very well and with better ground clearance than the new rouges , it handles the trails as well as the snow. Stock continental 4x4 tires let go at 20000 miles. Put Goodyear SR-A tires on it and improved it across the board.

    One more thing to consider too, Alex...I have a 50 min. commute each morning and evening for work, and most is not on highway so gas mileage is very important. This is also leading me toward the HONDA HR-V. Ok. I believe that's all ☺️

    This will sell well, but Nissan will be in no rush to add power. You want more performance, Nissan will want more money, and will direct you to the Nissan Rogue. This has similar power and performance to the Honda HRV or Toyota CHR. Looks like a good buy under $25k

    CD player - how retro. Aside from that the Qashqai is an excellent vehicle, having been exposed to them in the UK over the years I think it will be an excellent addition to the Nissan Canada lineup. I'd cross shop it against other compact SUVs.

    Engine is underpowered and cabin gets pretty loud when you're accelerating (not as refined as the Honda CVT). They should have used the engine from Nissan SR Turbo or the Juke. Great review as always Alex....When are you doing 2017 Mazda CX-5?

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop 7 років тому +1

      I would believe in a 150-160bhp engine for the Rogue Sport / US-spec Qashqai (which they don't have nowadays), the Juke's T-1.6L, which seems to work best with the CVT, rather than the 6-speed manual would work as a power option, but it's slighly too thirsty and expensive to work as base engine (the regular US-spec Rogue works with a NA-2.5L on almost similar output numbers to the Juke's, but more reliably and with better fuel compsumption.

    • @LarryBirrd
      @LarryBirrd 7 років тому

      I agree. Hopefully they reconsider to put the 1.6T on the next gen. That would make more fun to drive. But who knows, they may come up with a Nismo version.

    Hi Alex,
    I'm in the market for vehicle. I have owned Nissan Sentra for over 20 years and am looking for this style. It sits higher and would provide more cargo room for my 1 medium and 1small size dogs. I do not want to have to put back seats down to allow enough room for them ( defeats purpose), and I want to keep rest of vehicle free from dog hair, etc. I also want the sunroof package, but Nissan does not offer at mid-level trim and SL is too pricey for me. Therefore, I'm stuck between this Rogue Sport and Honda HR-V. In looking at mid-level trim for both makes, it seems that Honda has more to offer and is more reasonably priced.

    So in the US Nissan wants this car to appeal to some younger audience by being more sporty while having old 1.8l engine mated with dreadful CVT instead of 1.6 turbo and 6-speed manual?

    • @malikbrother8022
      @malikbrother8022 7 років тому

      +sic22l
      It is 2L engine. 1.8L would have netted better fuel economy judging by Sentra i think but 2L might be different story hence poor fuel economy.
      It could be argued that the crossover is still too big for 2L under-powered engine which means the pressure on the engine will result burning the fuel twice in comparison to 2.5L or 1.6L Turbo engine.

    • @FitFatFit

      Hey Taylor,
      I'm in the same boat as you. Honestly I test drove the Rogue and Rogue Sport yesterday and I there isn't a huge difference but I would prefer the Rogue over there sport. My best advise is to try and test drive both the cars and see what you like. I also drove the 2018 chevy equinox ( a lot more $$$) swell as the kia Sportage and I thought I would love the sportage but it's not worth the bang for the buck to me. Honestly it's all personal reference, just keep in mind that this is there first year making the Sport so little things may go wrong and of course they would have to fix it (They're learning alongside with you.) The Sport does seem great for someone who doesn't have kiddos yet though because the truck is pretty small and it would be hard to fit a jogger in there. Those are just my thoughts but you really won't know until sit in the drive and drive it. i would recommend test drive a hand full of relates cars and then make your choice after that. Just bring someone with you that isn't scared to tell the dealership "I'm not buying today" because they're sometimes pushy and will trick you into running your credit or "Taking it out to lunch" is another punch line that they catch you on because as soon as you drive off that parking lot they have you in their vehicle. Good Luck!

      The Uk version is really popular, every other car seems to be a Qashqai ( rogue sport) so popular the are made in the Uk. My wife has one with a 1.6 turbo petrol and it’s pretty quick, handles well, looks good and so far very reliable. Ignore the haters who hate everything unless it’s got a massive v8 and does 0-60 in the blink of an eye.

    • @Jabber-ig3iw
      @Jabber-ig3iw 6 років тому

      Z S did you buy it without driving it, or seeing it? What engine do you have that has ‘slow response on acceleration ‘ whatever that means, were you expecting GTR acceleration? My wife has one with the 163bhp 1.6turbo petrol we get in Europe and whilst it’s no dragster it’s perfectly quick enough although you do need to make sure you are in the correct gear at low speeds otherwise you do suffer from the usual lag associated with turbocharged small capacity petrol engines. Whilst not outdated I agree it’s getting on a bit as this design is 3 years old Now.

    So this is the mini, slower and cheaper version of the Rogue?
    Why would Nissan called it "Rogue Sport"? There is not much about being sportier than the regular Rogue and seems a little misleading. I'm guessing Nissan was in a hurry to compete with the rest of the subcompact bunch (think HR-V, CH-R) and had to come up with a butchered version of its best selling CUV. I don't think this will work well for Nissan. The car looks too much like the regular Rogue and its design is not a game changer.
    Why not redesign the Juke? Or even bring a lifted version of the Pulsar in the US? Seems a little rushed and lazy from Nissan...

    • @Jabber-ig3iw
      @Jabber-ig3iw 6 років тому

      Heu Thao in a hurry? It’s been on sale in Europe since 2007, you are getting the pre facelift mk2 just as Europe gets the facelift mk2, calling it the rogue sport is I agree a daft name, my wife has the fastest version available in Europe with a 163bhp turbo petrol engine which whilst a nice car I’d only describe as vaguely sporty.
      They seem to be marketing it in the states as the sporty version of a proper suv, which it clearly isn’t, in Europe this car replaced a dire 5 door hatchback driven almost exclusively by old people waiting to die. When it launched it was bought by young people with new families and all but invented a new sector in the motor trade, the crossover suv, which didn’t really exist at the time.

    this and the Rogue (normal version?) need updated drivetrains horribly. Add to that 1990s infotainment system, just animal offerings by Nissan per usual. They will put a ton of cash on the hood of these and that's the only reason they would sell. I would even recommend the Mitsubishi SUV over this simply because that does have applecarplay, etc. Nissan is a joke.

      Kai Liu it's a foot shorter. there has been times I've parked my car in such a space that there is 2 inches of room in the front and 1 in the back. I've had 2 make turn the wheel about 15 time just 2 get it in. if my car was a foot shorter it would've been a piece of cake!

      Nissan Qashqai will be available soon. Rogue is compact crossover. Nissan Qashqai is subcompact crossover. Check out Nissan to query more about Nissan Qashqai since AlexonAuto is only privy to US Nissan Model; Rogue Sport.

      The Qashqai is now available in Canada. I was looking at one the other day at our local Nissan dealer here on the east coast of Canada in NL.

    Nissan, develop a smaller suv, not shortening the current model. In other words, don't try to save money but rather spend $ to create a smaller & better vehicle.

      smurf131cr A sports car by definition is something that is engaging to drive, there is a reason why Mazda miata is such a loved car. Granted this fails on multiple points but there is more to a car than just its engine.

    • @weedmastersr
      @weedmastersr 7 років тому +14

      Sport is not about power. A Hellcat has 707 HP but I wouldn't call it sport. It's muscle. But a Miata is sport even at 150 HP.

    • @syxepop
      @syxepop 7 років тому

      You may not like CVTs at all, but I don't mind if they're reliable and are installed in a < 200 bhp engine. Above that it can be a dealbreaker against conventional or most dual-clutch auto trannies.
      And knowing Nissan enough unfortunately they won't upgrade the engine (maybe to CX-3 or base CX-5 levels) early enough in the cycle to make a difference....
