The mantis shrimp is armed with the most sophisticated vision of any predator on Earth. What are your thoughts on this amazing creature?
It's beautiful and amazing at once, seems like it's been here for a loong long time

Considering that this is the inside the water, it's mind boggling how fast this guy can strike.
i slowed this video down to .25% playback speed and still couldnt catch the frames between when it it's claws are relaxed and when it strikes the crab. It moves faster than the camera can film
*DBZ punch sound effect*
@@AlexPalumboG Not surprising since the acceleration is comparable to .22 caliber bullet shot out of a gun.
Even outside if the water that would be insanely fast
That begs the question of the difference between the strike outside of water. Is it faster or slower? More or less damage

it's a peacock
What blew my mind most about this was 2-fold -- he can crack his way through a seashell as effortlessly as a nutcracker opening up the shell of a walnut, and he's temporarily exposed to a temperature of 10,000 degrees F, which is the sun's surface temperature. The natural world is filled with wonder and awe!

Let's take a moment to think about the sound designer, who used the looney toons dash sound in a nat geo documentary.

I mean, they're owned by Disney now, so it only seems natural that they'd use cartoon sound effects.
But looney tunes is owned by warner, not Disney
I thought this, too! Haha!
I can only imagine the undiscovered creatures that live way below our oceans that can survive in harsh environments and crushing depths.
Look at the Volcano Snail
The way the water around the fist *boils* as they punch would be like if we could actually punch so hard our *fists catch fire.* Nature is so fascinating.
No it is called cavitation an has to do with pressure and boiling point. It is not that hot.
yes of course because 8500 degrees is not that hot
“He’s actually neither a shrimp nor a mantis.”

“The temperature of the surface of the sun”
Imagine your just swimming around and all of a sudden you get hit with the temperature of the surface of the sun..
Imagine being a mantis shrimp and just turning around and seeing this-🤿📸
Never forget that they're doing UNDER WATER - which significantly slows down their already devastating blow. Imagine they're doing this in the air!
Might tear their bodies apart from the force. They've evolved for water, not air.
Air has some resistance in it as well. Not sure how much dense it is versus a body of water though. I guess that will depend on the altitude where the action is taking place. Just thinking out loud.
@@mohamedkaba6934 The viscosity of water is about 50x greater than air at the surface of the Earth. It is much harder to move around in water (for a human at least!) but obviously these animals have evolved to live in the water. Anyway, apparently the mantis shrimp can slow its punch speed down when out of water. Clever things!
That would make it less powerful though, Since it essentially boils the water around its fist, and basically cooks its prey. if it was on the surface, this would not be able to happen.
@@scpfoundation4609 you think speed only boil water? with enough speed it is possible to create fire by simply accelerating the oxygen particles in the air, of course it would dissipate a lot more faster too, but I'm pretty sure this thing can do a "hot" punch in the surface although his body would suffer as it is not adapted to use full power oit of water, inside water it helps absorbing the recoil and backlash from such a movement.
“Despite only being 6 inches long” wait till she hears this one
