It is highly recommended to continue some form of regular physical activity or exercise as a lifelong habit. This will help maintain the longevity of your knee replacement and overall health. This does not necessarily mean doing your exercises from physical therapy forever but just some form of regular physical activity.
This sounds good, Im 7 weeks out from knee replacement, all good other than going up and down stairs normal, pain at the top of my knee, about at the knee cap when attempting this, will this exercise help the pain or make it worse?
In the short term it may make the pain worse. It is the flexed position with the weight through the leg that puts a lot of stress through the front of the knee. In the long term this isn’t damaging the knee but you want to find a happy medium of building strength while not causing a flare up of symptoms. I would start with maybe one set at first and then progress the volume and intensity as you and the knee tolerate… a little bit of increased pain is ok but increased pain that is significant and/or lasts into the next day means you probably overdid it and want to ease of some and then slowly build back up.
Whenever you feel comfortable trying these. I recommend when first trying have someone to guard you such as a physical therapist and have something to hold onto such as a railing or wall.
You should be able to perform the stairs in time as you heal and recover from your surgery. Follow the instructions of your surgeon and physiotherapist. Best wishes!
Each person is different. For a lot of people this feeling goes away or diminishes significantly over time, but for some this feeling can remain forever.
Excellent, thanks.
You’re very welcome!
Do we need to exercise for life long, after tkr
