    In this DCS: AH-64D video, it’s time to talk about the AGM-114 Hellfire II missile. There are two primary versions of the Hellfire II: The Semi-Active Laser-homing version and the active radar-homing. The radar-homing version will come later during early access when we add the Fire Control Radar, or FCR. At release, we will include the AGM-114K laser version, commonly called the “SAL”.
    Each AGM-114K weighs 100 pounds, has a tandem, shape-charged High-Explosive Anti-Tank warhead, with a theoretical range of 11 km, but more practically around 8 km. The motor burns for only 2.5 seconds, but it can reach Mach 1.4. Up to four can be loaded on each of the four possible Hellfire launchers.
    Although it would be a heavy bird, you could carry up to 16 Hellfires into combat.
    There are two principal ways to fire a Hellfire, autonomous mode in which your aircraft is laser-designating the target and Remote mode in which another aircraft or ground asset is laser designating the target for you on a matching laser frequency. We’ll first discuss autonomous mode that would be handled from the front, CP/G seat.

      I was avionics on F18s for years, when the module dropped and I found they had a lot of the ibits and pbits I was over the moon. Putting on the VR and just looking around while sitting on the hardstand, I got goose bumps. Just need to find somewhere that sells hyd-oil and avtur scented candles!

    In a way, I'm glad George is like Petrovich so it'll be an easy transition. But I'm also a little disappointed he's not like Jester. Jester feels like he's part of the crew, and feels a lot more "human" than Petrovich/George.

    Can anyone recommend a good AH-64 flight tutorial? I've been flying Enemy Engaged Commanche vs Hokum in the AH64, and I've been having problems managing speed and collective in forward flight, as well as managing hover flight and altitude. Clearly I need more information.

      I understand the very basics, but staying balanced on top of my column of air that is coming from the rotors feels way more difficult that I'm expecting. Getting in motion is easy, slowing to a stop or hovering is very difficult.

    Hellfires are interesting, I'm sure this is in the manual or at least easily available information, but I did find myself wondering if I could have the advantage of Over The Horizon capabilities if I had someone on the ground able to laze a target for me. I guess it would depend on the available terrain features and ultimate distance to the target but I'm sure it's possible.
    I really can't wait to fly this thing. I haven't been this excited for the release of something since GTA 5 was released in '13.

    Hi Wags! Is it possible to use the TADS/FLIR as an aiming device for the gun and missiles in the pilot seat? I mean, be autonomous to engage without the AI aid. I read a comment where you say you can do everything in the back seat and I was wondering if it applies to that. Keep the good work!

    One thing I've always wondered, with lazing targets, I assume in real life you both need to be relatively on the same side of the target for the seeker to see it, or can it just follow the beam itself into the target?
    Like if my wingman is on the south side of a target and lazing the target for me, and I fire from the North side of the target, would the missile still track?

    • @sloppydog4831
      @sloppydog4831 2 роки тому +1

      Good question...However I believe that is valid if you do a LOAL High shot. It should work because the missile seeker head is looking for the laser from above and the wingman would be illuminating it from above. However if the wingman altitude is a bit low, I believe the missile seeker head would have problems finding the target, since most of the illumination by the wingman would be on the side of the target, not above.

    • @weasel4-1
      @weasel4-1 2 роки тому +2

      My guess is that the seeker head needs to be able to see the reflection of the laser on the target. If your buddy is lazing the other side of a building so that the reflection is not visible on your side, then the missile won't see it either and won't track.

    • @123TheCloop

      If it works like is does in the JF using the WMD pod lazing function then you dont need to be relative. I think all lazing does it paint a coordinate back to the targeting computer or pod and them transfer that to relevant parties using the same lazing code on there targeting pods. no idea if thats accurate but you deffo dont need to be relative. however with this getting the K variants of the Hellfires it should have LOAL functionality so even if you did lose the target it should find a new target (might not be what you want) but it does give options if I suppose they have modelled the laser needing to be relative for it to be picked up

    • @ImpendingJoker
      @ImpendingJoker 2 роки тому +1

      @@carleb Then you need to study up some. The FCR is a very new addition to the Apache. Most of the life of the helicopter has been with out it. Also, not all AH-64Ds have the FCR installed only the motherships have those, and the other usually do not have them. As the mothership scans for targets, and sends all that information to the daughters through a secure datalink, and then tell which daughter to engage which targets.

    • @Raptor_9
      @Raptor_9 2 роки тому +2

      @@ImpendingJoker "Very new"? It's had the FCR for over half it's life, since the first AH-64D unit was fielded in 1997, 25 years ago. Like he said, he's only seen his military's Apaches with it since the UK have one for each of their AH-64s. Other countries are the opposite, like the Netherlands, that had no FCRs for their AH-64Ds.
