If you're going to set a bait out there and leave your rod, do yourself a huge favor: use a circle hook, anchor the bait to the bottom with a big weight, and let the reel freespool. The fish will hook itself on the circle hook by pulling against the sinker, but it wont take your rod away because the spool is open. No lost rods, no lost fish, and no swallowed hooks.
