The thing is, in the show Kirk was constantly being possessed or otherwise put into altered states of consciousness by aliens and weird space phenomenons. So he was supposed to seem off the wall in those cases. And he certainly does. On one hand, yeah, those moments are freakin hilarious. But on the other hand, here's Shatner playing a character that's being telepathically tortured in the form of behaving like a pony. That's a lot to ask of an actor. And he's going all in. No shame, no hesitation, just energy and passion to do his best. Bold generosity. I love Shatner and I love Kirk. LLAP
The pony episode you mention, "Plato's Children" (?) is a favorite of mine, at least in its concept. If the pony part and the very silly dance were replaced by something less frivolous the episode would have been far better. Many STOS episodes were engaging in concept but came off poorly due to too much silliness. "Way To Eden" and "Mirror, Mirror" with the preposterous make them vanish weapon are examples.
Super comment! These scenes are taken out of context and they were shot fast and usually in one take to make it on air the next week. He made the show go 3 years and would have made 4 if the studio supported them and kept them on a decent to e slot. 10pm on a Friday night was the death of star trek..,
Shatner is such an underrated actor! Really he created the ultimate icon James T Kirk! Seriously there would be no 50th anniversary of Star Trek without him. The entire 50 year saga rests on his shoulders.
It is easily argued that William Shatner is the King of over acting, but... he is still my favorite Star Trek Captain and I liked the original series best.
He didn't over act, not at all. He's much better thsn that stiupid and cheesy next generation stuff and ole captsin chrome dome there flipping his hands over his head and saying engage make it so. Take Kirk any day any time over chrome dome, that's for sure.
That was just his character. Watch his earlier work. Then watch him again in Trek. Watch how he uses his shoulders and back, his eyes, his mouth and the muscles in his face. He's actually a brilliant actor.
@@quashiesuzanne no he sure didn't. He was portaying a character. If you watch his earlier roles, he acts appropriately for those parts. He's a classically trained actor who performed in Shakespeare's plays at the Stratford Festival. He performed on Broadway and in numerous TV and movie roles. He's an awesome actor who is dedicated to his craft. Not to mention he's hot af. 😊
Shatner's performances are always on-point! Everyone in this show does such a stellar job of making you believe that what you're seeing is real, and Shatner is one of the very best.
He was really good in Boston Legal, he got Emmys and a golden globe... I think. at this stage he was still struggling between stage and TV which require different acting methods.
Cryptonymicus - If you look at the actors from many of these shows from the late fifties to late sixties, I think the acting advice was small screen, act big. Shatner, of course, was in a ridiculous league all his own!
Bill Anthony In fairness, I've known a couple of people in ordinary life who talk or "act" just like Shatner and none of them are actors. Most are of Italian heritage, lol.
William shatter made Star Trek so exciting! He over acted and we loved it ! We never seen anything like it and still haven’t today! William is a legend!
He definitely took the acting right out to the edge. Spock might even quizzically say... 'Fascinating'. ...or perhaps "tangible proof that I must keep my human half in check" (:
Some of those scenes were pretty funny, especially when he was talking cash shit to Spock, just asking to get his ass kicked. Classic Capt Kirk scenes.
Capt. Kirk: All right, you mutinous, disloyal, computerized half-breed. We'll see about you deserting my ship. Spock: The term "half-breed" is somewhat applicable, but "computerized" is inaccurate. A machine can be computerized, not a man. Capt. Kirk: What makes you think you're a man? You're an overgrown jackrabbit. An elf with a hyperactive thyroid. Spock: Jim, I don't understand... Capt. Kirk: Of course you don't understand. You don't have the brains to understand. All you have is printed circuits. Spock: Captain, if you will excuse me. [Tries to activate the transporter] Capt. Kirk: [blocks Spock's way and interupts] What can you expect from a simpering, devil-eared freak whose father was a computer and his mother an encyclopedia. Spock: My mother was a teacher. My father an ambassador. Capt. Kirk: Your father was a computer, like his son. An ambassador from a planet of traitors. The Vulcan never lived who had an ounce of integrity... Spock: Captain, please don't... Capt. Kirk: You're a traitor from a race of traitors. Disloyal to the core. Rotten! Like the rest of your subhuman race. And you've got the GALL... to make love to that girl! Spock: That's enough. Capt. Kirk: Does she know what she's getting, Spock? A carcass full of memory banks who should be squatting on a mushroom? Instead of passing himself off as a man? You belong in the circus, Spock, not a starship. Right next to the dog face boy!
For me, the Trek dream team is Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu and Nurse Chapel. All of them put great commitment into their roles, none more than William Shatner.
Ham & Cheesey fondue recipe: 3 heaping cups of kirk :-P 1/2 cup spock 1/4 cup bones 2 TB scotty & chekov & sulu & uhura season to taste w/remaining enterprise crew
You would have to try to be a worse actor then Shatner though, and also just captain Kirks entire character is ridiculous. Patrick Stewart, as Picard was a wonderful and lovable character with a relatable personality and motif. Even Avery Brooks, as Sisko was a splendid actor, and with a character that was amazingly well written.
Luke Watson that's kinda my point. I think Patrick Stewart would have made Kirk much better. Brooks too, I'd imagine. Heck, Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) could probably do a good Kirk!
Kirk made the show....I love his acting. It is so charming and fun. But you are missing one of the most Shatner type moments.....on the episode "Metamorphosis" he gives a speech to the cloud/thing about love and it is probably the origin of all the Shatner acting stereotypes.
Hmm showing the dual side of Kirk's personality is one thing but there was so much more to work with. The humour of City on the Edge, the brilliance in Balance of Terror and the harsh realities of war in A Taste of Armageddon. Just to name a couple.
I wish we could have more acting like that first scene in serious movies today! I mean, that is a perfect representation of what panic feels like internally for me at least. What unfortunately puts it over the top is the music. Can we have more styles of acting, please?
So there was more than moon control- maybe an orb right here, embedded on earth sent by aliens- one explanation for.human behavior- thank you for this show
He was gorgeous wasn't he and yes he can act that is very often the case of beautiful actors they couldn't possibly act as well was the attitude, he won two golden globes twice in a row for guess what his ACTING! so get off his case people who diss him.
I just came across this site and wow, You really nailed all of these scenes.... Thank you... And Captain James T Kirk was and is my only Captain of the Enterprise..
holy SHIT! i never watched star trek but i did watch 3rd rock from the sun and in some episodes william shatner was in it so that was the first i ever saw of him and looking back at star trek compared to 3rd rock from the sun i had NO clue william shatner use to look so different holy cant believe the difference maybe it was plastic surgery gone bad? or just aging im confused !

NAILED IT. I could not agree more!!
I said give me the brandy!!!
In the 1960s, William Shatner WAS your special effects budget.
I love the open mouth kissing the alien then punching her in the face, hilarious.
Watching this without context.... I can't stop laughing
Shatner is such an underrated actor! Really he created the ultimate icon James T Kirk! Seriously there would be no 50th anniversary of Star Trek without him. The entire 50 year saga rests on his shoulders.
I agree,He definitely paved the way!!!🎩
Maureen, how right you are!
Honestly cant understand why people rag on Shatner. He made the show in my view.
Scott Matthew , they probably rag on him because of jealously.
i love the show but he's freaking hilarious. his overacting is just damn funny.
Robbie Hart , in some cases I think he meant it to be.
Me too
Complete and utter jealousy of his beautiful face and his charisma.end of..

William Shatner is my hero. I honestly can't think of any other actor that is so brilliantly terrible yet incredibly compelling.
He should've been in theater -- where acting has to be large.
He was really good in Boston Legal, he got Emmys and a golden globe... I think. at this stage he was still struggling between stage and TV which require different acting methods.

Is his acting Shatner impersonating Jim Carrey playing Shatner?
You NEED a Shakespearean actor to play the Captain of the Enterprise.
You just do.
William shatter made Star Trek so exciting! He over acted and we loved it ! We never seen anything like it and still haven’t today! William is a legend!
Hey, it was the 1960’s , Kirk can act as silly as he wants.
The fart moments were the best! 😝
He definitely took the acting right out to the edge.

He is a legend wether you like it or not.
always be yourself, unless you are Captain Kirk then be Captain Kirk.
rishi arora what?
rishi arora you said man!
im captian kirk! *slams books onto the floor* IM CAPTAIN KIRK! *SMASHES THE COMPUTER MONITOR* IIIIMMMM CAAAAAPPPTTTTAAAAIIIIIN KIIIIIIIRRRRRRK!

Captain Kirk is so awesome.
And very sexy
no one is as yummy as Kirk especially in the first 2 seasoned !
Only The Triune GOD Is So Awesome.
Such a good actor and a Shakespearean actor at that. Give him an impossible part and he pulled it off every time.
he always gave 100% to everything
You should have added the scene from _Mirror, Mirror_ where Kirk's evil counterpart is in the brig trying to bribe Spock in the normal universe.
Spock to Kirk: "Captain. You ate a ham sandwich. Have you become a cannibal?"
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy made Trek what it was, is and continues to be. Shatner was the best looking man alive, in TOS.
with a lot a help 😀

I almost pissed in my pants laughing, I forgot about that one,,, lol
🤣🤣🤣
12:13 - get your baked beans and popcorn ready if you want to lose it.

William Shatner IS Captain Kirk. Captain Kirk is the GOAT.

I actually liked the original better than next generation.
Denver Hornsby Jr. so did I. No comparison. I tried to watch other series that followed but never could get into them.
Binga Pajama and what do you serve it with?
Prolly with a side of KHAAAAAAAAAAAN
@@DenverHornsbyJr Agreed, The Original Star Trek series RULES MAN! Hate that stupid and ridicules cheesy next generation stuff, it sucks.
I always loved that sidestep Boulder dodge he does in Arena..LMAO ! Freaking Gutbuster!

😂
I hope Shatner was paid well when he had to do that embarrassing "horse" routine.
Ikr..😂
Michael Myers wears a pale version of the Kirk mask.
Inside out
You're god damn right
The winner is at ... 8:15-8:26 🤣. That would not fly today.
Captain kirk is best captain
mmm, this is where you learn about Picard
Luke Watson that's not fair. Patrick Stewart is a way better actor.
You would have to try to be a worse actor then Shatner though, and also just captain Kirks entire character is ridiculous.

I dont care what anyone says William Shatner was the best Kirk
Can you imagine watching any other Star Trek other than TOS?
Reversed
😉absolutely not
Yes, TNG which is just as good.
Not for the first 18 years of my life, I couldn't! (Was born in the autumn of 1969, just after ST: TOS was canceled.)
way ahead of its time

I thought i was having a bad day.
carcass full of memory banks speech... best ever
Half of this was enemy within
8:22 lol But seriously, I think he is a great actor.
Watch this high at your own risk people 🤣
Kirk insane moments
William Shatner is the only Captain of Star Trek period, he was not boring, handsome and a great actor.
When somewhat similar stunt doubles really wasn't a consideration....but it just adds to this iconic series!! @9:03
You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
that was actually a great episode.

I get Picard being an awful captain, but Decker, Spock, and April were great captains. Pike was ok, definitely better than Picard.
I'm attempting not to piss myself or wake up my family from laughter
Still the best crew to ever staff a starship!
Truly an inspiration to us all
Shatern didn't over act, he was doing Shakespeare, what we are not familiar with and he did it very well. If not we would not love him today.
That episode with two Kirks, what the hell is going on there!!!!....lol
Kirk was split into a good and bad version. Transporter accodent.
The last video frame was the best! It reminded me a Morse code😂

Thomas Cahyuti And 8:00, which proves that Captain Kirk only has eyes on Spock.

Anona Mouse it's called Shacting.
Little bit of A, Little bit of B. Wouldn't be Star Trek otherwise.
Shatner is absolutely brilliant as Captain Kirk. Any other opinion is just incorrect, snobbish schmuckery.
