Great video as always! I was dying laughing. I think your point is valid. Personally I think Oshi No Ko suffers from a weekly release, the first episode being shocklying too good for this type of format. Once all the episodes are out and bingeable I think it might fix a lot of problems people have with the show. But like you said they might have been able to solve this by making this a movies series instead of television one.
I think it's inherent problem is a lack of direction, promising one thing, but ultimately leading with something else, in this case being information about the entertainment industry, which makes something that was already kind of w/e premise wise, annoying and boring because it's not focused on the initial premise it promised. Binging it would probably alleviate some issues, but it would do so in the same way as episode 1, wherein it's presented in movie format so that you don't have time to think about how dumb some of it was. Most people wouldn't have liked it as much if it were three normal episodes instead. Movie style, however, I think would've led to a so-so experience on a more critical level, but a much more fun one overall.
4:44 "this is a show about solving a mystery"..... well yes and no, solving a mystery doesnt happen overnight too theres obviously many steps and slow progression towards that mystery in the first place that will take place throughout the show. but even with only 8 episodes out right now its already showed that it is a clear heavy hitter with the route that its taken, and the mystery is not the core of the show, it never was. Clearly this video was also made before episodes 6 & 7 so would like to know your thoughts now after those events (and episode 8 as well). Wasted potential is an extreme disservice to what its showed so far, even been the top anime of the week every single week when its had an episode all season long too lol.
Interesting take. Makes me wonder what the appeal of this one is for different people. Personally I thought the entertainment industry commentary was the most interesting thing about the show from the jump, and love how it tends to give a voice to both the arguments for and against it even while showing brutal realities. I got a little catching up to do though so maybe I'm being presumptuous... 👀 Also they really did go hard on Ai's cleavage in that one scene huh lmao
Entertainment industry knowledge, especially as basic as this show presents it, isn't enough to carry the show on its own. That's not to say it doesn't work, it's just that, a majority of the time, it's just kind of crammed in there and serves no purpose. If the show had put it at the forefront and presented it as "this is like Gi(a)rlish Number and Shirobako, where we're gonna teach you about stuff in an entertaining way" it'd be fine, but that doesn't make for a chart topping show, so the author opted instead to put the murder-mystery at the forefront, but then doesn't do anything with a majority of the time in favor of introducing more waifus and talking more about the industry. I feel like I made it clear in the video -- though maybe I didn't based on other comments I've gotten? -- that I was more-so disappointed with it than anything, and that stemmed from the way it was framed from jump. Also, yes they did, but I'm not complaining. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I can see the point you're talking about. Yeah, the first episode was STUNNINGLY good for a literal first episode, a 90 MINUTE LONG ONE. Anyway, when the next few came out, I think many lost interest since a lot of story lines on each episode isn't related to the main storyline in the first episode. Just to clarify: this anime is NOT a murderer mystery, but Ai's death case will be solved throughout the course. It is also DEFINITELY NOT a slice-of-life anime since this one has dark themes portraying what's happening in the entertainment industry irl. This story is just not about Ai and her kids, but a lot of others as well. And these characters are adaptations of people that went through the same experience irl. The episodes will be also VERY slow paced, in my personal opinion, check out the manga. It will also be slow paced, but I guarantee you it will be worth it. I binged all 116 chapters and waiting for the next ones to come out. And uh, yes, you can nut to Ai since she is super duper adorable.
Ep 6 was a lot better on the production side of things, muck akin to episode 1, but it still suffered on the story front and didn't really change anything I said, especially when it feels the most copy-pasted because it's p. much beat for beat like the real case, except it excluded key factors from that case and made it seem a bit silly in regards to the lead up of what happens with Akane. Like most other things, it's good in a vacuum, but as part of the OnK story as a whole, it doesn't really need to be there. If the author had framed it as entrainment industry edutainment show, then it'd be fine, but he didn't. That type of thing has always strictly been in the background whilst he put other beats -- like the murder mystery -- up front, so to now reverse that order is jarring and it feels as if the story is pathless and is just doing w/e week by week. Again, though, the anime team killed it with the visuals, sound design, and voice work on 6.
He really shouldn't have put it at the forefront then. The primary issue with the show is that it makes it clear it's going to be one thing, but then turns around and does something else that it was doing in the background previously, effectively reversing the order and making it jarring and haphazard. That's not to mention that most of the "education" on the industry is both not that fun to watch -- because it's usually just kind of thrown in randomly as part of whoever the new waifu's plot is -- or it's just common knowledge. Like I said in the video, it can be done well, and they've done it a few times, but it's just not something that can carry a story.
This put what i've been feeling into words pretty well. The first episode movie was cool, but the other episodes haven't felt as high quality. Even purely from a writing standpoint it's fallen off imo. Hoping we're just in a build-up phase; I like the visuals too much to stop watching
Entertainment industry commentary with background murder mistery is focused more on entertainment industry than on the murder mystery. Who would have thought? Seriously, your expectations are your own problem, even first episode was far more focused on the industry and what it does to the people inside than on plot progression.
@@To-To I did like how you structured your opinion for your criticism section, but I'm too used to seeing yourself on screen doing skits for jokes and other stuff. That's just me though, I can get used to it over time.
@@ahri-theninetailedfox3535 I noticed that me being on screen -- and it's not for a joke -- caused retention to dip, so I just kept to it being for skits/jokes, there just weren't many in this video. The only thing I really changed is how I intermix the criticism. I didn't have a lot of nice things to say outside of episode 1, so I couldn't do what I normally do where I criticize it and then say something nice, so instead I spent half the video talking about the good points primarily -- intermixing some criticism -- and the second half talking about why it disappointed me, but letting it be know that the things it did aren't bad in a vacuum, just for how the series portrayed itself. I noticed that, since I speak so matter of fact-ly because, as another viewer put it, I'm very neutral -- since I just tell you why it's good and why it's bad with analysis -- more causal viewers see that as hate and clicking off, but they're ultimately the larger audience that my videos will reach when they get more views. To reach that audience, I needed to make sure I wasn't saying or making to "negative" a joke or criticism so that they watch longer and the video gets pushed, so I had a buddy read my script and help with that. I wanted to make sure I reached more casual viewers, but also maintained what makes my videos unique, that being the analysis and jokes, so that's why the video took longer than usual. I'd say that it's not that much different outside of being generally better paced and just having me on screen less. As for what it's at now, when it was first uploaded it was at around 50% retention -- the goal -- with like 200 viewers. It blew up to 1k p. shortly and lowered to, like, 28% retention, but it has been slowly going back up as it gains views -- which isn't something I see often -- and is now at about 33% with 1.4k-something views. I'd say it's doing better than I expected for my first video back in a month, and I've noticed that UA-cam has been trying to push my videos heavily, but there's always something that holds them back in the Retention/AVD, title, and thumbnail department. Sometimes the topic department, too, in a case like Konosuba. That's why I changed up a bit here to try and fix that issue, and I'd say it's doing well and that, if I keep doing it, eventually one of the video will blow up and the others -- since they're structured similarly -- will also get more views as a result. That means I may upload less videos, but I'd still aim for about 2 a week. I don't think every video is gonna take me 10 days like OnK. This only took so long because of a combination of procrastination and trying something new that I wasn't deeply familiar with. I think it's working, personally, but I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on why you think it would put some people off.
