I just got into Gojira. I love fortitude which made me dig further into the catalog. From Mars to Sirius is a behemoth but besides Magma I haven’t listen to the rest of the catalog. Thanks for doing this one Pete.

@@simond1574 Good list, "Ghost of Perdition" would be #5 for me if Opeth was on this list. They are definitely not extreme since 2011. "Below the Lights" would likely just make my top 20 and "Monarchy" is on a longer list closer #40. Insomnium is great, especially "Shadows of the Dying Sun". I need more time with Havukruunu. Vale of Pnath and Orbit Culture are also on my longer list.
@@dtltmtgt yes, shadows is great, but I‘m a sucker for long songs. And Winter‘s Gate is one 40 minute song, so it wins 😁

Another never-listened to band so listened to a bit of From Mars To Sirius. Pretty much enjoyed what I heard. Even the 'death growl' vocals did not bother me as much as they sometimes do. That may be the results of continuing to listen to SoT recommendations. As a geezer, the cleaner vocals are more for me but will definitely listen to this album in full and likely try another one or two. So as always, Pete, thanks for these Ranking The Album shows, Pete. They are great resources and very interesting whether or not there is familiarity with the band.
Awesome ranking episode Mr. Pardo! All great albums IMHO. Tough to rank, but the new one I believe will continue to grow on fans and stand the test of time. Trademark Gojira riffs, pummeling drum fills, and awesome production on this new one highlighting a maturation in melodic, but still crushing song crafting. My ranking is below:

1. L’Enfant Sauvage
Gojira were a band I was very late to the party with. I had always heard of them but only made the effort to check them out with Fortitude last year, I saw the hype surrounding it so felt like I had to jump on. Fortitude blew me away and after that I listened to nothing but them for a week. Easily one of the best and most unique bands of the last 20 years, amazing stuff, I can't believe I had missed so much! My ranking would be:

6) Terra Incognita (originally bottom but upon re-listening today it was better than I remember)
5) Way of All Flesh (great album, just don't return to it as much as the others)
4) Fortitude, which would be ranked higher if it weren't for The Chant, which for me is the only song by this band that outright sucks!
3) Magma (I don't get the people who don't like this album. For me it's an astounding record, every band looking to change up their sound should take notes)

Thanks Pete for this ranking. I heard 'Fortitude' recently because of all the buzz behind it, it's pretty good. I'll be checking out 'From Mars to Sirius' and 'The Way of all Flesh' to see if they do more for me.
Terra Incognita is my most listened to album on spotify. I don't know why, but this record just has me hooked😂

Great list! Was waiting for this one! Not surprised with the top 2 as those two are my favourites too. They were really at their best then and took the metal world by storm. The atmosphere and intensity is off the charts. Mario is one of my favourite drummers of all time and almost plays the leafs in this band, weirdly enough where the guitars and bass provide a backbone.

The way of all flesh (one of my favorite produced metal albums of all time)
The link (i think this album is their most underrated. I love the aura and the strangeness of this record. It's also uncompromisingly heavy in spots)
L'efant sauvauge (great album but a bit too long for me)
Fortitude (love some songs but don't like some of the songs like chant at all)
Magma (it gets slightly monotonous where some songs are quite similar to each other)
Terra incognita (their most raw and inaccessible album. I have tried to get into it several times but just can't)
There are no bad albums, the order can change day to day for me, one of the best Metal bands today imo, but as of TODAY:
1. The Link (As of recent days the one I reach for the most, the Link Alive helped me appreciate it more)

5. Fortitude, too many mellow songs for me. For me one of the disappointments of last year, altough its not bad I hoped something heavyier like from mars to sirius or the way of all flesh.

2. The Way of all Flesh. Man that drumming is one of the best on this album the ending to Yama's Messenger is just incredible.
1. From Mars to Sirius was an easy 1 pick. Like pete mentioned one masterpiece of an album. Haviest matter of the universe probably my favourite track. But all tracks are amazing!

Some albums are so good ill just sit there and listen to the whole thing, and it sounds like one song in the end feeling like ive only been sitting down for 10 minutes , Trivium - Ascendency, Gojira - Fortitude, Chevelle - Vena Sera....
Just started listening to Gojira and if I can ever put down Fortitude, I'll listen to the rest, lol. Lovin' them so far.

So awesome to see a 70s prog guy reviewing a prog death metal band from my era as im 31! Great job! I still say hit ensiferum, norther, wintersun and the mighty Children of Bodom. Since you did Mors princimpium est Pete you will enjoy personally many elements I promise 😂 but hey with this world as crazy at is it is why listen to a millennial when the boomers had most things right from politics to music?
Yep. The top 3 Gojira's...almost impossible to rank those. They are 3 essentials - From Mars To Sirius, L'enfant Sauvage and The Way Of All Flesh.
One of the few Heavy bands I like, “Magma” is still my fav, but the new one is great too.
I love the first two albums more than sauvage and magma and fortitude. Im surprised people like the more mellow stuff over the first two albums.
I bought From Mars to Sirius years ago, probably when it was their newest album, but I wasn't ready for that kind of metal and didn't really give it much of a chance at the time (same with the Mastadon and Between the Buried and Me albums that came out around the same time).
I saw adoration for none live in richmond va with Randy from lamb of god. Only time its ever been played live.
I feel like their debut album never gets enough recognition.
I was going to try to rank them but I give up. L'Enfant Sauvage is my favorite, the rest can switch back and forth. The Link is like practice for the next two. One of my favorite bands.

2 years late, but still. Love Gojira!
Don't listen to them as religiously as I did 2-3 years ago, but still fantastic band, with no real bad albums (just some mediocre ones).
My list:
7) Terra Incognita
I don't really come back to anything, except Love.
Not bad, just weaker in comparison to the rest.
6) The Link
Remembrance and Wisdom Comes are stone cold classics, the rest I couldn't care less.
Don't know if I like Terra's production more, but it sounds cleaner.
5) Magma
This one's pretty good, but has some boring songs that go nowhere and are such a departure from "prog-y", "tech-y" Gojira.
Title track's underrated, Silvera, Only Pain, Stranded & Pray slap. The Shooting Star's a snooze & The Cell's main riff annoys me, idc about he rest.
4) Fortitude
Upon initial release I preferred Magma, since this is just magma 2.0, but injected with some Mastodon & Sepultura production.
Lots of songs have huge potential, but are executed unimpressively. Their first album that sounds like sth they've already done, but better.
Born For One Thing, Into the Storm, Grind, Sphynx & Amazonia are great. New Found & Hold On are meh.
The Chant is sth Gojira doesn't expand on, the rest is just snooze material. Still a decent album.
3) L'Enphant Sauvage
A little bit overrated (I'd still give it an 8/10)? I never truly loved this album, even though I acknowledge some epic writing here. First half is better than the 2nd.
Title track, Explosia, The Axe, Planned Obsolencence, Mouth of Kala slap. Gift of Guilt is too repetitive for me, never got into Born in Winter, either.
2) TWOAF
No bad songs here, just some more bizzare ones. The Art of Dying, Toxic Garbage Island, Ouroboros, Adoration for None, Vacuity are stone cold classics.
The only criticism I have is that it drags a bit (Title track, A Sight to Behold...), but overall great album.

This is fun, and just a good conversation. It’s unfair in a way to rank them, because quite often it’s a mood thing, or just the type of day that determines which album is played. But if forced:

You’re mentioning ‘This Emptiness’, but i thought both this song and ‘My Last creation’ were on some special CD versions?
1. Twoaf - I remember liking this one the least, or at least wasn’t enjoying this Gojira sound, and has now become number one. It’s not a perfect album, which is almost impossible to me, but it nears it. Production on this is next level, ones that comes to mind are Oroborus, the robotic sounding Toxic Garbage Island, Yama’s Messenger, drums on this one, oh man… Adoration for None breakdown, the intro and outro of The Art of Dying all the way to the title track Twoaf. Epic album.
2.L’enfant Sauvage - the first 3 songs are just relentless. Very good sounding album, the drums are off the charts, simply great.
3.From Mars to Sirius - although not a perfect album as many people claim it to be, still some of their best work, Ocean Planet is great, but is actually much much better live. In The Wilderness, THMOTU and To sirius are epic tracks.
4. Terra incognita - brutal album, their heaviest or indeed most death-metal album to date, no bad tracks on this one, Clone, Blow me Away You, Space time and In the Forest are the ones that come to mind
5. Fortitude - some good solid tracks but never actually listen to these ones, tracks that come to mind are Another World that i really didn’t like early on, Grind, The Trails and New Found, the last minute of this song is some of the best Gojira, loved the harmonies with the vocals and guitars in the end. It also features one of my least favourite songs ever wirtten by them, which is ‘Into the Storm’, starts off great and than becomes painfully unlistenable, from the cheesy lyrics to the bad song structure. Really disappointing song.
6. Magma - Silvera, Magma, Pray and the intro of Only pain is what comes to mind, great tracks, although the production could’ve been better on the track ‘Pray’ for instance, drums sounds a bit off.
7. The Link - don’t like the primal sounding production on this one, but the tracks in itself are some of the best actually, especially Live. If these would have had a better production it could have been a top 4 for me.

i also hate the stickers on cd cases. the ones that are really hard to peel off, i soak in goo gone for a couple hours and then i can scrape it off, then take a paper towel with some goo gone to clean off the residue of the sticker. it's a process, but it works.

I'm in the minority when it comes to Fortitude. I was not a fan of that record. I liked certain aspects of it but it bored me most of the time. I gave it quite a few listens but yea. To each their own though I guess if you liked it.

Same here. Don't like the direction that Fortitude is going. Too mellow for my taste. Some songs were good but half of them didn't interest me.
Finally, someone who shares my exact ranking. How Terra Incognita is ranking below Fortitude for so many people is wild to me.
As a die hard gojira fan my first song learned on guitar was technically sic by slipknot but first full song was Deliverance by gojira of course my ranking of the albums 1 is best 7 is worst but it’s gojira so it’s still an amazing album 😂

Very nice, terra incognita does not get the respect it deserves. Weirdly I agree the link is bottom but I still love it as it was the first album i heard in full by them.

I cant pick a favorite. I even like their eps.
Use lighter fluid on the hype stickers, works on anything gummy, records, CDs, blu-ray, star wars figures, comic book outsides
I learned of this band in 2016 from Adunbee she is a female guitar player. I have yet to listen to them.
