Too long and a victim of the CD age. Reason I love KAOS is that it’s 42 minutes long and gets the songs across especially with the dialogue removed version of the album. Amused is too long and parts drag on and the fact that he needed 150 musicians on the album and Roger griped about Gilmour having 15 musicians on Momentary Lapse. The Division Bell was the core lineup of Gilmour/Wright/Mason and Guy Pratt as the core band on the album.

I’ve been big into Waters solo since I was 15, right before the In The Flesh tour. (saw him at Providence Civic Center back in July 2000)
    Ranking:
    1. Amused To Death

    3. ITTLWRW
    4. Radio KAOS

Saw him in 84 in Toronto with Clapton on guitar. Then he came back a few months later with another guitarist. Then saw him a few more times over the years. 5 minutes of 70’s Floyd live would mean more to me than all of Roger’s solo material combined.

I saw both in 1987 and I can say I was just as entertained by both. However, you tell people you saw Pink Floyd and 98% will know the name. Tell people you saw Roger Waters and you get a blank stare. Over time, it warps your perception of the event, IMO.

I saw the Phoenix AZ show in 1984, this had Clapton. Still the best concert of my life. I saw Pink Floyd in about 1994 w/o Waters of course and it didn't measure up to Waters show. PF had a huge stage show, Waters show only had a black backdrop where videos played. The sound and visuals at the Waters show took you to outer space. The Floyd show without Waters I'd put in my top 10, Neil Young is the only artist I've seen that's better than Waters or anyone for that matter live. And I've seen a lot of great shows.

This was a cool episode -- I really appreciate Pete digging into a catalog he's not seriously into and trying to give Waters his due. And an interesting point to Louis Nasser -- it sounds like in "Amused to Death", Waters is referencing Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" more than Orwell's "1984", the big difference in the dystopian worlds is that Huxley imagines that people are given so much ego-numbing entertainment (and psychological conditioning) that they're too complacent in their pleasures (and afraid of changes) to step out of line.

    • @russellgentile4719
      @russellgentile4719 2 роки тому +1

Kind of where we are now in dystopia.
My opinion is we are purposefully mired in political, social, religious, and economic division.
This is to keep us divided and fighting one another. We're in a neofeudal system where the rich and powerful run and control everything and pass down crumbs at best.
But they feed us false hope and dreams while they would have us all engage in money and consumption worship.
      My opinion. Yours may differ.

"Is the Life We Really Want?" is as close to "Animals" as Roger got, it's an amazing record, the key to enjoying the album is to remember that this is a songwriter's record but with a big budget production, though I think Waters was held back by Nigel Godrich.

I agree, Godrich made the album too long and too samey. If you're going to have a long album, make it musically varied. Give it some space, like Amused to Death, which I consider a masterpiece. But apparently Godrich found ATD "impenetrable", which to me is much more applicable to Is This the Life. Still, a strong album with some incredibly beautiful stuff on it.

This is a wonderful episode. Intelligent, insightful commentary from everyone. I appreciate that Pete brought in such a great cast of people who are all bigger fans of the Waters catalogue, rather than just tossing off a solo ranking. My own ranking is very subjective and largely based on seniority. 1. Pros and Cons - 2. Radio KAOS - 3. Amused to Death - 4. Is This the Life. In reality, I absolutely cherish all four albums. The sound of Radio KAOS is simply a part of it's character and place in time for me. After 35 years, I grasp the story much better than I used to. As Luis mentioned, The Tide is Turning is an anomaly, due to it's hopeful nature. I get tears in my eyes every time he sings about those kids in the sun, wresting control from the hands of the warlords. It seemed like the tide really was turning for a while. Alas, it never really turned, which brings us to the resignation of Is This the Life We Really Want?, As Stephen smartly observed. I found this episode quite moving and thought provoking. It made me wish I could have been there to discuss these albums with such a cool group of people who understand and appreciate what Roger does so well. Kudos gentlemen. I agree with Pete about “Is This The Life We Really Want?” I think the majority of the album is boring and it meanders, it’s my least favorite of the 4, but Steven gives a compelling argument for the album too. Despite the 80’s production, I like “Radio K.A.O.S.”, I saw him on that tour too, the first time I saw him live, I’ve seen him several times after that as well, I don’t really listen to his solo albums either, but I like them, I have to say the “Amused To Death” songs work well live and are the most poignant.

Amused To Death is for me the best of the four, however I think the music he did for The Body (with Ron Geesen) & When The Wind Blows (half an album) are even better! The Body is more in the style of early 70's Floyd, and When The Wind Blows reminds me a bit of Animals.

Good show tonight , I bought Radio Kaos on cassette when it was first released . Wasn't keen on it at all, though I always liked The Tide is Turning . So I kinda didn't buy any of his solo stuff for years afterwards .
I then read a interview with Mick Box where he was asked to name a album that he thought should have been more successful than it was . He mentioned Amused To Death saying it was vastly underated . So I went and bought it along with The Pros And Cons and the cd version of Radio Kaos . Hello Steven my friend. I know exactly what you mean about Radio Chaos and the 80s. You know I'm a diehard Kansas fan. But when Kerry Livgren left in the early 80s, the band became a product of their times and were no longer the fabulously orchestrated prog masters they had been in the 70s. (BTW, I recommend that you grab a copy of Kerry's recently released Cantata. It's certainly not rock & tells a biblical story, but it absolutely shows what an orchestral genius he really is. It has 5 movements; the drums are played by Phil Ehart and there are a large number of great singers - after all, it is a Cantata. But Kerry plays ALL the other instruments. So if you enjoy classical music and aren't offended by religious lyrics, it's a very different but quite adventurous Livgren piece. Don't know of any other rock musicians who could write something like this.)

Gilmour and Waters are somewhat like Lennon and McCartney. Gilmour plays the green and pleasant land England, boating on the Thames, village greens with people playing a leisurely game of cricket in front of the Norman church and bustling pub. Rogers has an entirely different view of Britain as a vicious empire, grinding down anyone it comes across, whether the conquered people of the British colonies or the subjugated working class of Britain itself. Gilmour is a social Conservative; Rogers is an old-fashioned radical Socialist.
The difference with Lennon and McCartney is that Lennon would do sweet stuff sometimes and McCartney would do strident stuff sometimes - with The Beatles it is not always clear who is actually writing the song, whereas Gilmour and Waters stay in their lanes.
And Gilmour's sweet airs and Waters' sour observations work really well together - sweet & sour, a classic dish. And, separate them and you get saccharine and bitter. Gilmour represents style with limited substance, while Rogers offers substance with rawness built in.
If you are uplifted by wafty melodies, then Gilmour is your man. If you are uplifted by someone confronting gritty realities, feast on Rogers.
And like all yin and yang, they are going to be best together in juxtaposition, blended into one.

Radio Kaos has a few tracks I like but it's very dated to the late 80's, there are fan made versions that approximate the original double album version by adding in Radio KAOS period b-sides and stuff from the When The Wind Blows soundtrack that help make the storyline make more sense.

Not long ago, I met a really lovely guy in a wheelchair, sunning himself on a street in San Francisco. He had been a roadie for several massive bands including Led Zep, Paul McCartney and Pink Floyd. He was finally crippled in an accident while working for Paul McCartney.
I commented to him that Roger Waters must have been an 'interesting' man to work for. He said that Roger had always been really nice to him personally and that he had found David Gilmour much more difficult because he was always very aloof.
Perhaps we should ditch the idea of Roger Waters as being a personally angry man and see him instead as passionate and compassionate campaigner, determined to paint the world as he sees it, and with a horror of war, imperialism, propaganda, and systemic abuse.

When the Wind Blows isn’t aimed at kids, but it was marketed to UK kids when it was first released back in the 80s.
There was the graphic novel which was in the kids section in all book shops, & libraries, I’m pretty sure it was talked about on various popular kids shows as well.
Did you know that Watership Down is still the most complained about film? The BBFC still gets complaints now because of its U certificate.
That’s another horrific cartoon marketed to kids back in the day, & scarred many children throughout the 80s as it was shown every year in schools.
Considering Roger Waters has wrote iconic songs when he was with Pink Floyd, somehow was unable to scan on his solo albums.
He will easily sing one line of a song perfectly, then another line with no problem, On the third line however, he will try to fit in a paragraph which he ends up rushing through just to try & fit it in time with the music.

I am surprised that it was almost unanimous that Radio KAOS is last. It's my favorite. I am a huge Roger Waters fan and enjoy all his work. But here's my ranking and why...
    4) Is This The Life You Really Want? - Some decent tunes. Didn't grab me and I got the feeling that there are a lot nods and fan service here to older material. When I hear that I feel like he is running out of musical ideas. Still good, but prefer Gilmour's solo album around that time, Rattle That Lock.
    3) Pros & Cons - I like it. I just don't find the story as compelling and while I enjoy listening to it I rarely go back.
    2) Amused To Death - Great record. Love it. Great songs. Great instrumentation and great lyrics as always. It may have been #1, but it's a lot to digest in one listen and I don't find it as digestible as my #1.
    1) Radio KAOS - Love it! Sure... Very dated production, but the songs overcome that and in some respects I enjoy it (Home). I saw this tour. It was great. Roger seemed in a good mood. Much better than the Momentary show which did little to mix up the setlist (played that shitty Momentary from start to finish). I like everything about this record despite the dated production.

@@melaniethurber5117 Roger Waters' solo album Amused To Death (with Jeff Beck). Floyd's The Wall is a classic but I honestly don't find myself listening to it much (any more), same with Dark Side

You guys didnt mention Final Cut which is basically a Roger Waters solo album in itself because by that stage the band weren't talking to each other and I think the record label demanded one more album with the entire band before they would release Roger from the contract. But basically Roger directs the entire affair from go to whoa and the rest of the band were just going through the motions and you can very much tell it is Roger in charge from listening to any of the lyrics.

Wonderful show! I forgot that Division Bell came out around the same time as Amused to Death. It is such a vastly superior "pink floyd" album to the dull and uninspired Division Bell!

Amused to Death is overrated and hasn’t held up well. The album was a victim of the CD format and it has not aged well with me personally.
