  • AT AIMExpo this year, we had a chance to talk to the real experts on Honda's I-4WD. After watching this video, do you think it is a superior auto locking differential?

    One of the big features of the new Honda Talons is the auto-locking dif that Honda has put in it, known as the Honda I-4WD. Now if you have followed this channel or a while, you may know that I have always been a big fan of manual locking dif. I like to decide when the dif will be locked, and true 4WD is engaged. With systems such as I-4WD, the computer is basically deciding for you.
    The way this new Honda I-4WD (This is also in the honda Pioneer by the way). The computer determines when wheels are slipping by applying a small amount of brake, then redirecting that power to the appropriate wheel to help you with whatever obstacle had the wheels slipping.
    One of the benefit's Honda claims is this I-4WD system has the ability to be left on and is not just for slow technical obstacles. It is always "listening" and will even help you at higher rates of speed when needed (such as speed around corners).
    I am not sure that I am totally sold on it for everything, but I definitely see how a system like the I-4WD would be beneficial in a machine such as the Talon. That is, a machine built for speed where you may not like the idea of always having to stop and engage your locking dif. Not to mention how much Honda claims this will help in areas such as turning, whereas a full locking manual dif is not going to provide that same level of assistance.
    What are your thoughts? Leave a comment below and as always thanks for watching, and I hope to see you on the trail!

    I’m a locker guy but stopped to look at one of these today and it was a four seater. They took me for an off-road ride that had lots of hills and rocks, This thing is very impressive and if it doesn’t have any issues only a four seater YXZ would change my mind about buying one Next year.

    Have I4wd on my Pioneer 1000LE and my Talon R... I like it. Great informative video..!!

    It sounds like it would work. Mabe competitive drivers would prefer a locker, some folks like me want the machine to do all the work!

      I think many competitive riders would like it too for that same reason. It allows them to focus on driving at high rates of speed and let the machine assist. I am with you in that I think it sounds great personally, but i'm also a fan of being able to fully lock the dif myself.

    It's a cool system no doubt. I'd still be interested to hear their data on the life span of their brake pads compared to their standard 4wd with a switchable locker.

      Good point! I did ask about how it affected the braking. They told me it was so small and fast that you would never even notice. It's supposed to be super quick and sensitive so it's not really grabbing at all. Again though, that's word of mouth, not actual data like you said.

      I've read that it "eats front brake pads", but I don't know if that was from actual users wearing them out, or speculation that it would wear them out. I have about 1900 miles on mine, close to half of that on high speed sandy trails and rock climbing, it's always in 4wd. It's still on the original pads with plenty of life left.
      Almost everyone I ride with has a much more powerful turbo car and they can't keep up in the tight fast twisty stuff, they also have trouble in the technical climbing stuff. Part of that is driver capability, I'm usually ahead in all vehicle comparisons, but the Talon is making up for its lack of power by being able to put more of it to the ground better. 200HP doesn't mean much when all it's doing is throwing more dust into the air. When we get into a wide open flat, they fly by as I run out of power.

    He looks like Ron Higgins, the sportswriter. I wonder if they are related? Also, my brother had a Talon R with I-4wd and it works very well in all situations.

    What I would like to have on the Talon is a turf saver mode. Don't like digging up the lawn. Will using the i-4wd help? If not, could Honda reprogram it to have a turf saver mode or is it impossible due to the rear axle design?

    • @bigfootrider1
      @bigfootrider1 3 роки тому +1

      It's not possible with the current rear diff, it's a spool type which locks both sides together no matter what.

      I used to think that. After some time with the Talon I now know that its system is better 90% of the time.

    Very cool of him to give that explanation on camera for you! I love the Talon, but i got a deal on a Polaris 1000s4 i couldn't say no to recently. I need the 4 seater and honda doesnt have thiers available yet, especially at the price point i bought the RZR at. I hope to see a Talon out on the trail so i can see it in action in person!

      Agreed, they were all great guys to talk with! I love the Talon as well, but the Polaris S 4 is also an awesome machine man! Still seems like you are rocking something awesome.

    It’s a open diff with abs.... rip brake pads. Still like the Hilliard system Polaris uses better. Can leave in awd and it only locks the diff once the rear wheels start slipping. But it’s mechanical lock and not relaying on brakes

      My Talon has about 1900 miles, much of it in fast twisty sandy trails and rock climbing. It's always in 4wd and still on the factory brake pads with plenty of life left. I'm always ahead of the much more powerful turbo cars and a lot of it is because the Talon is putting its power to the ground while they're spinning tires sideways in every turn. RIP to the parts guy because it hasn't needed anything but oils and filters.

    It takes to much wheel spin for i4wd to kick in. If it kicks in at all!!! I agree with PistNbroke 100% "Can't beat a diff locker, period" The i4wd is the one thing keeping me from the talon and getting the YXZ1000r just for the locker!!! Other than that the Talon is ok.

    • @sirgriffinman
      @sirgriffinman 4 роки тому +1

      This is just wrong. It always kicks in unless it's broken which is no different than a locker.

      It's better 95 percent than different lock i have a talon 2700 miles on it and had other brands with dif lock and over 4000 miles on them the yxz is more of a open road my friend has on over 10000 miles and never used his dif lock the i four wheel drive engaged the second you turn it on

      Spend some time driving a Talon and you'll probably change your mind, unless you'd rather be behind one in your 'real 4X4' car that can't keep up.

      BS. I drift all the time, 4 wheel drift is faster and more fun...or turn it off and be more sideways and slower.
