I’ve done this myself because old printers contain a wealth of parts and it’s better to do this than to throw it in the garbage where it goes directly into a landfill. And ultimately that’s good for the environment as well.

Man, I do exactly the same thing.
Old CD/VHS players, computers, radios, even sold TVs.
You found a gold mine there with that printer.
It was a joy to watch this video. As are all your videos.

Agreed to the usefulness of old printers. I've also found that old VCRs are a treasure trove of good shapes!

1:44 that panel looks like a wall of a spaceship hanger.
That glass tube is the laser.

      I thought that too LOL

I think it's much more likely that the glass tube is the discharge lamp. The laser modules in the printers, even the older ones, are _tiny_

Our makerspace is in a recycling center, so I pickup printers once in a while just for this, all the fantastic pieces :D

MAN seeing it all in pieces is too satisfying!!! Can't wait to see what it becomes.
Also love that so much of what you use is recycled like this, it's just great. Someday, I'd love to buy things like this from you!

The glass lamp piece @2:56 is the heating for the fuser that "melts" the printer powder to the paper. It will get very warm if you put some power through it.

I can't always find parts like these, but just seeing them in your video is inspirational and good ideas to try and copy with other parts or 3D printing. Thanks for the show and tell!

Having dismantled a number of copiers and printers myself, i really appreciated that "speed cheat code" comment, lol!!!
And I love the knolling of parts on the blue cutting mat. That just looks fantastic!

You ever thought of using the paper rollers as road wheels for like a tank tread?
perhaps a robot that doesnt use legs or wheels but tracks

I recently used a toothed rubber belts from a Ducati motorcycle and a bunch of office chair wheels to make chassis with attached caterpillar tracks. In the end it however turned out the belts are to stiff to make the tracks move easily. Doh! But at least they look great. I mounted the whole contraption on a scratch built Thunderbirds style recovery vehicle. 😁

From a knitter's skeins of wool to the racks of woodworkers clamps - maker storage is the mother of nightmares like, drowning in the Garbage Compactor on the death star!

OKI! That's the brand that made the laser printer we used to make business cards at our office supply store like 15 years ago. I couldn't remember what it was but I instantly recognised that logo, they made fantastic devices.
I currently have a massive Lexmark waiting to be torn apart in my hobby room.

I also find that the large 'shell' pieces (especially back panels of TV sets) can be a source of thick, flat ABS sheet. Not always the biggest parts but useful for strong construction. and there are often interesting grills that with luck come in symmetrical pairs.

Super cool... I wonder if some of those larger outer pieces from the printed could be used as a base or a 'back wall' for the dioramas/enviros you create for your ships/robots? Might be a great starting point, scrape in some seams, add some paint... who knows?

@@CutTransformGlue When I saw that piece at 00:01:48 I thought for sure that could be a piece of a hull with the larger opening being an open hatchway OR a back wall in a hangar with that larger opening being a control room window etc. OR the outer hull of a larger ship with that larger opening being a hatch/window/docking bay opening... who knows?
Excited to see what you do with them!

Ever heard about the movie Silent Running. If not check it out. One could make very nice Valley Forge style spaceship from all of this. First I still have to build a 0,5 m paper model of the original design though. 😁

    • @negotiableaffections
      @negotiableaffections 25 днів тому

Ahhh, Silent Running. Do you remember the scene where Bruce Dern removes the damaged panel from the 'twitching' drone and it immediately relaxes with a mechanical sigh of relief? Such a delicate, beautiful moment.

@@negotiableaffections It's a great movie. I only recently got the deepe rmeaning behind it when I saw an explanation by Douglas Trumbull. As far as he was concerned it was about having no where left to escape to. I'd like to make that a bit more explicit. What do you do when everything inside you tells you all the others are wrong? Do you adapt anyway or are you prepared to go to extremes to defend your idea? One could say our heroe was forced to become militant because the rest refused to accept the truth. Accepting that the ending then suddenly becomes extra symbolic abn dlkess convoluted as it seemed to me in the past: Even with all his feelings of guilt and remorse he again chooses to do the ultimate, offering his own life to give that final forrest a tiny chance to survive, at least for a bit longer. I gues one needs to be a bit older and have gone to a few losses to understand that. My only point of critisizm is that some moments in hte movie are too cheesy, which actially diverts too much attention from the abovementioned deeper layers. But if you actually like those bits then all power to you. In every other aspect the movie is a masterpiece anyway. Also: In some respects it reminds me of V For Vendetta, which was also a very prophetic film. Alas!

I only realized this after I looked at the others, so you use bits of tech "stuff" to make other sci fi stuff? did I understand?
It's a fantastic form of recycling, well done.
