its just not a another final of wimbledon. This final reflects how hungry , how much one guy craved for this title, how much he gave in . A wild card entry went on to win the title. Goran ivanisevic the man who made tennis lovable those days. This final symbolises how much a wimbledon title mean to a tennis player, and how much success means to oneself.
nicely put
excellent comment sir. i was only 12 years old at this final, but it is definitely one of my favourites that I remember from growing up! infact this tournament in general was brilliant, since it also featured sampras vs federer.
The guy was a volatile loose cannon. He spoke openly about the "good Goran" and the "bad Goran" openly in the media. He was saved by consecutive rain delays in his match against Henman when he was basically giving the match away. There is a lot more about luck and being the fortunate owner of a massive serve than there is about grit and determination in this story.
what's that white spot on pat's head?
kumar shut the fuk up..........
21 years, I have watched it a hundred times, and I'm still welling up.
100% same
My favourite final of all finals - of all sports. The numbers and stories around this stagger me. From Goran being knocked out of AO in the first round that same year (first round of qualifying - no wildcard there) to being 127 in the world waiting on shoulder surgery, to being the first wildcard to win Wimbledon, to his father - who had been advised by his doctor to stop watching his son play because of a heart condition to - lets face it - not being the most composed player you'd ever seen, to being the first player to lose 4 finals at SW19 if Rafter had won and finally, to his own self-belief, right from the start. when he described that year being his 'destiny'. Additionally he beat Henman, Safin, Rusedski, Roddick and Rafter so no easy draw. I truly believe he would've crawled over glass to get to that trophy and that final game was pure theatre. He has his release.
Also, it should be noted how gracious Rafter was at the net after championship point. A true gentleman of the sport. Both players are sorely missed...
Pat Rafter seems like a really good bloke! He handled his loss with strength, respect and good humour! A true sportsman!
they played recently on the senior tour and at least once, they were seating on the bench together, laughing and talking - yep great buddies 😎
Gee, ya think Dumbo?
No doubt! Sheer class! He decided to retire early from tennis. He could have won the title after. I mean, he was back to back US Open champion, beating the best. As for Goran! So great to see him win after his 4th attemp in finals.
Could it be because a seagull dropped its poop on his head?
@JG-bw6luit is the biggest sport but it's followed by a bunch of simpletons
For me, the greatest moment in sports history. The passion, the determination, the mental strength to come back from 3 previous Wimbledon final losses and multiple set backs in the final itself. No one will ever forget peoples Monday, 2001
Goran was waiting all his life for this moment, it was a test for his determination, patience and perseverance. He was a wild card entrant in this tournament. What a server he was !!. Thanks Wimbledon for bringing back the memories
This is my favorite moment in tennis, ever.
Well it was #1 in my mind 4 yrs til Rafa vs. Federer '08
@J G Nonsense. Disc golf for sure 😆
It was my favorite moment ever,too........I love Goran!!!!!
Because this match was played on a Monday ( became known as the People’s Monday) this final had probably the absolute BEST atmosphere ever in a Wimbledon final! It was more like a Rugby or Football match than a traditional Wimbledon Tennis match and in my opinion it was all the better for it - genuine fans there rather than the Posh Toffs in their Suits and the Corporate snobs ......unfortunately Wimbledon would never allow a repeat of such a terrific atmosphere!!
Murray’s Wimbledon finals were exciting affairs when it came to the crowd connecting with him. But yes, Wimbledon is very very conservative and still often snobbish.
Wimbledon should do this more
All my friends liked Sampras or Agassi back then. Goran’s emotional, temperamental and fun personality made him my favorite. He had always come so close to winning the big one it was maddening! I remember being about 22 years old, crying with my teary-eyed father watching this amazing victory. I’ll never forget it.
Me to💪🙏👍😎
I've followed and watched Goran ivaniservic for all his career in tennis, but this one made me so so happy that he finally won the Wimbledon title.
I will never forget this. Ever. We may never ever see something like this again.
So glad i watched this live as it happened
We may see if Federer wins wimbledon know at 39 years of age after a knee surgery!

Did Federer beat Sampras in that year?
For me the most beautiful finale ever. I am a big Goran Ivanisevic fan, so also one of my best moments in my life
what's that white spot on pat's head?
h4rder10 Birth Mark
For me the sucking moment in my life was this Wimbledon. Rafter should've won this
The atmosphere was electric. I was over the moon when Goran finally won, but watching this 20 years later I feel so bad for Pat Rafter..great player and an even better man. A true gentleman in what must've been a heart breaking defeat.
Well said. Watched it LIVE!
Wanted Goran to win badly then.
Now 20yrs on I wanted PATRICK TO WIN ALSO!
Definitivno, jedan od meni najjačih sportskih trenutaka u životu...posebno u emotivnom smislu❤❤
Although I was gutted for Rafter to lose being an Australian😫😫,I was happy to see Goran Ivanisevic finally win that elusive Wimbledon title and retire a happy man.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😊
Goran Ivanisevic - what a character, tearing his shirts off, breaking rackets, kicking the nets. If anything, he’s one of the most entertaining players I’ve ever witnessed. I was happy to watch him win his first slam title. What other place to accomplish that than at Wimbledon lol! And Rafter, the cool , classy customer. What contrasts. Enjoyable match.
it's goran*
what's that white spot on pat's head?
Unsporting conduct
Yes tennis is always great with contrasts.
Its why the 1980 WIMBLEDON was great and '08
@@iannacorneliamaza it is Goraaaaaa
As an Australian and a massive Pat Rafter fan this still hurts almost 20 years on. So proud of him!!
I used to watch every Wimbledon final, for years. But for me, this was the apotheosis of all I sought in great sport, and the fight in someone coming back from being so far back.
The audience atmosphere the sense of humour even after ,to my joy, the one I wanted to win did, I have never watched another match.
Always crying ..such a strong story! To get a wild card and win tournement, one he wished the most! The atmosphere I think that this will not repeat for a long time!
One of the most spectacular match in tennis history!
He finally won the only Grand Slam before he retired! Congratulation to Goran Ivanis!
It is shame for sure
How many atp titles he won so that I can take my words back
How many times he was world ranking no 1
Goran Ivanisevic (Ivanišević)
To me. This remains the greatest grand slam final...the greatest drama ever! I love them both, but I wanted Ivanisevic to win. Not sure why...and what a gentleman was Rafter
Maybe becouse three lost finals in past😉
But 2019 changed all
Nema danas vise takvog navijanja ni na jednom turniru...svaka cast ovim ljudima...bravo Croatia...bravo Goran🙌🙌🙌💖💖
Not the best final, but the best ending of a great tale.
Not the best, but the most dramatic I can remember.
I got the best looks from my so called friends when I hailed this final over 2008. But now I see quite a few in my camp on UA-cam. Federer nadal is a decent match up but not nearly as good as the two wunderkinds separately playing nole. This match had a lovely hug showing true friendship between the gladiators.
what's that white spot on pat's head?
Goran was lucky actually. He tried his luck with enormous second service and that got right fortunately an ace
@@meenak3351 Well it was a hit and miss strategy throughout his career. But his serve was so good as a standalone shot and it was his day. He still had good groundstrokes and movement to break rafter in first place
Serve and volley galore, these guys kept coming in no matter what the score was, no matter if it was 1st of 2nd serve, absolutely the most epic pure Wimbledon Final ever. Also with the best crowd ever!
I remember,Me and My Brother Were literally Shaking through the Match points of Goran as he was our Ultimate Favourite since 1992 and we wanted him to win badly.I Think we would have broken our TV if Goran would have lost.Goosebumps then and Goosebumps Now.
Haha there was more of us i see. I'm coming from Gorans hometown and we were all so anxious about that match knowing Gorans history and temper. Me and friend watched final match and i broke tv with a bottle of beer after second double fault on matchpoint.
My favourite tennis match of all time brilliant tension the crowd on both sides were fantastic unlike all the other boring quiet please finals ,this was like a rock concert well done goran ivanisevic
Very emotional moment for me as well. Fully understanding how much he has craved for the championship and having seen his three previous Wimbledon finals on live, I literally burst into tears at the very moment of his victory
This match was peak Wimbledon personally. There have been great finals over the years but the story behind 2001 puts it on another level.
The 2001 Wimbledon has so much drama: beginning with the 19-year old Federer defeating Pete Sampras, marking the beginning of a new era. Then Fed lost to Tim Henman, who went on to have that epic semifinal with Goran. Tim's lost there marked the end of England's Wimbledon hopes for another decade until the emergence of Murray. Finally there's that epic Wimbledon Rafter-Ivanisevic final. 3 historic matches in one Wimbledon, the beginning of one era and the ending of many eras in men's tennis. Truly special.
Tennis was all about Nadal and fedrer as i grew watching it .This one match and struggles of Goran ivanisevic attempting 4 th time makes him special player of all time..
His winning in semis against Henman and rain ...makes one feel ,that God was indeed by his side that year.
Best crowd EVER in one tennis match i ever seen
They booed him no class
Even with all the great finals of the Big 4 I grew up watching .... this being the first tennis match I watched is still in my top 4 favorite finals ever
The only bitter part of this final was that I loved both players so much. Goran needed to win this, and I'm glad he did. But I wish he had beaten somebody like Sampras, who had won so many times before. It would have been more satisfying. I feel bad for Patrick here, he's such a nice guy.
Yeah it would have been Pat's first and only wimbledon. He won 2 U.S opens, but would have been nice if he had of added this. Especially since I'm Australian haha.
I agree, against any other opponent, I would have loved to see Pat win Wimbledon, but I was rooting 100% for Goran on this occasion.
Same bub.
BOTH are winners in my book.
But sadly someone had to lose!
@@NoxiousRob same
John Newcombe is also Australian only
Watching highlight of Goran winning wimbledon after his student NOVAK winning today was awesome experience.
My favourite tennis match of all time....
It’s crazy to think that Federer taking out Sampras opened the door for Ivanisevic. It’s like when Soderling defeated Nadal at the French 8 years later.
Vinod Shekar yes and soderling defeated Federer very next year making it easier for Nadal.
Oh don't talk like that please, even if Federer didn't take out Sampras or Henman over Federer, Goran would have at least gotten to the finals, he was in superious form for that tournament, more significantly he took out Henman when the whole crowd was for him. Its like Novak Djokovic these days when he is playing Federer.
@@sangeetajaiswal1638 Fedderer is 0-5 vs nadal on RG.
what's that white spot on pat's head?
@Peter Kelner so typical from Rafa´s fan
That day i was at sea with friends cheering, having beers, great memories..
Endlich gewinnt Goran Ivanisevic Wimbledon🇬🇧🎾. Habe mich für ihn so gefreut. 👍👍👍👍👍
What an atmosphere....never saw it again......
I was 12 years old that summer and still remember every moment of it. It was crazy being Croatian that day
I still get nervous watching Goran serve out this match. Absolute magic. Rafter showing pure class at the end as well. This is why I love tennis.
My favourite Wimbledon mens final of all time growing up.
Anyone who can fathom the importance of a Wimbledon title for tennis players especially someone like Ivanisevic who looked like he was born to win it..and having come so close..is bound to cry..
I started watching tennis because of Ivanisevic. I remember this match so well.. It was not telecast in India due to some licensing issue and the only option was to watch the news to see what is going on. I was watching BBC trying to get score and it was just fairytale when he was announced as the winner. I watched the deferred live much later in the day and it was just as tension filled :) Great player and made tennis all the more famous.
The one of the best tennis matches of all time.
Best Final Ever!
Goran is the genius love him player with big heart
I was so happy for him back then. I had watched him lose three heart breaking finals previously. Your heart just goes out to him. He really deserved this Championship. He was always my favorite tennis player.
Goran Ivanisevic won in his fourth match-point in his fourth Wimbledon final.... interesting coincidence..😊😊😊
One of my favorite matches, well done Goran!
To some I think this final and 1998 woman's final was THE most emotional in modern-day so far... because I cried so hard and happy for the results!!
Most dramatic final I have ever seen with Ivanisevic in the autumn of his career still be capable of pulling this off after numerous failed attempts before.
Autumn of his career??? He was just 29.
@@weedermann back then many players retired younger. Sports science and support teams were very different to now.
Enthralled by his serve, i became a fan of Goran. I remember during a match a woman in audience pointed out to referee that Goran's serve had crossed line. Goran was furious and shouted how could she tell it when she was wearing glasses...... Loved it
2 primary serve and volley players in the same match is definitely rare in today's game! Very rare and golden match!
I bless the rains down in Wimbledon! Happy 20th anniversary! July 9, 2001. After all these years I'm still happy watching Goran collapse onto center court!
One of the best Wimbledon finals! Classic match. Very suspenful.
I watched this live I was crying all the way I watched him since he started tennis this was definitely the icing on the 🍰
Was so happy Goran won so deserved was the best final ever.
I was there... camped overnight in Wimbledon common and then it was a mad dash to Centre Court after getting through the turnstiles!
I did the same, unforettable
wow so kool
WOW to handle the nerves in the last points. Double faults after double faults. Huge pressure and internal tension so hard to handle. From a wild card to the title. Impressive!
Most deserved victory ever.

Up until 2008,This was the greatest final I ever watched.
BEST Wimbledon EVER !!!!
Very, very impressive moment ever.
I still remember this so clearly.
words cannot explain the class of Patrick - being gracious in defeat may be most difficult but after a match such as this he was incredible ... Goran's victory was - struggling for a word - SUBLIME (still seems inappropriate) ... all was/is beyond brilliant !!!
What a strange and wonderful year for tennis. Federer cements his place on the world stage by beating Sampras in a match that later becomes remembered as a 'passing of the torch'. He then loses to home favourite Tim Henman, who made it to the semi-finals FOUR times but could never quite reach the final; this time being beaten in the semis by Ivanisevic, who made it to the *final* four times and finally, finally got the trophy in this incredibly tense match. One of the stories for the ages
Esa final fue una locura, un partido increíble !
Was good to watch this again. Had in on vhs for a while. Thanks.
Full of emotion ! Amazing moment
So happy Ivan won! After that, he lived happily ever Rafter.
ГОРАН- КЭЛКО Е ИСТИНСКИ, КОЛКО Е ВЕЛИЧАВ И СТРАХОТНО БОРБЕН!! БОГ Е С НЕГО!!!❤❤❤🎉🎉
Rafter deserved a Wimbledon title. But winning two grand slam titles, two US Open titles back to back at that, is a feat on its own.
Mario Escalante Ivanisevic deserved it really much.
Oh, I don't question that at all. I'm just saying Rafter deserved to win a Wimbledon title - not necessarily in 2001.
Should have won 2000. Sampras won on one leg.
He had a great chance in 2000.
But somehow he wasted the oportunity to go 2 sets up in that 2nd set tiebreak against Sampras..
Rafael Nadal should have won 3rd Wimbledon title in 2011 but he was outplayed by Novak Djokovic in 2011
Rafael Nadal should have won 3rd Wimbledon title in 2018 but his rival who is biggest rival beated him semis in 5th set 10-8 OK it happens OK
Rafael Nadal didn't feel sad for that loss take a chill pill sis
It was like a Davis Cup Final, at the decisive rubber, with Australia and Croatia tied 2-2. But not in Melbourne or Zagreb (with respect for both of them), instead on the best tennis court on Earth. Unforgettable atmosphere!
I was there on Centre Court that day. A life long Tennis fan in UK on a student Visa... 40 quid for a centre court Ticket. Once in a life time and the greatest Final of all time...what are the odds of that. Some moments live on forever. Wanted Goran to win so badly and at the end didn't want Rafter to loose as well. Sport at its finest...
So well deserved!! Maybe not for the match, but for his Wimbledon career performance!! 💪💪💪💪Goran!! ...And i still like Pat Rafter!! Tennis History at its finest
This was a master class in the lost art of SERVE AND VOLLEY 🤩🤩
I remember Goran career was over at that time. He was under 100 ranking and when he was at his prime he was second. In this match he put all that he has left.
Finally the history was fair enough. If someone reaches 4 Wimbledon final, then he deserves to win. So this title for Goran was just fair and no one deserved it more.
Look at the crowd. Untypical Wimbledon Crowd🔥
This was a year before I religiously started following an up and coming player who donned a kinda ridiculous ponytail, btw I was rooting for Ivanisevic like crazy during this match.
me too:)
The last game was stressful to watch.. even in highlights :D
Man dont i KNOW it!!!
I watched this live!!!!
I know !!! Even tho all of us watching know the outcome lol.
On a side note, Pat Rafter acted like a true sportsman after he lost.
Man, they should really open up the final to the public, the crowd here is just incredible. It's like a world cup final.
What a match it was. Saw it live on tv. Nerve wrecking.
Same 4 me, Asad.
I pulled 4 Goran.
Who was your pick?
Pat Rafter a most amazing player, but who didn’t like Goran - it was definitely his time!
Rafter was a very good tennis player and great character. Goran deserved this title.
It was a very emotional moment for goran and the best final witnessed
Patrick Rafter was such a superb volleyer at the net. Great dude!
It's a shame the centre court crowds aren't like this anymore. These days they are too reserved and most just sit there with no passion for the tennis !
It was one time only. It was people monday, atmosfere is like on Davis Cup match, final. Because of roof, that was the last ever monday final. People was camping thru the night outside, because the tickets for posh crowd is for sunday, and on monday morning is a all new ticket sale for final match.
So this is unforgetabble and uniqe.
@BetaOnPurposeLMS-coach it's exciting because of slam count and tennis history
How time flies 🇭🇷🇭🇷
Rafter hit that lob on MP 3 - unbelievable courage
What a gentleman Rafter was. Wimbledon nowadays, and other grand slams, seem like too mechanical, both for players and the audience. There's none like the excitement this match had.
The greatest win in tennis history!
No doubt! :)
Goran's lesson 4 me is never give in life or ON LIFE!
Has a player ever kicked the net like Ivanisevic did at 11:00? I love it!
That ball was in

Pat Rafter has a lovely heart 👍
He seems nice but was dismissive about henman or Goran when saying Agassi was his rightful finals opponent to the press (as if the draw was wrong somehow)
He had to win.. God can't be this cruel to someone... By the way the guy was a genius. Won Wimbledon knowing just one thing.. Serve.. And what a serve he had...
