It’s such a historic match. The end of Sampras domination and the beginning of Federer domination. Federer said recently that this was one of his probably 3 favorite games he ever played.
Its amazing that Federer was still using the racquet he used here up until a few years ago. While Murray/Djokovic/Nadal were all growing up with the new technology. He should have changed so much sooner. Such a handicap for him for those initial years he played Nadal etc.
Sampras hit a 121 mph second serve at 5-5 in the tiebreaker. Those are the kinds of serves that made him so absurdly good. This match was a true changing of the guard, perhaps more in retrospect, but Sampras was still playing extremely well at this stage.

From one great to another..a new era has started.both men are incredible . Heavily dependent on talent and skill.Prime sampras and prime Federer an absolute joy to watch.pure class
People recognize how brilliant Roger played, but don't give PETE enough credit for his plays. This was the worse year of PETE's career and he was clearly having an off day against a genius playing genius tennis, but he still came up with insane serves and volleys that made this match incredibly close. The 136 mph serve PETE hit in a tiebreaker down 2 sets to 1 followed a few points later by the on-the-rise, behind-his-back perfect-drop-shot volley Pete hit to win the 4th set was insane.
Pete may not have been quite at his best but he still came to play. Had *this* Pete showed up the year after, there wouldn't have been any shock upset - he'd have sent Bastl packing in straights, graveyard court or no.
The two greatest grass court players ever in an epic match! What an amazing display of grace and sportsmanship shown by both (esp. on the part of Sampras on two close line calls that BOTH went against him). I hope Roger can pull out another superb performance in what may be his last Wimbledon here in 2021.

While he had problems with Roger, my favorite player now, there were times when Sampras was what seemed, truly artificial inteligence.
Roger certainly modeled himself from Sampras' champion mentality. Compared to all the other guys, these two have the best stoic mental game. And it's obvious how much they benefited from it.
@@zxbc1 Djokovic is the mental and spiritual successor to PETE, and has said he took inspiration from PETE's mental strength growing up. PETE in turn greatly admires and supports Novak
I was very lucky to watch this match live on TV, and impressed by Roger’s game. However, I never thought he could achieve, even surpass, what Sampras has done at that time. I’m happy I was wrong.
Yeah I know he was young, it was just interesting to see how he developed over that time. Not many do. Murray was still pretty angry at times even up till recently. A lot of players show their emotion on court. Roger ended up being someone who has worked on that aspect of his game harder than most I think.
that iconic forehand return on matchpoint...Pete kept hitting his previous serves to Feds backhand ..and was getting burnt...Feds return game was superb throughout the match...I don't think Pete ever faced somebody with that type of return percentage in Wimbledonbefore.
No one will know today but the grass had been changed in 2001 to 100 rye . Now it was playing fast because of the rain but the bounce wasn't low like previous years, but Federer's hand eye coordination was incredible
I appreciate Federer's talent, but Sampras will always be my favourite player. I was born in 1985, played tennis as a teenager, and I had Wilson Sampras Tour rackets. He and Agassi were at their prime and their aggressive style always inspired me. Today I play Padel (pretty popular in my country) and I am still inspired by them. Now, Federer is a different player and what he achieved is unbelivable.
The serving from Sampras was just out of this world! The power and speed he sent over the net to Federer in that 4th set tie break was sensational ... hitting 134, 135, 136 mph serves with ease ... his serve was just unreturnable ... Federer couldn’t handle the power of the Sampras serve in that breaker. What’s even more astounding is he used a racket that he’d used since the late 80s/early 90s ... and if he’d have used more modern technology ... he’d have been thumping in serves at around 150 mph ... mind boggling! Never has a serve been so powerful yet so accurate ... Sampras was just a serving machine!
Sampras were considered by many then to be the GOAT ... now he's so far down the ladder in a blink of an eye .. its like Fed, Rafa and Djoker took turns to slap him in his face ..
There’s no excuses, but Pete was struggling that year, hadn’t won a title since US 2000,he was about 70% οf his best form,as for Roger, who could imagine the future, such a great player he would become
Probably the world will never see a champion like federer again...and this match was the starting...and also we will never see the reactions from federer like this in any match...seeing him getting angry, shaking head, frustrated while losing points..hahaha..tht was cute...long live federer...the GOAT of tennis
I’ve watched the full match a couple of times. It’s still a great experience of a style of tennis we just don’t see anymore. Especially over five sets.
exactly this young man beating there best champ and they cheered for him so hard when he won somehow they loved him first day haha i dont know how but they knew he was the one i guess
Man I still remember this match like yesterday I was pulling for Pete to go for Wimbledon title #8 but was shocked a young man by the name of Roger Federer beat him in 5 sets and it felt like a mirror image seeing Roger playing to Pete's style serve and volley and then attack Pete when Pete came to net. Who would've knew 16 years later Federer surpass Wimbledon for most Wimbledon titles
The game favors servebots as demonstrated with Federer's style and the fact that they made the Australian Open courts faster in 2017. Why did Federer win 8 Wimbledon titles and only 1 Roland Garros? Because his baseline game is not that good, on clay the serve is not so relevant. Due to the lower speed of clay, the serve is neutralized. No serve, no party.
Grande Federer!!
Sampras 2nd serve back then is better than 90% of players today, end of discussion, and don't get me going with half volley delicatessen, just watch 16:04
All credit to Federer for this match but the title was never within reach. It's one thing to knock out the then number one seed, current champion, and greatest grass player of all time, but it's another thing to derail peak Tim Henman's inevitable march towards a semi-final exit at Wimbledon. Some tasks are simply insurmountable.
Funny, though to be fair, while Henman's game was one dimensional, it was effective on this fast grass. That he had only one dimension prevented a slam victory, though he could have gone close by winning one semi. Bad luck may have cost him with a rain delay.
An iconic match, because like the commentator said, it really was a passing the torch moment in the sport. Two legends briefly overlapping at the home of tennis. 👋👋
Actually this match should have gone to Sampras it is a mistake by the line man. at 6-5 tiebreak the federer shot is out. Sampras would prob win the game. And this is the worst year in Sampras career.
I agree that Sampras was cheated on a critical line call - and there are only a few moments when he really ramps it up and when he does he wins. But it doesn't matter at all - this matches doesn't prove who's best - it's more like an amazing gift that both champions faced each other on their favorite court and it went to five very close sets.
I love Federer but damn I'm happy he stopped playing with that thing around his neck! The only flaw in a flawless player. And so cool that Mohamed Lahyani was the chair ump!

This is when everybody in the tennis world realised a new champion is about to emerge! 20 years after, Federer not only beat Sampras in that Wimbledon fourth game, but also broke all his records, if I'm not mistaking. What a champion!
Да, по количеству тбш именно Федерер первым обошёл Сампреса

Two legends playing a single handed backhand. It’s such a privilege to be born in this era
rogers serve changed so much
For the better
Jason Zhou , yeah, interesting that pros change their serve during carreer. One would think their serve has been developed entering the tour.

Quite emotional aswell
People act like Federer beat 1996 Sampras.

Surely one of the great classics of Wimbledon history.
I watched Sampras through the years, he grew on me as he defeated favorites I never thought would lose. He became a favorite! I watched matches where Sampras played like a finely tuned robot, possessing unhuman skills that I've never seen matched. While he had problems with Roger, my favorite player now, there were times when Sampras was what seemed, truly artificial inteligence.
He was so good on service games
Roger certainly modeled himself from Sampras' champion mentality. Compared to all the other guys, these two have the best stoic mental game. And it's obvious how much they benefited from it.
@@zxbc1 Djokovic is the mental and spiritual successor to PETE, and has said he took inspiration from PETE's mental strength growing up. PETE in turn greatly admires and supports Novak

TIGERSABU no this was already slowed Wimbledon. It was slowed in Autumn of 2000.
No it was really slow in 2008
I'm thinking they will be returning to fast conditions again. Best 3/5 sets every round is too long for young viewers today
I don't know why, but Sampras was one of my favourite players. Maybe because Sampras just played. Without emotions. He was a machine 🙂
I was very lucky to watch this match live on TV, and impressed by Roger’s game. However, I never thought he could achieve, even surpass, what Sampras has done at that time. I’m happy I was wrong.
People forget Federer had a temper in those early days. He then, through mentoring, became ice cold.
oldskool he was 19 dude
Yeah I know he was young, it was just interesting to see how he developed over that time. Not many do. Murray was still pretty angry at times even up till recently. A lot of players show their emotion on court. Roger ended up being someone who has worked on that aspect of his game harder than most I think.
oldskool yes i believe he went through therapy for anger and temper management, he was and still is very open about it

that iconic forehand return on matchpoint...Pete kept hitting his previous serves to Feds backhand ..and was getting burnt...Feds return game was superb throughout the match...I don't think Pete ever faced somebody with that type of return percentage in Wimbledonbefore.
Then why isn't he serving fast coffee?
The accurate part comes from that ancient, thin racket. Him being able getting near 140mph with that thing was a huge advantage.

how epic this match was, a changing of the guard.

Feels so good seeing this match again. God, I wish Federer would get younger by 10 years and start playing again.

Sampras' serves are freakin terrifying!
Fooking hell
they didn't call him pistol for nothin. best server in history.
yeah, sounds like a cannon going off.
At this age Federer already displays a volley better than any top player today. Looks like nobody trains this skill very much these days.
At least RF has 5 times Roland Garros finals. He could win only 1 Roland Garros only because of Nadal, not that RF has a bad baseline game.

Why being so disrepectful towards Henman? He beat Federer fair and square.

Funny, though to be fair, while Henman's game was one dimensional, it was effective on this fast grass. That he had only one dimension prevented a slam victory, though he could have gone close by winning one semi. Bad luck may have cost him with a rain delay.
