I know this is an older video and is a cool experiment, I also noticed that you explained the basic operation of a glow plug ( catalytic reaction) which is cool, as most videos I have seen kinda skip over the basics for those just getting into this. Great job, keep em' rippin! Peace👊

I would need to disagree somewhat. Nitro engine can run gasoline with a glow plug. I modified a Traxxas trx 3.3 nitro engine to run on 93 octane gasoline mixed with 10% caster oil... so I would know. You were right about compression and the glow plug not reacting properly. What I did was swap out carburetors, run the hottest glow plug I could find (lc3), and increased compression to about 13:1 where the glow plug would assist detonating the gasoline rather than reacting with the with the gasoline. One big advantage is that no catalytic reaction takes place so the glow plug can last for much longer than it would on nitro fuel. Here are links to production gasoline glow ignition engines based on nitro engines. I did all my modifications based on the difference between the GX-40 in the link below and it's Nitro counterpart, the AX-40. www.nvengines.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=159&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=65 www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?I=OSMG1513 P.S. -The O.S. I actually just did this experiment myself with my rc10gt ran it and drove it on gasoline it runs terrible even with a high compression ratio that being said my fuel was a little bit older so I'm going to retry it again here soon that's the glow plug I use is the OS GG series glow plug if you check out some of my newer videos you will see what I have done
Castor oil being a vegetable oil does NOT mix well with a mineral oil such as gasoline. It will not work well, and your bearings will not last long, as you won't get a consistent supply of lube as the Castor and gasoline very quickly start to seperate in the tank of fuel. Not a good idea to run your engines on this....
You can make a Four Stroke Glo engine run on Petrol / Oil mix using a spark ignition. This includes lower the compression ratio a little. Its easy, Ive done it. Worked first time. 30:1 petrol/ oil mix... You can even make a two stroke Glo engine run on the same mixture by adding 15% Methanol. The Methanol addition allows the glo plug to work...... You're Welcome...🤔😳😏😏😏🇬🇧
Absolutely you can I have done it many years ago. But the point here was people keep saying they are Diesel when they are not or why can't they just add Diesel or gasoline to save money. Had a comment asking well since it has a glow plug it should be able to run on pump Diesel? I'm like no it won't
Hydrogen is very easy to ignite, in fact it's too easy. I assume it would ignite prematurely and it wouldn't run at all with a glow plug. You would need a spark plug and an ignition system.
what were the advantage for using these diesel instead of using just a plain plane glow engine? And would plane engines work for rc cars too if there was a way to start them sense all they are is the same thing as a car engine without a spot for a pull start
Diesel was before glow engines. It has more pull power less rpm and easier to get fuel if you can get the chemicals witch can be hard depending on where you live. No one has made Diesel engines since the 80s never took off in North America. Was mostly a European thing. There was a company that tried them in rc cars but it again never took off because no one could understand how to run them or make fuel. Running airplane engines in rc cars or pointless. A lot of work to get them to not over heat and run properly. It's absolutely not worth the effort. Just buy a car or truck engine that's already designed for your needs
Dose not work that way. The gasoline burns super lean and hotter then glow fuel and it just destroys the fuel system it also makes way less power i did try it with a specific glow plug and it had no power and the engine runs over 400°f and yeah... bad
@@thebug4046 If you were yo have two identical engines: *One nitro (with glow plug and 2 strokes) *One petrol (with sparkplugs and 4 strokes) Do you think the nitro one would produce more power?
@@P_double_H Well there is both 2 and 4 stroke glow engines AKA Nitro most any RC car engine is a 2 stroke and the 2 stroke will make more top end power than the 4 stroke which makes better torque and the less RPM Hence the reasoning why you don't see 4 stroke engines in RC cars
The GG Gas glow engine is designed to run like that These regular glow engines will not run properly at the carburetor cannot deal what the fuel mixtures being that different and there is no glow plug that will fit these engines that will accommodate them to run on gasoline properly
I don't believe it was an actual issue with the strength of the connecting rod in the Dynamite and the SH gasoline engines. I believe it was simply a problem with not having a correct lubrication that worked with gasoline in these tiny engines, and it was mostly bearing issues that caused the broken rods. EVERY single failed one that i looked at had a wasted rod bearing. I havent seen ANY broken rods that had an undamaged bearing in the big end of the rod. With the use of gasoline, the engine manufacturers could NOT use their proven Castor oil and blend of 11 herbs and spices that have worked with glow fuel for decades. It didn't mix well with gasoline, and they had to use typical 2-stroke oil instead. For whatever reason, the typical 2-stroke oil just did NOT work with the small size of the bearings in these smaller engines. It works ok with larger plane engines that have larger bearings, and more importantly, turn less than 10,000 RPMs. BUT, the oil just didn't work with the smaller bearings and higher bearing speeds of the smaller car engines. The small 1/8 scale gas engines, that SEVERAL companies have now tried, are now all gone and all the companies that have made them have abandoned their projects. If it was just an issue of weak rods, they could have very easily overcame that problem. I think that if they could have been made to work, little 1/8 scale and 1/10 scale gasoline engines would have been a BIG deal, as nitro prices are getting out of hand, and the tuning of a gasoline engine is much easier. Another bonus with the little gasoline engines with a spark ignition is that they are only 1 step away from fuel-injection at that point..... 😁 👍 Its TOO bad that they couldn't make it work..
Yeah I understand how it works it's just that people believe since it uses a glow plug that will run on diesel fuel or kerosene or some other exotic feel other than methanol.
You're wrong, I've done it ..Running rod big ends is caused by not lowering the compression ratio to run on petrol. Using a spark ignition allows correct ignition timing...It's got nothing to do with the size of the engine...😏😏🇬🇧

No, no, no.... you couldn't be more wrong. Nothing COULD be further from the truth. Look it up for yourself how a GLOW engine plug works... It's an endothermic chemical reaction between the Platinum in the coil of the plug, and the Methanol in the fuel, that creates enough heatbfor ignition. It is NOT just the heat of the glowing coil, and the compression of the engine that determines the ignition point. It IS the amount of Platinum in the coil, the thickness of the wire in the coil, the amount of Methanol in the fuel, AND the compression ratio of the engine that dictates the ignition timing of the engine. The ignition point is far, FAR, from "fixed".
@davelowets na , it's fix with all that, You can't change the timing while it's running, all that you said is how WE fix it up too run the way We want, 🎶 😏
I tried it before it the tuning is almost impossible and the engine gets extremely hot extremely fast and makes 1/3 the power of normal and needs a special glow plug that needs mods to work not worth the hassle
