    You are the ultimate Victorinox legend Felix! I just used your method to change the scales on my victorinox handyman to the plus scales with the pen, and I was able to remove the old scales with absolutely no damage! Thank you!!! I love these workshops!

    Invaluable help. I solved a problem with no fuss thanks to this video.
    My 4y son messed around with my knives, and managed to insert a pair of Leatherman tweezers from his Style PS into my SAK slot. They are smaller than victorinox tweezers so they fell deep in and were impossible to take out.
    Thanks to this video i managed to unlock only one rivet (the one closer to the tweezers slot), take the Leatherman tweezers out and click the rivet back in. Opening one rivet only allowed me to have my sak back with the scales holding fast as new.
    Thanks Felix

    So after watching a number of Felix videos I went our and bought a huntsman. Didn't realise it came without pen etc. Watched vids, did mod, chuffed. Now fathers day has just passed in UK and I now own 3 SAK (champ, huntsman and compact). 1 for backpack, 1 for jkt and one for EDC! What a lucky chap I am! Felix keep them coming. Your enthusiasm is catching.

    Great to have you back Felix!
    When replacing the scales on a knife with a corkscrew, open it out before putting the knife in the vice.
    The corkscrew stands slightly proud of the scales, that way you get even pressure.

    I just happened upon this video in my feed. It couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment. Just yesterday I had a look at my wife’s white SAK which I gifted to her 30+ years ago. The scales are all discolored from sitting in her various handbags with cosmetics over the years. My intention was to clean them up with 1500 & 2200 wet/dry sand paper then polish them. This will make the process much easier!
    Thank you!

    By the way, there is a much easier way to remove scales without damaging them, and subjecting them to water submersion. Take 2 rice bags (used for heat application), place in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds to get good an warm (40-50C). Place one on a counter, the knife in the middle of it, and place the other bag on top. Let sit 5-10 minutes and then remove like in the video. Almost zero plastic is removed and much simpler (to me at least).

    • @ewakingwood
      @ewakingwood Рік тому +4

      That certainly simplifies the process in removing the need to clean out all the water from the tiny spaces inside the knife AND eliminating the need to relube the pivots!

    • @ChrisInTheMine
      @ChrisInTheMine Рік тому +10

      I suppose you could also use a ziplock bag to submerge the knife without getting it wet, if you didn't want to go and buy those heat bags.

      If you happen to have a food dehydrator you can set the temp and bake it! They have a temp range up to 156°F and a timer. (These are good for drying 3d print filament too...)

    Thank you for this really useful guideline. I did that with ruby plus scales for my deluxe tinker. But instead of using a vice for reassembly, I soaked the new scales in the hot water, too!. Then, after quickly drying them, I could mount them by just laying the preassembled knive and scaless on the desktop between two paper towels and pressed from above like reanimating...worked with little pressure like a charm. No gap, no scratches, no danger of applying to much pressure.

    They should sell replacement scales, with modular tools. Like:
    A whistle
    A clock
    A flashlight
    A single-hand-opening slip knife
    A storage compartment for matches
    A magnetic scale that is made of ferro rod material
    Ect.

    Many thanks for this video Felix. The new scale has the hole for the pin. The old red scales didn’t. I now have a refurbished SAK to replace my own Climber knife that was recently confiscated at an airport

    Hello Felix!
    I had a Swiss Champ that had Plus scales, and a Huntsman that did not. I swapped the non-Plus scales over to the SChamp, and then sent it in for maintenance to Victorinox. I asked them to replace the scales for Plus scales, which they did. I now have Plus scales on my Huntsman and SChamp. :) The Plus Scales are about $16 on eBay, but they were about $3 for Victorinox to replace them.
    Cheers!

Been EDC the "Farmer Alox" for more than 3 or 4 years now and its still my favourite knife of them all. @@RatsAndFunTV Yea I'd never put down the brand I've just never owned one. They seem awesome in ways a leatherman multi tool isn't. There is something classic about them and simplicity that I like. I need to buy one but there are so many I can't figure out which one would suit me the best.

      @@r1w3d If you whant to try a good tool, try the swisstool. I hown one from 1996, and there is nothing who have fall appart, or broke or whatever. I am prety sure than you will apreciate . That cost the same than the leatherman. I said all this to encourage you to try it.

    very useful trick to heat up the knife in hot water, I'll have to try it when switching to plus scales.
    To avoid leaving marks from a vise, I took another aproach: I cut off two 10cm-pieces of an aluminium-L-profile - as they have a smooth surface, they don't leave marks. I also use them to cut short threaded bolts. Clamping the thread will leave indentations in the aluminium, but you don't mess up the threads.

    Hey Felix, thank you for another really "cool" trick ( ; Some minutes ago i simmered my Ranger sous vide, the handle shells as well. So that they didn´t need to dry after the process. Now i´m guilty of wasting some plastic, but at least i´ll use the leftovers for a portion coffee in the woods : )
