Nice to see the old place again, it must be 65 years since I was in there. Being a "geordie" expat living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, I miss the standard English foods. One of my favorite typically English things to eat is Black Pudding, haven't been able to get any in western Canada. That stew was making my mouth water. Keep on doing the great videos around my birthplace.
I used to do all my shopping there when I was skint. Great fresh produce and they always gave good deals for regulars. Its defo changed a lot but great to see all those independent multicultural food places. Will visit next June when we're back 👍🏻
Couldn’t agree more on highlighting the independent food that the market offers. My kids really enjoy trying different places, with their particular favourites being Redhead’s and Bao Down 👍🏼
Eats was always my go to place on a Friday after work, for mince and dumplings with veggies. Until I got a car. So bypassed the toon from Wallsend to dunston. Now seeing that video, just might jump on a bus at the weekend, and pay a visit. Thanks for the reminder eddy.
I've not been in the Granger market for probably going on 35 years now, there was a secondhand bookshop on alley 2, next to the baccy shop I believe - spent hours in there! Live too far away now though to pop in! ... But it is so nice to see the place still thriving and full of business ... Thanks for the video :D
I was only in there yesterday, but didn't get owt to eat as we'd just been to Costa. Makes me think we should support small independent businesses more, instead of the huge fat cats that probably dont pay all their taxes and pay their staff poorly. It was great to see the place buzzing - much busier than in your video. I'll definitely be in there for some bait next time im in the toon. Great video Eddie.
Good stuff. I love that Greek place. Miss the Mark Toney's from the arcade, used to love a bacon roll in there. Some other ones I haven't tried yet - Next time I'm in!
I had a good look round the Grainger market last Saturday..lots of people having lunch and snacks in the new eataries.. really nice atmosphere..the fruit and veg stalls second to none and all very busy..would thoroughly recommend the sausages at the pig stye.. absolutely delicious...the cheese stall has always had fantastic cheeses been there for 80 years!! . thankyou for sharing your very interesting videos on Newcastle much appreciated and so informative 😊
Brings back fond memories Eddie. Remember my Grandma used to take me there as a Child in the mid to late 70's. Totally different now to what it was then. Remember it being more Butchers, Fishmongers, Fruit & Veg and clothes stalls. Place used to be bustling, not like it is now.
Great watch. My gran used to take me there often as a child in the 80s. Looks totally different with the places to eat; hadn’t realised that there was so many to choose from now. Great to see the market being used to though as many of the traditional stalls are no longer there.
Thanks for the tour of the grainger market Eddie first time l went in was over 65 years ago never been for a long time but l will. Make a point of going very soon .great video Eddie 👍
Commenting from Japan, haven’t been through there in a long time. Seem to remember a cafe I went to as a kid, early 80’s maybe called Hutton & Oliver, something like that. Great to see the Market again though. Arigatou gozaimasu.
OMG that peach melba sold me on Eats Cafe. You're 100% right, we don't use the Grainger Market enough. I'll definitely call in when I'm in Newcastle later this week. Cheers for another great video Eddy 👍
never been in there for about 30 years...... had no idea there was that much going on. Will definitely be trying it next time I'm in town. Great video !!
I travel 200 miles regularly to watch Newcastle, and I always go to Eats in the arcade, good food, good prices, good service and the staff always good for a chat.
Big fan of the Granger Market. That beef stew looked absolutely ideal! I used to live just above Granger Market on Clayton Street. I always called into Oliver's around 7:30 in the morning to buy a sausage sandwich on my way home after finishing my hotel nightshift. Great days! The Granger Market is also supposed to be haunted.
Hi Eddy, you've been very busy behind the camera this week! love your videos. Takes me back to my youth when visiting family in Newcastle from "down south" with my mam and dad (usually Xmas hols.). We never ate out in those days, but I'll take a note for when I next in Newcastle visiting from Hong Kong 😋
Hello Eddie. Just missed you at Eats today. I tried the Beef Stew on your recommendation. The added bonus was finding the dumpling in the middle. Very nice and tasty. Well done👍
Highly recommend the Cumberland sausage rolls from the Pig Sty. £3.50 and you'll be full for a long time after one of those! Great video, love the Grainger market
Hi bro Eddie another good content again👏! I am surprised to know such an old school market with so many great foods! Will go when I go Newcastle soon! Cheers ✌️
Great video. I can’t believe the amount of places in there, I haven’t been in probably 20 years. Just somewhere I never think to go but will have to make the effort to now.
Came over from N.Ireland for the Arsenal game. Took the wife and our 7 year old son to Cafe Eats - on your recommendation. We got a great bacon sandwich (bacon bap it’s called here) and nice mug of tea. It was great and well priced. All the food looked lovely.
Great video Eddy, all the years I’ve been going over the town and I walk straight past the grainger market. Didn’t realise there was so much going on in there. Must pop in with my lass this Saturday. Bad laughing at the end there, can I see your fan 😂 you’ll never live that down. I was in the front garden one day and I asked my neighbour do you want me to trim your bush😮 felt a right nugget 😂
Totally agree about supporting local independent food venues, much better than the multinational outlets. Usually healthier too, for the customers and the staff!
Just found your channel. 😊. I was at Grainger Market two days ago for the first time in about 15 years and went to that same cafe and had pie, peas and chips. Great quality and value. You didn’t mention it, but there also a Sri Lankan place at the end of one of the alleys. Can’t remember which one.
The Bagel shop (although not your thing) is outstanding. It is such an underrated place for food, the Grainger Market; great that you are giving it exposure👏. Great video as always!
Great video Eddie. Always informative. Over in the Toon next week for the Brighton game- staying Quayside and will definitely be checking out Grainger Market.🇨🇦
Always try and make it there on my lunch break. Really popular. You even missed out some highlights for me - French oven / pet lamb bakery are superb. Matthews cheese is brilliant value too! The two Chinese places you showed are great - Dumpling and bun - lovely family owned place that is incredibly popular and for good reason. you can watch them rolling the dumplings in the background. Ask for selection if you can't decide! If struggling get the pork and cabbage and a BBQ pork bun - thank me later! They've been long time residents in Grainger. - The noodle bar and Chinese burger place is honestly the most authentic Chinese in the city. The food is on the pricey side for Grainger but portion sizes are large. There may be Chinese pop music but if you want a taste of China that's your place. Cash only and not everyone speaks English but you'll get fab grub. They've been around a long time too through thick and thin with Covid. It's always got a healthy number of students missing a taste of home in which is always a good sign.
Remember the butchers with all the rabbits hanging from hooks with bags on their heads as a kid. Still have nightmares. 😂. Shame they don't let ya walk around with pets when I visit.
Can you remember the fish mongours in the green market? I used to love to go and poke the eyes out and some of them still had a bit of lie in them 😂 Sounds really bad but still remember like it was yesterday. That was 40 years ago now. Take care Eddie mate 👍👍👍
Correct underrated place been in popular place for older people to meet. And very quiet. The coffee lounge I use. Will try your recommended coffee shop next time
That Greek place and the Cuban one are right good by my book. French Oven is grand too for a tea cake and all. Probably good I'm not in town often as I'd end up fat as house with food like that on offer.
We were in the toon on holiday in sept 2023 and there seems to be a few places that have opened since then. I always stop at Eats for a peach melba or two every time I pass there. Hoping to be back again sometime in '25.
My husband and I went into Grainger Market on Wednesday, We called into Cubanos for our lunch. The Cha Cha Cha was to die for! You really must try it :)
Snackwallah is brilliant and very reasonably priced. The pani puri are top notch. I know some meat-eating folk are wary of vegan food but this is worth a visit even if you’re not vegan - I’ve seen some of the grainger market butchers picking their lunch up from there before!
Often in town to get my haircut at The Hoi Polloi and always walkthrough the Grainger Market. Seen that Cafe Eats but never gave it a try, may do now Eddie. Usually go to Redheads for Mac & Cheese or Slice is nice. Meatstack in the Bigg market do a great burger as well.
I love going into the Grainger Market when I'm in Newcastle it's a fantastic indoor market, second only to the indoor market in my home town of Cork City called the English market 😜 if you're ever visiting Ireland and go to Cork City I would highly recommend it.
There is some cracking places in the Grainger it’s become a a real jewel in the middle of the city. Shout out to Feds, Baby Bagels, the Cuban sandwich place and the pizza shop. And I bought some beautiful fresh fish from the market at the weekend, whipped up a storm for wor lass on Saturday dinner

There's a pizza place in the Grainger Market that does huge slices of pizza for around £3.50. They're like New York sized pizzas and they're delicious. I also love Fat Hippo on Shakespeare Street. A burger, fries and an alcoholic drink for £16. Not cheap but it's a treat every now and then.
Next time I'm back in the country I'm going to have to visit. When I was a teenager it was still pretty much all butchers, grocers and cut price clothing... Nothing like this number of cafés and eat-in places. A great evolution in the market given a lot of the old businesses' custom havs gone to supermarkets or online.
