Eddie love the grainger market remember going in when I was young and taken my children in often going in the weigh house buying meat haven't been in lately it has all changed it is lovely keep up the good work Eddie your great 😊😊😊
Another excellent example of one of the things that made Newcastle such a great town. I hope your video gives the market a good boost, although I doubt it will ever be as busy as it once was. Great video Eddy!
Hi Eddie, remember me trailing through there with my Grandma back in the mid 70's when I was 6 - 7 and all I can remember from back then was the smell of meat as there were hundreds of Butchers in the Grainger Market with huge Pig and Cow carcasses hanging euuuw!. Also fruit stalls and Fish Mongers. Been through recently as a 50 year old and my has it changed, the amount of empty stalls is saddening.
Another lovely video reminding me of when I was a child and my mam and aunt would take me to Grainger Market to buy meat and game from Hector Hall. We would go thru to the Green Market and see plants and pigeons for sale. Loved going thru Central Arcade to visit Windows music shop. 🎶 My ma was from Newcastle so it was all home to her although we lived in Tynemouth. We would get the no 11 bus to Haymarket and have lunch out. What a treat. Bowers bacon and egg grill in the lane beside the Grainger Market lovely memories
Worked in here as a 15 year old at Bookless! Happy days 💖 Loved it! Another great video. Nice to hear the history, thank you! 💖🥰 I didn't know about the tunnels...I definitely need to pay a visit 💖 Looks a lot different to what I remember and still independent traders! Love it 💖
Great video Eddy takes me back to being a kid in the early 70s espically the weigh house my mother drag me in there every visit she never seem to gain or loose any weight hhhaaa Keep them excellent videos comming mate
Brilliant content once again bud, I used too love going to the granger market with my mam back in the mid 90s and tbh it hasn’t really changed what a brilliant place would recommend any tourist to Newcastle check it out, very nice and friendly people
Old myself now but remember my long gone Mam and Dad taking me to the market as a young child in the late 50s early 60’s. Can’t go there now without the nostalgia it creates.
Lovely video Eddy. I love the Grainger Market and luckily live not too far away, so can get in regularly for fruit & veg, cheese, fish etc. Always good for a wander round or a bite to eat!
I love the Grainger Market. Very much part of my youth and I still go in regularly. I believe my Nan worker in a Hat Shop in there way back?? You could spend a good few hours mooching about those aisles. Great piece of local history….brilliant!
I used to work for Jess butchers in alley one….our fridge was in the cellar….accessed by a trap door….makes you think now if it had been one of the tunnels in its previous life, enjoyed the vid nice one Eddie 👌🏻
Was in on Monday visiting "The Geordie Banger" for a pork and blackpudding sausage roil, absolute banging. One of the cafes was used in "Purely Belter" and its still there today.
Great video. I remember my dad taking me through there in the early 70's and getting winkles and other shellfish for Saturday supertime and Match of the Day. As I got a bit older used to the HMV shop in there for all of the punk singles and albums out at the time. Still got them all stored nice and safe here in Vancouver. So much to go and explore when back home next.
Hi Eddy another great video! I love the grainger Market and the central arcade. Loads of amazing places to eat in the market. I first discovered the meat stack there my favourite joint.
I love the Grainger market . When I was a student [in the 80's] I managed to live off 15 pound a week by shopping there. This made me want to go visit it again
My brother had a carpet stall there In the 90s. Was right near the grainger games stall when they had the round stalls in the Arcade. There used to be a great second hand book shop at the top of one of the alleys too, which I was told it had sadly shut down a few years back.
LOVE THIS! Coming from the coast visiting the toon was usually a twice a year treat so it is great to learn more. The Geordie Expats will LOVE this video Eddy!
I left the North East a long time ago now, but I remember going to the Grainger market with my nanna. I always used to nip my nose because of the smell of meat and no matter what time of the year it was it was always baltic. 🥶 Thank you for these great posts, they’ve brought back a lot of happy memories.
Great content Eddy, stepping foot in the Grainger Market is like going back in time there's plenty of great independent shops inside there that are worth checking out.
Brilliant Eddy, always loved the good ald Grainger Market, I left the Toon 30 years ago but I go back to visit often, hence bumping into yer good self, great tour...but you forgot to mention it also has a toilet stop for lads n lassies caught short and the best signed shop, "The Cheap Tab Shop" classic! Didn't know aboot the air raid shelter entrances though...everyday is a school day! Keep up the crackin videos canny lad😎
Thank you for another video Eddie, very interesting, I will certainly have to explore these places when I move in a few years , it's been .six years.sonce I was.last.in Newcastle :)

The grainger market is the best place in Newcastle. Used to work on Nelson Street. Was hoping you would feature Pet Lamb patisserie (if it's still there that is) they do the best brownies I've ever had. It's on the nun street side of the open area. Some great food and butchers. Great video Eddy!
Hi Eddy, my parents and I love your channel. We love the content and the different things you talk about. Being a Geordie like my mum but now living in Colorado USA. We like to keep up to date with all things Newcastle. Watching your channel, we get to remember all the places and even learn some background and history. Keep up the good work and we look forward to seeing more.

Fantastic video, we will visit when we are over there because of this video. But there is a smaller marks and spencer in dubai marina now. Please make more videos like this.
Such a lovely market. The one thing that has changed over the years for the goodis the ‘heady aroma’ that hit you as you walked in from all the butchers. Tyneside life always has great content (like the market)
These regular videos are so good. In the olds days regional TV used to do this sort of thing. Pleased its not full of adverts, but you can’t do something for nothing, so hope you have some means of keeping it going.
Cheers Paul 👊🏻 I get paid for my UA-cam channel as adverts (that I can’t control) are at the beginning of all my videos now. I’ve rejected a few sponsorships now so as not to irritate my viewers but I gave a Ko-Fi account where small donations can be made for my coffee fund. 👍🏻
Very interesting video mate! Didn’t know they did tours down to the air raid shelters? I wonder when and how you would find out? So keep these videos coming!
If memory serves right, I once read how just prior to the building of Grainger Town being given permission that City had just completed the construction of an Opera House around the Nunn Street area. Realising that it could not be incorporated in the new plans it was demolished & I'm not even sure that it managed to host any performances! Personally, from the 60's / 70's I can remember the bodies of wild game hanging outside of butchers shops - not to mention a big stuffed Bull's head. And also the story of the hiring of Falcons(?) to scare away the pigeons which were proving difficult to shift by other means....
I used to find it amusing going to the weigh house and people used to take as many items of clothing within human decency to save a pound or two on their weight ticket
I used to go with my grandparents when I was little and watch them get weighed in the very early 1980’s. If they were happy about their weight, we’d go for an ice cream at Mark Tony’s 🍦
I have vivid memories of Grainger market as a kid. There was one or two butcher there that always had a pigs head either whole or cut in half on display. I guess to show freshness. Was always a bit shocking to me, even though i would go there many times with parents.
Hi Eddy been watching your videos for a while now! Loved this one, great way to showcase local businesses and I'd love to check out those air raid shelters. I'm friends with Angel and I'll show him this it'll make his day 🙂
