Caniço belongs to the municipality of Santa Cruz in Madeira. It lies at an altitude of 0 to 400 meters, around eight kilometers east of the island's capital, Funchal.
The sub-village Caniço de Baixo is a sun-drenched resort on the south-east coast of Madeira.
It borders directly on the Garajau underwater nature reserve.
