I think the biggest secret is that the band members put their egos aside, you can hear the bass, saxophone, piano solo, guitar, drums, you can hear everything and that's what makes it special and unique, not to mention her voice. And I don't know how much of you musicians like to listen to backing track/music and then fill it, not overplay it, they say "less is more" and they got it.
Well said, some musicians are very talented and they want everyone to know and will play louder and harder than the vocals to the point where you can’t hear the singer which is the main feature 😳
Yes, I always thought that a good singer MUST have also have a GOOD BAND. They are nothing without the other!
Now I know why you can sing the words and melody of “smooth operator” to any Sade song. It always fits.
She is an amazing interpreter, singer, musa, artist, diva, carried by an extraordinary, unique, exquisite, group of musicians…rest is history
Agreed!
Sade is one of the tightest bands I have ever heard. Not to mention she is just a Goddess!!!
Is not about the chords, but the rhythm, the intention and Sade´s magic
The intention to make money ya
Sade is a goddess
Man, you're setting yourself up for great disappointments... Do you know she goes to the toilets? Goddesses don't. Understanding that, once and for all, will save you a lot of money! ;)
Enjoy her music, though! :)
@@jph7957 that's a lie girls don't shit
@@ggthewhale Yes, they do! And on your face, too, if you're not careful! :D
@@meatyout you're hilarious :D but thankfully my fetishes aren't scatological
Sade write the lyrics and the bass player Paul Denman the music thats why all changes are so sophisticated
They all write the music
I’m definitely a fan of the “jazz and other cool stuff” format
Thanks Eric! More to come!
When I was first writing music I used these chords all the time, they're pretty powerful. It's interesting to see the same top voicings but different bass or arrangements totally changing the sound though.
I think a ton of credit has to go to Stuart, Andrew, and Paul for these hip variations. Not sure how much Sade has to do with the music arranging, but as a team, it sure it magic.
Saw her live in Vegas. She was amazing, as was her opening act, India Arie.
That sounds like the BEST concert.
The magic is her singing over top of it.
Agreed!
@@OpenStudioJazz :D I enjoyed the analysis of their songs in this video. Thanks!
Between this and Stevie you guys are doing great! It's nice to break it up from absolute jazz while still getting tips and workouts with quality harmony for everyday music. This channel is awesome!
Wonderful, Christian! We love to hear it. Thanks for tuning in!
In my mind, I definitely call this the 80s style slow love song chord progression lol! I think one of the things that makes it sexy is the lady Sade's voice. When I think of sexy singing voice, I think of her! This kind of chord sound can be found in a lot of 80s shows I think. "Moonlighting" and those other detective tv shows. In the 90s, I think the sci-fi video games called "Out of this World" (aka Another World) and "Flashback" also had this kind of sound as their theme songs. Anyway, this kind of chord progression makes me imagine a dark rainy night with pink or violet neon signs. Very relaxing and nostalgic :)
Brilliant breakdown Adam! I also love how you could hear the evolution of pop production across these 3 songs -- from Smooth Jazz to (almost) Trip Hop!
Thanks Javier!
These are also the chords to "All Along the Watchtower" and about a million other popular minor key songs. I don't think the chords themselves are inherently sexy. But Sade sure is!
No one asked me, still, her masterwork single is *"Sweetest Taboo."*
The song "Paradise" has a pretty cool baseline, and I think, it really grooves. It definitely gets my attention, along with "Sweetest Taboo."
@@kevinoconnor2921
Duly noted, Kev; I'll have to go back and give "Paradise" a good re-listening. Thanks.
Let me add “is it a crime” here hehe
Other songs with the same progression: All Along The Watchtower, Genie In A Bottle, Smooth Criminal, Layla, Night Moves, and many more!
In the Air Tonight
@@seanfitz81 he discusses that in the video...
Sade...greatest ever
Thanks, you made it easy to remember using the Diminished 6th minor third structure within each practice group. That was fun. Thanks.
Great to hear, thanks for watching!
I was in highschool. A lot of great music from that time. Talent....where did you go????
Man I would LOVE IT if we did more pop rnb stuff like this
Thanks Rob! We've got some more up our sleeve.
@@OpenStudioJazz I'm so glad! I loved this exercise so much I shared it with 2 of my students already :)
Great fundamental stuff to know. Thanks!! Great job!!
Appreciate variation of the same chords, especially with a progression of difficulty for the left hand. Groovy :)
Thanks for watching :)
Awesome practice! This is very brilliant to derive this 12 keys practice from famous & lovely tunes! In addition, like Mr Jourdain, you are learning diminished “brothers & sisters” at the same time. This is so great, Genius Adam!!
Thanks for watching, Francis! We're back with these every Tuesday/Friday!
Awesome lesson, great thanks. Keep these (deceptively) „simple” lesson flowing. Already forwarded to other folks tryin to learn the piano but who arent equipped to play bebop. Simple is (the best) key!
Awesome, thanks for sharing!
@@OpenStudioJazz now its been at least 5 times I went over the chords with you Adam. Great practice for a newbie trying to learn how to navigate the keyboard and learn chord shapes. More of such lessons please :)
Music theory is nothing more than a form of musical dictation, a really great one. It will not make you a better composer; but you will be able to communicate your ideas most effectively.
Thank you. That was great!
You're very welcome!

Sade's secret sauce: PRODUCTION
Sade, instant LIKE
nice interpretation thank you. Robin. producer and arranger. Sade
Great Friday workout Adam. Please do some more! See you at the GPS!
Thanks for watching!
in the air tonight, same chords?
Yes, but it's all over a pedal D.
When you played those chords, I thought it was Phil Collins, "Coming in the Air of Night." I guess if this was Name That Tune, I lost.
I had to look it up. On bass was Paul Spencer Denman. I want to know more about him.
Very cool Obrigado down to Chicago Gracias amigo, ขอบคุณมากครับผม or I would say thank you very much.
Great Content !!!
i play guitar this is so helpful thanks.
Happy to help!
great content as usual! would love to see some steely dan. aja, third world man...so many great ones
+1 for steely dan, or that great song Maxine by Donald Fagen
Steely Dan you say?? ua-cam.com/video/ITCrFGABVzg/v-deo.html
I also immediately think of Clapton's acoustic version of "Layla." ELO's Evil Woman, etc.
When I start to listen to the examples, Sade's voice takes precedence every time. Practicing keys moving in minor thirds is a revelation for me, a non-keyboardist.
Sounds like Collins' "In the Air Tonight".
10:30
Sade is absolutely amazing… you might be selling the contributions of the other musicians short
Do you think she/the band use this motif with intention? A major component of "Sade" is _simplicity._ I think Stuart Matthewman once said in an interview that much of the success of the band and its songwriting comes from the fact that none of the musicians are "musos"-meaning they're not overly technical. I took that to mean that they're not very 'theory'-based and aren't virtuosos.
I can feel it coming in the air tonight.
Thanks......
Great! Where does the drum loop come from? Or is it homemade?
😁genial 😁
Adam, really enjoyed the Stevie Wonder listening SESH the other day. Great stuff! And I absolutely love Sade!! Her music is definitely sexy.
Thanks for tuning in!
also Sing, Sing, Sing . . .... way before 1984
and very few are covering her stuff and that's a good thing
Adam!! You (and Peter) are doing such a great job with this stuff!! I always enjoy checking out your videos and - pardon me if I"m encroaching - find a lot of the material very inspiring (and useful) for my own students. I hope that's ok... ;-). I see you looked at some Phil Collins on this sesh...I know "In The Air..." is the big hit on Phil's record, but I urge you to check out my favorite tune from that record, "If Leaving Me Is Easy", with that GREAT Ernie Watts alto intro....unforgettable. The harmony on that tune (and overall arrangement) is so hip...Anyway, just wanted to mention that tune.
Yo! I don't know that song but I'll check it out. 🙌🏼 Honored to have you here with us Federico!
@@adammaness I think you're gonna love that tune....It's heartbreaking. Did you ever see the documentary about the making of "Face Value" (Phil's solo debut)?? It's beautiful. Hey man, bofyall some bad cats and I'm happy you're happy [I'm here]....😂🤣
“If leaving me...” is a masterpiece. I would have loved to hear it sung by Luther Vandross
@@mico5678 Mmmmm....I dunno....Some things just can't be topped (or re-imagined) and should be left alone. I do think Luther could have done it justice....but the thing about that song - other than the beautiful simple yet haunting harmony/melody and it's slightly oblique form - is that lyric!! Truly heartbreaking, especially when you realize every word is true; and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Ernie Watts' amazing intro (and outro) statements: his contribution is as important to the song as every through composed note on it.
It's very easy for many to give in to the feelings of this song and, if one's not careful, it can easily cross over into cheap (or gratuitous) sentimentalism. It's such a tender piece of music....the key would be not to over emote. I always say [that] there are [some] tunes that are so beautifully crafted, that all one has to do is put one's hands on it and they bring one home!! I think Luther might have been able to glean that [about this tune] and do it justice...but I'm too attached to the arrangement and the playing on this - and Phil's vocal performance too [obviously].
Great to read your message and connect with someone who also loves this tune; not many people know it....Sending you a vibe.
@@FedericoGPena I understand your perplexity ... this song is a miracle of balance and it would be very easy to distort it. Thanks for the feedback and have a good life 👍🙏
Very interesting! Thanks for not being a Jazz Puritan, Adam! :)
Too many jazz musicians and aficionados seem to live in their heads. Last time I went to a jazz gig, it scared the s. out of me. Really! Nobody was moving an eyelid (although the trio was really really good -- Olivier Hutman, Marc Bertaux, Tony Rabeson. It reminded me of Sir Ken Robinson's TED Talk "Do schools kill creativity?" About university professors:
"They're just a form of life. Another form of life. But they're rather curious. And I say this out of affection for them: there's something curious about professors. In my experience -- not all of them, but typically -- they live in their heads. They live up there and slightly to one side. They're disembodied, you know, in a kind of literal way. They look upon their body as a form of transport for their heads."
:D :D :D
I can feel it comin in the air tonight.....oh lord...
ps. how many things go 'up and down' when you think about 'it'??
They go up and down?
Adam, what are you using for the drum @ 12:53? Btw, love ALL the guided practices! Have to figure out which piano course I want to buy!
Just some loops in Logic. Thanks!
Thanks Donald! Shoot us an email to suport@openstudionetwork.com if you'd like some help picking out the best course for you.
Wow! I say these chords are truly sexy. Love Sade! You have busted a myth for me so to speak. Love this video very much. Thank you especially for a new piano learning player. 👏👏❤️. This is like one of the best video I have seen for learning chords progression.
Great stuff Adam - thanks. Have you thought of doing Elton John? There are a lot of versions of Bennie and the Jets on UA-cam, which he always does some interesting Piano on. Though just the original track would be fun..... Certainly almost the living definition of pop Piano!
100% agree. Sheet music doesn't do it justice, and the rhythm is particularly important.
Great suggestion! We'll keep that in mind
@@OpenStudioJazz and/or his introductions to "Take Me to the Pilot", which sometimes veer towards Jazz territory.
very good, very helpful, thanks
You are welcome!
Cannons fire for you starts that way too
What's your keyboard vst?
andrew hale is a genious!
Good to know. Sometimes there`s a singer at the jam session.
I need someone to translate this... I just started training myself on the piano starting with major and
Minor chord practice. Is it bad if I have no idea what’s going on?
If these people knew what they were doing, you wouldn't see them on UA-cam.
A succes was also, that they only used real instruments, enjoy the cool sound of the Rhodes.
The Rhodes isn't a real instrument. It is electric. The Piano is.
@@bazingacurta2567
You are right. My definition is digital vs. analog.
@@ABCABC-gv1gc And what makes an analog instrument more "real" than a digital one?
@@bazingacurta2567 please dont... have you not heard the term "analog warmth"?
@@dincerekin Sure I have, and why does "analog warmth" make analog instruments more real than digital ones? Does the piano have "analog warmth"?
Also: All Along the Watchtower
Is it Sade the one who makes the arrangements and compositions?
I wonder!!Because we as musicians shouldn't keep in dark the names of those that make the building for those, to seat on the top, as the singers.!
I don't think so. Sade is the name of the singer, but also the band. The band has been together for decades and full of very talented musicians.
Same chords that Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" as well.
Didn't watch, huh?
@12:05..reminds me a bit of Collins...
👌
Doesn't matter, she was a super star! Beauty, sexy, and a singer!
But loved..Sade #1....etta james...jewel.. . norah jones...fast as u can..oh yeah fiona apple..and more
so i guess ian didnt put it in post
Ian wya?
Interesting!... but wasn't that song called "sweetest taboo" ?
What did I say?
@@adammaness Quiet storm
@@rolandwyss Ah, I see how my title could be misleading now. “Quiet Storm Chords” is a reference to the Quiet Storm radio format found on R&B stations in the 70s and 80s. I thought it was a nice thread that “Sweetest Taboo” has the phrase in the lyrics as well as a literal quiet storm in the video.
Oh, ok....! Now I understand!👍 Thanks for the explanation.
(Guy from abroad that has no clue...😂)
@@adammaness btw - I have learned so much with your courses and your free online online content...I'm really grateful. thanks a lot for everything!
First 4 chords have Phil Collins vibe
4 chords in chorus of “In The Air Tonight” oh lord!
Can't see simillarity between smooth operator and other songs. Smooth operator is 1-5-4 other songs is 1-7-6-7
The chords for every Iron Maiden song.
I call this the "End of Stairway to Heaven" progression
He knows Sade is the band he says it several times. Hush.
Though I'm thrilled to see someone analyze Sade tunes not sure why you keep referring to what "she" does. Sade is solely the lyricist and vocalist, keyboardist Andrew Hale and her bassist Paul Denman were the primary composers.
Extra blue eyes for quiet storm chords? Flat 9s don’t get the same crazy treatment.
Sade is the band's name
It’s her name too so it is eponymous.
@@nickdryad her name is helen
@@KiloTrackzYeah but that's her non professional name. I mean. whose gonna ask "do you like Helen Adu's early stuff or her later stuff?" It's like Sting or David Bowie. Their stage name is what counts. Off stage David Bowie was David jones according to his wife and Kids.
@@nickdryad like I said Sade is the band.
@@KiloTrackz it her name too.
Well i reMEMBAH!
If you want to hear something brillant, listen to Dirtyloops "Work shit out".
The bass lines are the sexy.
Sade is Nigerian
i feel like my wife would understand if Sade gave me the sweetest taboo, but i'm probably wrong...
British rnb singer Sade? i thought her name is Elizabeth Adu and her band is called Sade
Her name is Helen Folasade Adu CBE but she goes by Sade Adu
@@keendreams88 ok so Sade is not the name of the band?
@@markosmi81 Her name is Sade and her group (if they still perform together) are called Sade. Much the same as many pop singers, like Madonna, etc. Don't use a separate name for the musical group.
It was Sade. Not the chords.
I honestly can’t remember hearing a bridge or modulation in ANY of her songs.
I don't know if the chords are 'sexy', but the front lady of Sade certainly was!
i guess it isn't the harmony what makes a song...but the arrangement. We are all different but our bones looks the same thing...
💔💔
You keep saying She, when you should say “they”, since Sade is a group and Stuart Matthewman and other band members are the main one behind the music and Sade Adu the lyrics
Most people have no idea Sade is an entire band made up of four members.
Helen Folasade Adu - lead vocals
Stuart Matthewman - guitar & Saxophone
Andrew Hale - Keyboard
Paul Denman - Bass
The other three are amazing musicians.
Wow, Sade can sue Phil Collins for using her chord changes
Depends on who used them first. You’re obviously referring to In the Air Tonight which was released in 1981. Sade is listed on Wikipedia as being active from 1982 on.
@@CygnusRoc nah, it really doesn't even have to go that far. Harmony is extremely difficult to win a lawsuit over because of how generic chord progressions ultimately are. They're used in thousands of songs. Melody is where cases tend to be fought, unless is a specific riff or bar
@@avr5439 Well even melody is hard to prove actually. Spirit tried that with their song Taurus vis a vis Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. But we know what happened, Zeppelin won out.
@@CygnusRoc for sure, it's not a guaranteed win, but just where most try. Chord progressions are too generic to really get anything for
Wouldn't normally say this but Sade in this context should probably use the pronouns them/they, as in the band
That not the exact chords changes. I found Phil Collins less sexy...not sexy at all.
FFS the musical language used here is centuries old. Sade has nothing to do it.
It’s so innovative though
