I don't understand why this video doesn't have a lot more likes and views. You and some "Kid" consistently make the best videos by far. I came here because I wanted to refresh my memory. I replaced my entire cooling system about two years ago, but the BorgWarner thermostat started leaking and showed a fault with the heater. It was part of a package from FCPEuro.
I would like to suggest that it's not necessary to drain all the fluid from the bottom. I used an inexpensive hand-operated pump to get as much coolant out of the expansion tank as I could, and then used it to get more coolant out of the upper hose when I pulled it. Pulling the upper causes more to drain into the tank and I pumped that out too. Finally, I disconnected the lower hose and had someone hold it upright while I pumped the coolant out of it.
I put the coolant in a clean bucket to reuse. Genuine BMW coolant is expensive and mine is only two years old and doesn't have many miles on it.

I bought an oem after market thermostat from fcp euro 4 months ago and it is already gone... so i have a genuine bmw thermostat coming in a day to replace it. Don't cheap out...just costs more to replace double time.

Was it a BorgWarner? Another OEM brand is considerably more expensive and there must be a reason for that.

Thanks for sharing this content. Just a note that the 4-cylinder engine doesn't need the fan/shroud removed.

I think the reason why modern BMW leak oil is the premature deterioration of seals due to high coolant temperature. The electronic thermostat opens at more than 90 C or even 100 C. That's also why the cooling system fails due to high temperature and pressure and also why plastic parts wear prematurely. I think putting a 87C thermostat would remeby all common problems. Please check the coolant and oil temperature with an odb2 Bluetooth scanner while driving in town and on highway.

The electronic heater in the thermostat housing is used to make the mechanical thermostat open sooner than it would on its own. In other words, to get the cooling system working sooner. I believe BMW engineers really know what they're doing with engine temperatures, but not the accountants and management people who decided to save a few cents by using gasket materials, vacuum hoses and some plastic parts that don't last anywhere near as long as the ones used by all the Asian car manufacturers.

so I've been to 3 different bmw technicians, and none of them seem to diagnose my car correctly, heres exactly whats wrong Hello guys, so I'm am frustrated at this point , Ive taken my car to many bmw technicians and none of them seem to diagnose my car in the correct mannor , my car runs smooth sometimes but then it starts to shake when idle , it sputters as I am accelerating, it feel as if it has no power, then at random moments it surges and gains power again, I've replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, oxygen sensors both up and down stream, the maf , the fuel tank vent valve, it has been smoked test several times, the SES light is on , I've spent a lot of money on this car, and it doesn't seem to be working any better, this last bmw service center I went to told me my fuel pump is "faulty" and that my fuel filter needed replacing as well. But could a faulty fuel pump and filter actually cause my engine to shake? It's crazy because no technician can tell me what the actual problem is.. I'm scared to spend another 400$ on replacing something that won't fix the issue.. Now I've check codes on my car and it says it's running both lean and rich.. How is it that possible? Also it does have a oil leak on the oil pan gasket, but I always monitor it and it doesn't seem to be leaking a lot. Does anyone know what my problem might be?

+randy sorto Have you replaced your fuel filter? Also check your injectors. Both of those items are fairly cheap.

+randy sorto sounds like you have a vacuum leak. check the boot that goes from the airbox to the intake manifold for cracks and holes. Squeeze it and stretch the little accordian pieces to see. If that's not it , google "disa valve failure symptoms e46" and see if that matches. It sounds like the DISA valve but i'm not sure without actually looking at it. Hope it helps
