Thank you. Great thread. The trick to get the pump off works great. You can also use the two screws that hold down the air box to push the water pump away from the engine block. Turns out they are the same thread and the perfect length.

I appreciate that the normal snafus that occur during maintenance (stuck bolts, dropped tools, stuck hoses, etc.) are not edited out of the video. Very helpful videos.

Great video, very detailed. I'm at 132K miles on my 02 325i. Just had my water pump replaced. Mechanic uncovered a small vacuum leak (thank god). Change the oil about every 6500 miles. Anything else preventative you could recommend? Any fuel or oil adds etc. to look for? Basically, any preventative maintenance advice you could give that the regular person doesn't think of, let me know! Thanks!!

drewfogle Hello Drew, Thanks for posting a comment. It sounds like you are doing a great job keeping your engine clean. 6500 is a good number. I am not big on any additives, just regular maintenance. Brake fluid 2 years, power steering you can easily suck out and fill to keep it cleaner every year, don't forget to change the diff fluid (every 50K is good). Thats a common thing that is forgotten along with tranfercase fluid if you owned and X drive.

Thank you for your video! You saved me 800$ !!!
My water pump went on my 2003 x5 3L.
So happens that I was pretty strapped for cash at the time. I called the mechanic and they wanted almost 900$ with tax.
After I watched your video I had the confidence to do it my self. I got the pump for 98$ plus tax!
Now my car is back on the road. And I'm very thankful for your video for without it I wouldn't have the ability to get it done. God bless you and your family!

Hiya, love your videos. Can you advise me here in England please. I've got a 2002 E46 Coupe and recently I heard rattling in what I thought was the engine. Shortly after I had to stop the car because the fan belt had exploded again. I changed the fan belt last year knowing that I'll have to change it yearly because I could not find a dumper to replace the damaged dumper.
However, while taking the fan and the housing of I realized the water pump pulley was broken and the water pump itself was unsteady to the touch. After taking it apart I noticed that some of the ball bearings had been dislodged and here is where alarm bells raised it's ugly head. Was the rattling i heard earlier due to dislodged bits and bobs from the water pump itself ? and if so was course of action should I take to clear the debris from wherever it has unfortunately been lodged ?
Any advice would be helpful please ?

Hello and Thankyou Very Much !!! Extremely Balanced and professionally done video on the water pump process. The little tips are also fantastic.... a bonus of years of experience most of us weekend warriors don't have. The only add you might expand on is to differentiate the diagnoses of a failed pump vs. a bad tensioner bearing noise? I'm about to dig into the job and was trying to isolate the actual noise....Just started making the dry, whistling bearing noise...2005 330ic auto 64,000 miles. In any case Im ready based on the confidence you gave me . Respectfully
    Deane

My pump was leaking through the bearings, I replace it and the problem went away.. However I now have a knocking sound that it's definitely coming from the pump area.. Not sure if I didn't install it properly or just got a lemon.. Anyways, thanks for the video, really helpful..

  • @camagalis

This is very helpful, if you have a bad water pump, does it affect the heater core -- as in no heat? I've had a continuous leak on my Z4 (M54) when it gets cold during storage. The coolant tank never leaks all the way, and it appears to be coming from near the middle of the bay. Going to pull the electric fan and check for leaking.

This video is very detailed, and you do a great job of explaining each procedure. Also, you understand that visibility is important and don't let the camara, your own hands or even shadows obstruct what it is you are doing. Kudos on that!

Great video. I loved it. I have 2000 740il and it's heating up. temp gauge goes from mid to just before red but never on red. I bled it and added more water. drove it and same problem except water came out of somewhere. I waited 4 hours and I put in gallon and half. water stayed in and drove it home 2 miles away. Don't know what to do. I can change thermostat or water pump if I have to. what you suggest.
