Absolutely superb! Great narration to. The streets look so much more cluttered now. Mostly because of cars, but also so much over the top street furniture such as signs, bollards etc. I think in general there’s more litter to.
Great to see that boozer survived - I’m planning a Sweeney pub crawl with me mates probably next year. As there aren’t that many I’m fleshing it out with Minder & New Tricks as a tribute to the late great Dennis Waterman RIP

My Sweeney memory is from 77 78 when I worked for British Relay Special Services in London. We had a contract covering TV/radio/PA systems in all THF locations. I remember being called out to the Tara Hotel just off Kensington High Street and realising it was the hotel where Jack had 'Ugandan discussions' with the American Air hostess. #goodolddays

Excellent video again, your attention to detail is top notch.
I was only born in 1974 so my first real viewing of The Sweeney was when Channel 5 started broadcasting episodes at 9pm during the week in the late 1990s. They only showed around maybe 10 episodes, but I was immediately hooked. Then in the early nouties, Network announced they were releasing the entire Sweeney as box sets on DVD so I bought them. Then soddin ITV4 decided to rerun edited versions of The Sweeney over and over again. Then Network announced they were releasing The Sweeney on bluray and I thought I'd hang on until all 4 series were on bluray, but they stopped after series 1 due to lack of demand - which I partly blame on ITV4 for their constant reruns. When Network originally released The Sweeney on dvd around 2004 it wasn't being broadcast on any UK tv channel at the time, fans could only view it by buying the dvds.
I still live in hope somone will one day convert all episodes of The Sweeney and Minder to bluray.

    • @Sweenealogy
      @Sweenealogy  3 місяці тому

Yeah I've got the 4 Network DVD box sets; like you I was hanging on for all of them to be out on Blu-Ray but alas, not as yet. I won't even touch the butchered ITV4 versions; Amazon Prime has nearly all episodes available so at least that's a streaming option if people want it (I do have a Prime sub, but I just watch the DVDs mostly).

I lived in London at the time The Sweeney was being made, and I often - as I'm watching episodes - flick over to Google Maps for a 'then and now'. I'm especially familiar with the areas around south London: Putney, Wandsworth, Battersea, Fulham, etc. I remember that 'Aussie' episode with Patrick Mower and George Leyton very well! 'Trojan Bus'. One of my favourites. "You say either, I say either... you say Geisler, I say Gysler. Either, either, Geisler, Gysler... I say it's time to get off!" Excellent. You probably know that the early scenes in the film 'Sweeney 2' were shot by the Riverside Cafe in Putney, just across from Kenilworth Court. I grew up in Putney in the '60s and '70s and I knew that cafe well as a kid. Long gone now. 'Minder' is another one I check out a lot as many episodes were filmed around Putney. Arthur Daley's first lock-up was in Brewhouse Lane, near the church at Putney Bridge. That's gone now. The Winchester Club (exterior) was filmed at a house in Deodar Road - number 200a, near the corner with Putney Bridge Road. Still there, and still recognisable. Great to see these vids. Keep up the good work!

This channel is quite simply the best thing on UA-cam. I always stumbled on Sweeney locations by accident when in London. For instance, I was passing the Copthorne Tara hotel in Kensington about ten years ago and couldn't resist popping round the back to visit the scene of the shootout with Billy Medhurst's firm (of course I could've gone inside and visited the scene of Jack getting lucky (almost) with the air hostess in Selected Target🙂

Fantastic! A note about the music used when Ray crosses the street to catch the 52 bus - it's entitled "Holy Mackarel", composed by Brian Bennett, who was also drummer for The Shadows. And indeed it was used as the Rugby Special theme tune.
Brian also composed a piece called "Chaseside Shoot Up" - also used by the BBC as their iconic golf theme tune.

absolutely superb! these videos are just great, how i miss 70s london, so much character compared to the sterility of today, what a show the Sweeney was, as you say the greatest telly show ever, john thaw is currently appearing in an obscure 1974 series called the capone investment(on nostalgia channel talking pictures) playing a middle class type, this character is far more like the real john but to me he'll always be jack regan as he played that part so well, he's been seen in the capone investment driving a lovely triumph stag as opposed to his rather shabby mk2 cortina and the red mk1 escort in the pilot episode(tina and escy are both fantastic classics of course like the stag) thanks so much, always a joy to see your stuff

    Hello mate
I don't know if you've done the Maida Vale / Harrow Rd area yet, but about 15 years ago, I was at work driving home going thru maida Vale and needed the loo desperately 😂 so see a pub called the Warrington on Sutherland Road in m.vale and i pulled up, went in ,and after politely asking to use their khazi went up a big flight of stairs and relieved myself 😂
Then 2 or 3 days later, I'm watching the Sweeney (series 1/ episode 6 - Night out),when Jack is doing a stakeout, watching a bank from the same pub 😂 obviously the pub looked different seeing it was filmed in 1975/6 but it was the big flight of stairs that I recognised straight away. The Warrington pub is still there but now a swanky hotel .

Thanks mate. Your location work and comments are magnificent and very entertaining. NB it was a pity that Euston Films chose only to use locations in the western part of London. If only they could have spread out to other parts such as the east end, which had its fair share of villains in the 70s - some of our friends of a mature age might remember the well known George Davis who gained incredible publicity in the mid 70s with graffiti everywhere proclaiming his innocence of robbery charges (I have a vivid memory of seeing "George Davis is innocent" on a railway bridge on Bow Road for several years as I travelled regularly to school on the 25 bus). The bronze consul 3.0 ltr used in the series is alive and well. Chap I know has it in his collection. Apparently he rescued it from a scrap yard. Now restored looks as new. The other cars used in the later series didn’t survive unfortunately. Excellent work btw..

Fascinating, the video came up randomly on my UA-cam feed. As a kid in the 70's and early 80s remember watching the odd episode on the TV. Recently caught up with it on ITV4 watching with a couple of older gentlemen when I was their support worker. Great detective work working out the various shooting (yes pun intended) locations, truly fascinating to see how things have changed in the past 50 years ( hurts writing that). Have now subscribed to catch up and get my fix of nostalgia. Yes UA-cam does sometimes serve up an ace or two unknown channel to lose an evening too as you explore the rabbit hole.

As it happens, St Elmo was on my most recent filming trip, and will feature in one of the next 2 location videos (depending on where I “split” then - I usually find 1 trip works out at 2 decent 12-15 minute vids.)

@@21whosonthethrone I expect it'd knock us sideways if we found out! I paid just under a tenner -which sounds mental when I think of what I used to pay for fish and chips sneaking out of school at lunchtime in the 80s; but at the same time - they were bloody lovely, and I'll happily pay that sort of money if the alternative is that all the old chippies have to close down because they can't afford to stay in business.

@@Sweenealogy When I was a kid in 1970, a bag of chips was a 'tanner' (sixpence old money), that was 2 1⁄2 new pence. Fish & chips would cost the princely sum of 5 bob (shillings) or 25 new pence. It was even cheaper up north! I'd spend the day looking for old pop bottles to take back to the shop for recycling & get one old penny for each. Six bottles was a bag of chips & scrumps!

Excellent, I really enjoy your videos, I'm currently working my way through the series on Itvx. I was slightly too young to watch when it first came out so only vaguely remember a few episodes. Funnily enough the one I watched last night ('Lady Luck') was one of them, the guy's alibi holding out because they didn't think he could get to the bookies and back in time while a souffle was being made, only to find out he'd been to the Isle of Man TT and had a motorbike in the shed! I look forward to your next instalment.
