I’ve seen you rage at lapped cars in races before, would you ever do a guide on how to lap and how to be lapped, including as many of the scenarios you’ve found yourself in through the years?
The best advice for lapping & being lapped, IMO, is pretty straight forward - Communicate your intentions as early as possible. No last minute decisions/surprises for others to react to etc. You dont need VOIP, chat, or indicators, just position yourself in advance so the other party should be able to understand your intention. Try and make the decision and the move early enough that the other party can see and process your intentions and theres a far greater chance of it going smoothly. Parking your car in the middle of the road gives a clear msg - youre either against the lapping here, or youre making your intention to send it here. You dont need the element of surprise when passing/being-passed. Be clear - communicate your intentions. Also, if your planning to let someone pass at the end of the straight - dont do it at the very end. Its beneficial to you both doing it earlier and dragging it out longer. Lift and coast so the speed delta is minimal but sufficient, and then tuck in behind well before the braking zone. The benefits is pretty significant. You both should be able to attack the next corner without any uncertainty, they dont approach the corner slower thinking you're not getting out the way meaning you both go through slower, theres FAR less chance of you tucking in badly and clipping them... its a win-win for everyone. Its safer, faster, and theres no uncertainty. Last minute braking and then aggressively tucking in to lose less time is filled with risks & time loss.
If you’re in a slower car, most of the time guys in faster cars just want you to follow the racing line, especially in the corners, they will probably just overtake you on the straight. Now if you’re in the same class of car, I wouldn’t know what to tell you. If I get a blue flag I just let off the throttle on the straights then tuck in on the corners
When lapping I've always given the driver ahead a couple of flashes when closing up and then when i intend to pass. Best done along a straight as you're intentions aren't to put the driver off just to make him aware you're coming.
Usually the getting lapped part occurs down the straight but if not communication is key. If you want to pass me for the corner coming up, line you car up slightly left or right of my car (depending on where the inside is) and that makes your intentions super clear to me.
@@reillyploplis7457 What I do when we have the same category cars is I stick to the racing line, out of the corner lift just a little bit so the lapping car is getting a faster exit, then wait for the lapping car to make a move then lift a little more so I'm overtaken fast, tuck behind and we off to our own merry ways.
I’m a firm believer that if you are going to sim race you should understand the fundamentals of racing. Racing etiquette, Allowing racing room, When to and not to pass ETC. Good segment

Jimmy, this was really good. As a Pro sim racer and a budding Professional Driver, I'd like to see more of these technique and strategy type videos from you. Keep up the good work and good luck this season in the Praga.
Very helpful series. I often play with my cousin who admittedly watches a lot more motorsports than I do, and therefore probably knows the rules better. I try to drive very clean and rely mostly on slingshot maneuvers to overtake, whereas he often just bombs my inside on brake zones. We often have crashes with maybe 1/4-1/2 car overlap where I can't really see that he's made a move on me, and already very committed to my line. We often crash this way, and can't agree who's at fault
Hey Jimmy, I really like this concept and I was actually going to base my channel off something very similar. This is very entertaining and I can say most sim racers would love to have incidents broken down and judged. You can do this kinda of thing better than anyone mate. Keep em coming
Our track day instructors told us the same thing about the passer being responsible for making a good overtake. I enjoy knowing it's not that uncommon of an idea
12:13 looks to be also a correction to avoid the grass on the left (but controller input makes the move too big). For it to be a defensing move it was too subtle I think, although he was cutting across the track "sneakily".
9:00 i feel like its the responsibility of the passing car(lambo) to be fully clear of the defender(audi) if hes gonna turn in. I dont think the audi needs to back out. On the contrary, the audi shouldve given slightly more room in the left hander
Isn't the rule of thumb that you need to be about 1/3 of the way alongside to claim space? A sliver of bumper isn't enough to just pretend to be able to go side by side on that corner
Just a really clumsy incident! You actually see similar to this quite frequently (in real life!) at this corner sequence but usually the guy on the outside of the RH'er knows to give more room since you can come out of the RH'er side-by-side and usually have the advantage coming off the corner.
But that's not the rules or etiquette of racing. It was the Lambo's corner - and clearly his corner - and the Audi needs to back out and concede the place. At some point the car in the lead has to turn in to make the corner. He was near as damn it all the way ahead and in no position to judge if contact was likely. On the flip side the Audi driver had complete visual reference regarding where he was on the track and where the Lambo was and in a much better position to see contact was likely if he continued on the line he was taking. And seeing as he was pretty much entirely behind at this stage it's 100% his fault. No question. No debate...
By the looks of it I would have leaned towards No Further Action. Reasoning being that the series I'm in has a rule for leaving space for other cars. The #46 was still alongside, even if not fully, so #25 can't force them off-track. But, #25 was the only one suffering damages in the form of a time loss, so No Further Action. Full agree on the first bump though, #46 should have left a bit more space.
@@Eat-MyGoal Hmmmm interesting! It'd be lovely if racing was that clear-cut - It's not! (No question. No debate...) Both cars could have and, if they were experienced racers (in a real car that they have to pay for!), should have got through the RH'er side-by-side with no contact. That would have satisfied the rules AND the etiquette of racing! On that sequence of corners, the pass wasn't complete and it was a bit silly not to leave more room for the Audi considering the Lambo would have come out of the RH'er in front. Again - clumsy incident!
Really not a fan of "popular UA-camr visits popular subreddit to look at content" as a format, but it worked with this one because of the insight that you give to it, Jimmy.
Jimmer, can we see more of these video's? Being a real life racer now I think your opinions will be taken more to heart than others. Also, as an iRacer myself I find it amazing that people not only defend a position to the death but, when off track they NEVER check the relative to see where others are and just pull out on them.
Makes me feel like that's the reason why people end up doing it online. You shouldn't be making these moves vs the CPU. Cheating your way to victory will always be a hollow victory to me. Whether it be against a real person or not.

Seeing your opinions and rulings on these (and knowing they align with my own opinion) helps to boost my own confidence on decision making!! Thanks Jimmer!!
I feel like at 8:00 The Lamborghini needs to be put more as fault as well. Like a 50/50 situation to me. As much as the audi should've backed out for the second part of the corner the Lamborghini 100% positioned themselves to take a racing line as if the Audi wasn't there. You can see that as the connect the first time the Lamborghini is perfectly lined up to steal the apex. I believe if they didn't connect the first time the Audi would've been lined up with the door at least and rightfully deserved the inside
Heavy disagree, going into the 2nd last corner (exit of vale) the Audi is nowhere near significantly alongside the Lambo to warrant room, he literally pit manoeuvres him, how can that be a racing incident?
"You must always leave the space". I do agree. Could the Audi back out? Yes certainly....but is he entitled to some space, I think so. He also have inside for the next "2" corners (half a corner and a kink and t1) so I believe it is a reason to want to stay there. It all is in the definition of alongside....in the leagues I race, that is alongside and lambo at fault. Other leagues and others may disagree. That is what I think about the simracing world is much more to the, must leave room side and I like that. Had the audi sent it in to be at that position it would be the audis fault....but he was always there so no supprise really for him to still be there. Had the Lambo cleared the audi and moved over and audi then popped his nose in then it is 100% audi...but in this...I blame lambo. Leave room, Lambo is in a position to get the better exit anyway so why risk it
Agreed. If you are side by side into the first corner of a chicane I would say it's only fair to leave space on the second corner even if they are not entirely side by side. You know he's there and you can't slam the door in his face.
I'd only disagree with the weaving on the straight one. "Braking the tow" should be allowed, and he only did one right and one left sweep, so not too aggressive. Then during the overtake he slowly moved to the right, to push the opponent to the inside of the next corner. That's where Jimmy, and maybe the FIA, sees him at fault. But it wasn't under braking and wasn't cutting right in front of him too quickly. He moved over to make the overtake harder and the contact 11:58 happened way before the overtaking car ran out of space.
Doesn't matter how slow the movement is, its still weaving/reactive defending AFTER already making a defensive move. Its not even an FIA thing, pretty much every series will slap you for this.
Just discovered you and watching your Sim racing judges vids, and I wanted to say : those good old Gran Turismo musics in the background are pure pleasure !
Jimmy's quote should flash up on screen at the start of Daily Races. "It doesn't matter how much faster you are than the guy in front...it does not give you the right to drive through someone" 100%
Enjoyed this video, reminded me of the times I've sat in front of my computer watching an iRacing replay for an unhealthy amount of time, clicking forward and backward frame by frame to try and work out who was at fault...
I'm brand new to sim racing and the racing community in general and these videos are great. Entertaining as hell and learning experiences as well. Your explanations are great and I'm learning what not to do without having to do it myself first
man this one was really cool, i don't know much about racing but i do enjoy it. don't know how much of your community are not knowledgeable in racing so this is partially learning abut it. some more content like this would be awesome, all the best jimmy
This was awesome, loved it! Awesome way for someone like me who is totally new to sim racing to learn etiquette on the track which would normally go unspoken. Would love for this series to continue!
I genuinely loved this video, mostly because of the actual real-life racing insights, code of conduct, however you want to name it, being applied and explained in great detail. You rarely hear these "unwritten rules" explained so well. Absolutely would love to see more of this, it's honestly a lot more informative than it is funny, but that's what makes it great.
This was rather entertaining, seeing your opinion on some of these crashes, and I would love to see more of this, because you essentially give a driver's insight on what's happening.
I love these videos. Since most of my experience sim racing was intentionally driving the wrong way in the 90s Papyrus NASCAR game and playing bumper cars in a tuned up AE86 in GranTurismo, it's refreshing to know that there's actual rules and etiquette to overtaking and defending... every single one of which I violate regularly when slamming into the AI.
That Mazda at 15:20? Seems to be a favourite tactic for some on iRacing. I had an IDENTICAL situation a couple of days ago at the exact same place. Car comes out of nowhere and uses me as a brake. Think I was third at the time. Really pissed me off. What makes it worse is that in doing that, they ruin your race but because of the angle they approach the corner at, they're able to make the corner. After seeing this, it's definitely 100% deliberate.
You should totally do an educational mini series like this on the rules of racing. I bet so many people here watch motorsports but once they switch on a game all their knowledge and judgement exits their brains instantly.
Thanks for this video. I am confused by proper racing etiquette a lot of the time as someone who only does rally. This video helped put things more into perspective in regards to overtaking.
Super fun and helpful. As a fledgling sim racer I'm a bit hesitant to get on track with real people because I don't understand this etiquette yet. Talking out these examples makes it much more approachable!
At 10:00 that braking zone is curved, the porsche didnt move under braking - it's just that corners like that have lots of different lines you can take under braking. It's like the penultimate corner at Malaysia, or China turn 1. Bit of an odd thing for OP to suggest in the title.
Lol, that last incident in the Mazdas. That specific move happens ALL the time at that corner on Summit Point in rookie and D series races if you leave any gap at all. I generally just assume it’s going to happen and proactively cover the inside line, so that there’s no visible gap.
Please continue this series Jimmer, world of sim racing needs it. Hope some of the guys I meet during my iR sessions will take a look and get some lessons:)
You've came a long way since I was simracing with you, agreed with you on all of these! Top man. Also moving under braking is stupid AF, you're putting your own race at risk, as well as theirs.
12:00 guy did a verstapen weaving down the straight.
My dementia ridden grandma could judge racing accidents better than Masi!
Of course, as he wasn't responsible for assessing incidents or giving out penalties
Jimmy's quote should flash up on screen at the start of Daily Races.
"It doesn't matter how much faster you are than the guy in front...it does not give you the right to drive through someone"
100%
Unless your in nascar at a short track
Still triggered? lol
Btw Masi was not a steward.
It's a joke.
?
It's a joke.
Fucking Max fans ruining everything
Actually really enjoyed the veteran racer's POV on these incidents, would definitely watch more of this kind of content!
This was awesome, loved it! Awesome way for someone like me who is totally new to sim racing to learn etiquette on the track which would normally go unspoken. Would love for this series to continue!
Please make a series out of this, this was really fun to watch!
This content is veeery cool Jimmy, your amount of experience really helps newer sim bois on racing "etiquette"
Ayyyy the video I suggested you make on stream got made! It came out just as good as I hoped. Hope to see more!
This was rather entertaining, seeing your opinion on some of these crashes, and I would love to see more of this, because you essentially give a driver's insight on what's happening.
This was really refreshing to watch, this would make a good series for the future!
I really liked this format. Its educational and wierdly fun watching you gooing through incidents
Please do more of these!!! Best video I've watched in a while. Probably learned a lot as well :)
Really like this Jimmy, would love to see this sort of thing semi-regularly 🙂
Very enjoyable, Jimmy! It's nice to get your perspective, based not only on your sim career but you praga experience also.
Super fun and helpful. As a fledgling sim racer I'm a bit hesitant to get on track with real people because I don't understand this etiquette yet. Talking out these examples makes it much more approachable!
I've learned so much about racing from watching all of these. Please do more!
6:00 An Aston Martin Driver not using his mirrors/being aware of his surroundings? Color me shocked!
At 10:00 that braking zone is curved, the porsche didnt move under braking - it's just that corners like that have lots of different lines you can take under braking. It's like the penultimate corner at Malaysia, or China turn 1. Bit of an odd thing for OP to suggest in the title.
8:23 I can tell you right now what is in that drivers mind. One quote from Senna. You know the quote.
Ending was amazing 🤣🤣
Lol, that last incident in the Mazdas. That specific move happens ALL the time at that corner on Summit Point in rookie and D series races if you leave any gap at all. I generally just assume it’s going to happen and proactively cover the inside line, so that there’s no visible gap.
I would be very happy with this turning into a weekly series! Very fun to watch.
Please continue this series Jimmer, world of sim racing needs it. Hope some of the guys I meet during my iR sessions will take a look and get some lessons:)
This might be the coolest idea for a video series and I haven't even started watching yet.
Great stuff! We need more of this!
This is a great video. Please make this into a series Jimmy so all of us can learn.
9:53-guy driving Lamborghini: if you no longer go for a gap that’s exists, you no longer a racing driver
What a great idea for a video! No idea if you’ve done this before but I love it.
great video. more of these! its rlly cool to hear your perspective
Please keep this series going, it's soo good
I would love to see this as a series
This is absolutely brilliant more of this pleaaaase!
New format and I really like it. Hope to see more!
You've came a long way since I was simracing with you, agreed with you on all of these! Top man.
Also moving under braking is stupid AF, you're putting your own race at risk, as well as theirs. Hold your line, feel free to try to outbreak them or set yourself up for a repass at the next opportunity.
Like always, excellent video! Congratulations on becoming a REAL LIFE RACE CAR DRIVER!!! SO HAPPY FOR YOU

"I may not be right, but..."
To your credit, 99% of people on that sub before this video have absolutely no idea what they're talking about
Yay! I was just thinking last night Jimmy should do another one of these videos. These are fun!
This is a really excellent and interesting video, Jimmy. More please!
This is so much fun and informative! We didn't know we needed steward-jimmy!
Very interesting video with some good insights backed up with explanations. Would welcome some more of these!
really cool format, would like to see more of these videos
This was way more informative than I thought it would be. Definitely gave me a new perspective about what is considered safe overtaking.
10:25 this is skullgirls soundtrack
Best 3 am video I've ever seen you definitely earned a viewer!
Thanks, This does also help me in my races, BTW, super nice retrowave song in the end, LOVE IT!
Loved the video, hopefully a once in a while type series!
More of these! These videos are always fun and thought provoking. Judge Jimbo has a good ring to it also XD
Loved it! Hope it continues, great idea for a series
