Exploring the mysteries of the Carenado Altitude Preselector

  • If you're anything like me, and you've been messing around with simulators for far longer than you should have, you sometimes come across avionics implementations that leave you scratching your head.
Today we look at the way Carenado have implemented a very common model of altitude pre-selector in the Pilatus PC12.
If any real-world pilots with experience of this hardware could weigh in on this, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing this. I wish they would simulate the hardware accurately this lack of not full implementation gets confusing. Not saying I want every aircraft to be study level but at least make some parts accurate enough so that confusion doesn’t get the best of us.

      My thoughts too.

I've been thinking for a long time now that the sim needs a level of standardization and Quality Control measures. A piece of the same equipment should work across the board in the same way no matter what aircraft it's in and what developer uses it. @Jonathon Beckett, the preselector breaks if you have the WT GNS installed in the Bonanza V-Tail, at least on Xbox, the "ARM" and "CAPT" no longer shows on the LCD screen is a great example. Carenado will likely take forever to fix this, it's easy to see why people hate them, they do it to themselves and we're the ones who pay the price.

First of all thank you for your wonderful videos !!!!
The logic of carenado, who understands it. But the PC 12 has developed into a usable aircraft after the beginning.
For me, the GNS 530 comes on with the battery, no avionics switch needed.
40 kph are reached with idle on the floor.
The height setting works for me:
    select height
    Press VS
right mouse button on the inside of the adjustment knob
    Set climb rate
    Arm wrestling
Display goes to set height, height can be changed
right click on the inner of the adjustment knob, rate of climb can be changed
Is not as described in the instructions, but you can live with it
it is like felipe writes, saw too late

I feel you with this preselector. Its the same way with the Bandeirante. The alt preselctor wont capture at all

I think I got used to it. I apply the following steps: 1) Set desired altitude. 2) Activate VS mode. 3) Pull knob to enter VS mode (will indicate zero) and set desired VS. 4) ARM altitude. It'll climb/descent to the desired altitude (armed) and will capture it.

Yep - but it's not how altitude pre-selectors usually work at all. Of course it may be that there ARE different implementations out there.

the Mooney is like this but the V35 works correctly. same dev!

Yep - Carenado put the same bits and pieces in many of their aircraft - and they are broken in similar ways :)

I have been flying this a lot lately, and it seems that the stuttering issue has been completely resolved. Though I am still interested in the SWS version, since it will have updated avionics.

Why not document this and file a bug report at Carenado?
As a software Engineer my self, I would appreciate such feedback and may be they were not aware of that and would gladly fix this issue. Let me know how this worked out.

Carenado doesn't have the greatest reputation for customer service I've found. Unfortunately I think they are among the list of developers who arrogantly think that once a product hits the shelf, they no longer need to do anything and it's in its finished state.

Perhaps a duumb question, but how do we select the heading on AP with the PC-12? I see the heading bug on the compass, but how is it adjusted?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

The knob is further down in the centre of the cockpit. I know - it makes no sense :)

@@jonbeckett perfect. Thanks. Your video helped show how to adjust the heading on the pc12.
