Building a Polaroid Back for the Mamiya RB67 ||| Analogue Studio Conversion Kit

- In October 2020 I released a video for Fall Polaroid Week shooting Polaroids on my Mamiya RB67 using the Rezivot conversion kit. I was floored by all the positive response I got, but a lot of people were asking me where they could get this back, or if I could make them myself, and I didn't have any answers because Rezivot themselves were no longer making the kits.
But now that has all changed, and here is a video showcasing the Analogue Studio conversion kit! These are still being made today, and they are a fraction of the price of the Rezivot, so that's really exciting news all around!

Thank you very much for this. I got a Polaroid instant developer lab for $100 new in box today, and an rb67 is on the way, so i think this is on my radar.

Great video, the storytelling part during the build was spot on, I could really anticipate how that must have felt to accidentally break it. However, glad that you were able to fix it! Also, the last shot with the star trails at 12:28 is pure magic.

Hi Jess, I followed your advice (see below), contacted Alin, and today I received from him a FULLY assembled back for my RB67. When I looked at it, I was a bit puzzled at first glance because I did not know how to handle it. After watching Alin’s UA-cam video things are getting clear. By the way, my Eject Button arrived in black, not red! Greetings from Germany

Yay, I'm so happy you watched it! I felt really bad after putting out the first video with the Rezivot, a lot of people were disappointed that they don't make the conversion kits anymore. So when I realized that this kit from Analogue Studio was a possibility, I had to try it out... I was really hoping it would be the answer we were all looking for, and I'm happy that it is!

As I watch your infectious enthusiasm I can't help but notice your wedding band. So I make assumptions: your videographer is your partner, and he or she is happy to make you the star in your well produced videos. And that's what a healthy relationship is all about. I would know: I do the same for my lovely wife who incidentally is a Polaroid camera fanatic and who surprised me after watching this video with the disclosure that she has an unused Impossible Lab squirreled away. Now the search for a RB67 begins ...

Polaroid has never been my passion nor something I find to inspire me, but watching you talk about it and seeing your images makes with that media does. The best camera in the world is the camera that gets you “out there” shooting, and we’re all inspired by different things, and nice images is created with the media and tool you prefer. 😊 Thanks for another great video. I am already looking forward to the next one

Yeah, I think I ended up getting a lot of people excited and then very disappointed after the Rezivot video, I really didn't mean to do that! So when I saw this was available from Analogue Studio, I had to buy it and test it out because I was hoping to have something positive to share with everyone!

Awesome results! Glad you managed to get everything put together right. And yes, it is so much easier to take things apart than putting them back together! I had a Dell laptop at work that I needed to replace a video card in, got the machine disassembled without difficulty, and then couldn't get it back together!

Your Polaroid shots are truly wonderful! Every of them! Really want to start trying to shoot with Polaroids...just need to find a instant camera now haha
I've always been in love with Polaroid film, I have an SX-70 camera from 1972, and then two of the rainbow versions that came out in the 80s. I still love those cameras, but there is definitely something special to being able to use this back on my RB67!

@@JessHobbs Well, to be honest, my Polaroid week wasn't really successful. I loaded my SLR680 with a pack of film and after 3 photos it didn't eject the photos anymore. I shot another pack of Yellowchrome, but i'm not really satisfied with the results. I hope to get better results in October :-)

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! I managed to source my two labs locally, I think I paid $90 for one and $110 for the other, something like that. I do my best to avoid eBay, they always seem to be astronomically priced there. Sometimes it takes a little patience, but the right one will definitely pop up!

Pretty cool, I enjoyed it a lot and just shot swans with another instant film. Is there any of these kits for a Mamiya 645? I have the original polaroid adapter for my mamiays, but its kind of a waste to shoot FP100C on these.

I prefer my lo-fi polaroid back because I can use a prism with it, sure the image comes out "side ways" but the ability to use a prism was big for me.
Yeah, I can see that. I almost never use my prism, so for me I much prefer this Analogue Studio back because I like my frames better right side up! To each their own, I'm just glad that there are options available for all of our different tastes!

Personally, I love the black frame lines, especially when doing emulsion lifts! You won't get those lines shooting Instax Square on a Mamiya though, because the image size of the Instax is slightly smaller than Polaroid, but I don't know enough about the Instax backs to advise you.
Cool! I love the photos!! I have a Polaroid back for my Bronica but it seems that no one wants to buy it so maybe I'll give the film a try. Where do you get yours from?
Thanks, Julian, I appreciate the compliments! I had no idea there was an instant back for the Bronica, that's really interesting! I really like this back from Analogue Studio because I can use any of the Polaroid line-up of film (SX-70, 600, and i-Type), which I usually get at my favourite photo shop in Montreal, Studio Argentique.

@@JessHobbs I looked at some film and I'm confused by i-Type and another that says "not for vintage cameras". I notice that some come with batteries and my back doesn't have a battery in it so I presume that's what I'll need (but then, you don't have this camera so you may not be able to comment). Inside the back, it refers to Polaroid Land Camera. I'll probably not get film in time for next week so I'll try for the Fall Polaroid Week.
Never mind, LoL, the Bronica back requires vintage film that some people will have for sale but it will be old and expired.
@@jnrickards You don't say which Bronica. I have a GS-1, which is 6x7. I had the Polaroid back but it currently only takes the now defunct Fuji FP-100C, now very expensive. Plus the framing doesn't use the whole film, just a 6x7 corner. It was mostly used just to check exposures in the field. Good luck!
@@oudviola Thanks Mark, yes GS-1 and yes, I've since found out that the film is no longer available. Pity, it would have been fun to join in.
nice video, and darkslide warning on the back, but you need one more!- as this camera RB67 has a mirror lock_up knob on the lenses, this detaches the shutter trigger from the main body shutter button, aka the mirror ALONE fires on pressing the body release!!- so if you do M_up use a cable on the lens, and ONLY hit the back's eject button AFTER the cable release, as NOT doing this releases the mirror only, wasting a frame of this $5-00 /shot film!!, not a "smart move".

Dumb question but how do you take the photo of the polaroid? Do you just snap a picture of it against a white background with your phone or is it something else? Thanks
here comes a wave of photographers......
one fix, ask a local mechanic shop (machinist) to turn this on a metal lathe, also a circlip grove would NOT go astray either, bore the hole out to take it, then press the sleive in, holding it against screw force, by the circlip on the other side! ( or use contact adheisive { the two part stuff you mix with the icecream sticks- austa lazanya, don't get any on ya!! ( sorry have Autism, and could not forget this Mission Impossible 1 quote, as it applies here { the puty explosive they use in the movie}) } - one WARNING this quote does hold true, as this glue is ravanous, people have stuck fingers to wood, or to other fleshy parts of their body, and this is an AMBULANCE job!!! ).
The site says discontinued for the conversion kit?

You forgot one necessary and highly important piece of "equipment" for building these backs....a bottle of orange juice. Just add some of the alcohol and calm those nerves!!! :D :P :P It'd be good if you could make one of these backs to fit any MF camera, apart from the RB67.
Oh, don't use isopropyl alcohol with orange juice, though!!! Not a good idea!!! Normal plonk (vodka) will also clean the rollers as well, so use that instead :D

what type of polaroid film do you use for this?
My favourite part about these backs is that you can use any of the available Polaroid films! I usually prefer the SX-70 lineup, but I also like being able to use the I-type films to be more eco-friendly. Thanks for asking!

@@joaoamaral4148 I'm going to be taking a filmpack back, some broken instax mini cameras, my 3D printer, and possibly a small arduino and (hopefully) creating a new Instax Mini back for my 1930s 6x9 folding view camera. when I do it I'll document and share the build with the CAD files and any code, but for now I'm just sitting on parts and an idea
