- Hearing all twenty of these amazing snare drums back to back in two minutes is absolutely awesome. Alright, to be fair it's more like 2 minutes and 38 seconds, lol. But hey, twenty snare drums in under three minutes ain't too shabby right? I hope you all enjoy this wonderful mix of modern and vintage snare drums from my personal collection. 🍵🙏🍵 #snaredrums #vintagedrums

I love how the snare changes the sound of bassdrum!
RIGHT? That was the craziest part to me when I was editing. I didn't hear it at all while filming/playing but it was super obvious in the editing process. The hats tambour changes a bit too.
🍵🙏🍵
@@shootsbraw LOL
Guess I wasn't the only one who noticed that lol. You know I put on the headphones for this.
@@mikeslessons I feel the biggest change is from the titanium snare to the oak...the juxtaposition is so beefy!
Ok gonna have to get my headphones on cause i don't hear it!
Snareway to Heaven
Well done, well done indeed! LOL
Ok it’s one thing to sit snd listen to all these great snares and their unique voice, but hats of to the drummer who not only put it all together BUT tracked this whole video in over 20 takes and made it feel effortless!!!
Mike you are seriously THE MAN!!
Much appreciated! Happy to spread the word for amazing craftsfolk like yourselves :) 🍵🙏🍵
@@mikeslessons Hey Mike, There is a snare on the left side of your Hihat Can you tell me what that was please? I'd like to know :)
@@danalnajes That looks to be the same as the snare at 2:16. (The Gretsch 'Mike Johnston' signature Brooklyn Standard)
well made
This was so satisfying to watch 🥁
I love how drastically the characteristics of the kick drum change with the bleed of each snare..
That to me is by far the most interesting part of this video.
I would imagine it's the frequency/phase cancellations between drums.
I think, it is because the snare drum resonates on each bass drum hit.
It’s a really interesting topic ✔️ It also has a lot to do with how the snare pitch make us perceive the kick. There’s an interesting interview with Jeff Porcaro (floating around somewhere), where he speaks about this subject a bit.
All those A&F 😍😍😍
they are seriously magical
The Ludwig and A&F drums are 🔥🔥.
Yep. I’m going to need a 4x14 Ludwig from the 20’s at some point. Well done all around sir!
Thanks for taking the time to make this. The filming and editing are superb. All the work we don’t see really shows.
A&F brass 14x 5 , A&F Copper 14x 5 and the Gretsch brooklyn 5.5 - all KILL
Damn those A&Fs are just something else🔥Amazing playing Mike!🥁
2:15 Gretsch Brooklyn Standard was my favorite.
The A&F snares, that Dunnett, that dw birch is real tight, Roger's and the gretsch's.
Their all very unique in it's own voice for different applications.
I love how much different each of these sound! Can't wait to get my Raw Brass snare
You put a lot of work into this. Thank you! Black beauty is my favourite
what I like about this video all these snare have they own sound & personality
This is pure gold. It has value because it helps get a feel for what different types of snares can do in the same recording setting. And that the drummer is a master in consistency just adds to the value by magnitudes! Mike Johnston ladies and gentlemen!
Picture this Mike...
"Uhhhhhhhhhhh.....
Me drooling... you drumming... uhhh.
You make me envy..." (homer's voice) lol
Love that Mike Johnston's sig.snare!
Sleek, crisp, awesome.
Black Beuty, DW Birch and Dunnet Titanium were killer
Yeah man, I think that Dunnett was my fave from this batch, followed by that Sugar poplar snare. The doc Sweeney, and the DW birch also sounded great!
That Doc Sweeney joint was sweet.
ngl, I was kind of blown away by the signature snare. Thanks Mike!
That means a lot to me Daniel! Glad ya dig it
Haven't read all the comments, ... but, these snares seamless voices, .. the time and effort in 'tuning' each snare to a 'standard' tension was the real labor of love, here, ... in my estimation.
Salute, senor.
Twenty snare drums in...OMG I've been watching this in a 40minutes loop!!! hypnotic 🥁😍!
LOL!!! 🍵🙏🍵🙏😂
That Brooklyn Standard is it for my ears.
Goddamn A&F make some beautiful sounding snares
This is so satisfying to the ears!
Second to last one is my personal fave
Number 10 from the beginning.
DW CUSTOM 💖🔥👍
SUPER SNARE DRUM !!!
So nice. Thanks for this comparison. They all sound like snares but each one has some distinctive quality that makes it musical in its own right. I'm sure this took a lot of effort to put together. Really appreciate it!
Beautiful snare collection Mike! Loved the contrast between the sounds and looks of these drums! I see you're a fan of A&F! Thanks for sharing your collection with us!
I loved this comparison video. The characteristics of each drum really come through
Excellent video, Mike! Love the collection. Watching this just affirmed my affection towards metal snares. Man, those A&Fs are really unique - not just visually, but also in terms of sound - more grit, character, spread. Love it. Gottta get me one in the future :)
Straight No Chaser, now this is a snare video. Extremely insightful, I'd always wanted to hear a Dunnett Titanium compared against a black beauty and you've done that. Your Brooklyn snare sounds stunning, thank you for the video dude loved it
Cool! Such a variety of sounds and textures. Love the vintage snares!
What a great and incredibly informative snare drum comparison video! Drummers of the pre-UA-cam era (and I am one of them) could not have imagined that this type of audio and visual information would eventually be available - and at zero cost. We are so fortunate to have this amazing content at our fingertips, and so fortunate that Mike and other creators put in the time and effort to provide it to us. BTW, I thought the Brooklyn Standard had the warmest and most appealing sound.
My favourite was your signature snare, and I’m not just saying that to be polite, it stood out as sounding great against all the other drums.
That Slingerland Radio King...no wonder the great drummers of the past loved it ..👍🏿
Dude... this was amazing. I love these types of comparison videos. So useful
loved watching this video and listening to the difference between all the drums! thank you!
your signature snare is really really nice!!! i closed my eyes and heared it - looked at the despription and "yeah"
Eyes closed; it turns out the Mike Johnston signature snare was my favourite.
I must not watch this channel enough, because I didn’t know Mike had a signature snare.
Awe bro, you just made my day!!! 🍵🙏🍵
@@mikeslessons I can’t fathom the time and effort that you and Gretsch put into creating that snare drum, but it sounds like it was definitely worth it.
That snare is now on my list.
Neither did I.
That was very cool. Thank you Mike for sharing.
The drastic change when switching to the Brooklyn made me stop and look
Crazy, it was the Super Sensitive right before it that made me really take notice. Those two in a row were awesome
I also had to double take on what snare it was, tuned low and dry it sounded amazing.
Thank you so much for the video!
Whoa… that was so sweet! Thanks for taking the time to share that beautiful collection with us!
You are very welcome Cindi. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Oh yeah, that was nice to hear.
Love it Mike , awesome collection !!
The "Brooklyn black snare" is my favorite.
The DW was my second favorite.
Excellent! I love the linear groove you picked for this. Very pleasant to hear on repeat :)
Black Beauty, DW Birch, Brooks Steam Bent, A&F Raw Copper all sound very nice!
The A&F Rude Boy... how does that sound come out of that drum?! Amazing!
and of course the best sounding snare goes to mike signature snare
I've never seen a comparison done like this. Very cool!
The last two snares i liked the best...
Yes! So smooth, so mesmerising and so dangerous for my bank account. Incredible to hear the subtle differences.
Your Brooklyn Standard sounds so great. Mike. And awesome and consistent playing, man. Great vid!
Perfect. 💪🏻Thank you. 👍🏻
I really like the pattern! Aaand the first snare!
Thank you, Mike!
Stay safe and keep up the good work!
great job...and what a collection!
Not even being biased, I think the Johnston Signature was my favorite
Love the the brooklyn
A and F Raw brass for me🥁🥁🔥🔥
Videos like this are so helpful! Thank you mike. Also, I know I’m not logged in to the school much, but I SWEAR I’m practicing daily.
Fantastic edit. Wow! 🥁👏
Honestly, some of the finishes are just incredible to look at, but seriously well edited again Mike, the attention to detail to flick between clips is great, the overall quality visually is always something to aspire too, really liking that Bucks County Oak!
one of the best videos out there for sure Mike.. Thanks a bunch for this... Black beauty is my favorite ...
Thank you. You saved me thousands watching this video! Great comparison. Thanks.
Love the groove mike!
That must have been a ton of work. Thank you for giving us such an efficient way to compare these awesome drums. You know I’m a Bucks County guy and love that oak drum, but your signature snare really performs well. Still, that first A&F really grabs me. Great stuff, Mike!
I'm really not an expert in snares, but watching this awesome video made me realize how changing this central piece could affect my style. Also, so many interesting sounds that I hadn't heard up until now. Great work!
What a unique collection of snares!
Brilliant!
Could listen to this all day
omg I love them all..
Like a parade of beauty at a pageant...equally stunning!
Thank you for this 🙂
All the drums were tuned great and sound great & Nice Groove
This is probably the best video on UA-cam. Of everything
That’s dope!
You can never have too many, I guess! Beautiful collection.
ALL these incredible shallow vintage metal snares PLUS the Gretsch Brooklyn & 6.5" x 14" Ludwig Black Beauty for me!
mine sounds like the syntax water tank.cheers man🤗
Oh baby. That DW Birch. Yum.
I really like Mike's signature snare. Glad I bought one. 😉 Also enjoyed all the brass and copper snares. That was fun! Thanks!
Some people like to listen to white noise or the sound of the beach…Mike’s drumming and this groove does it for me.
0:30 The Dunnet Classic is the best for me.
Also you're consistency is next level 🐐
Very, very cool. And helpful! My like (and dislike) was pretty consistent with each basic shell material. Thank you!
Very classy! Thanks
You are very welcome matthew. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Stellar video editing my Freind. They all sound great too.
The DW custom birch and Mike's sig👌
That DW sounds amazing!
Insanely hypnotic Mike! That Gretsch Br👀klyn th🤯ugh!!
beautiful video! salutes from phoenix arizona!
I love metal snares!
My favorite is the 1929 Ludwig Super Sensitive. It being from 1929 probably means there aren't a whole lot available at my local drum shop, though.
Definitely not of that one. That's a special anniversary addition and there were only 29 ever made to begin with.
My favorite as well. Such a distinctive, and present sound.
@@mikeslessons That's so sad. It's definitely time for a 2021 reproduction, and they should make at least 2021k of these. I need to hear it in more records D=
Really can hear everything with that one!
The Bucks County is gorgeous. I'm in love.
This turned me on BIG TIME! The Dunnet Titanium, the DW Birch and the Gretsch Brooklyn Standard are just wonderful drums!!!
Amazing video, thanks!
One of the first grooves i learned from you 😁😁😁
Jesus that groove is a delight to listen to!
Thanks a ton Mario, that means a lot! 🍵🙏🍵
