To ensure the most success, when you format the USB, you need to click the "view" icon in disk utiltiy, select show all devices, then you want to erase the whole USB, not just the volume, so you click on what's above the name of your USB drive, then erase, select GUID partition map, macOS Extended (Journaled), and whatever name you want it to be.
When you erase your internal drive, you need to do the same, before you select APFS, view icon, show all devices, erase the very top option in the list of devices, and use GUID partition map, APFS, and whatever name you want for the boot drive!

This saved me after a week of figuring out how to upgrade from Mojave to Monterey because I was stuck at "checking null"

After submiting my password it says "/Applications/Install macOS Monterey.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application."
    how to fix this?

It’s weird that apple still hasn’t made a wizard to do this. So many people do clean installs, you’d think they’d just add it as an option within the installer itself.

If you have error "APFS disks may not be used as bootable install media" make sure your Internal Disk is not called "Untitled". Choose a different name instead.

Most of this worked for me except I went to erase the main hard drive, I had to drives listed by the same name, except one said data. So I deleted both of them but had to enter my Apple ID to proceed with one of them. towards the end it told me I needed to download an update to proceed with the install which I ignored the first time and it messed things up. So I had to backtrack and start over at the hold-option startup. I think I got lucky and ended up at a screen that eventually allowed me to boot from the attached Monterey thumb Drive

How do I downgrade from Ventura if the App Store link doesn't work because it's an older version?

UA-camrs beware: this video is an advertisement for the "Clean my mac" software which will ask you to pay money in order to proceed with the cleaning.

I have a new Mac Studio (2202) M1 Max 32GB, macOS Monterey 12.6.1. Purchased I have a SanDisk 4TB Extreme Pro Portable SSD/formatted to APFS. I installed MacOS Monterey 12.6.1 on the SanDisk 4TB Extreme Pro Portable SSD, using my Macbook Air. When I try to boot off the Sandisk drive via my Mac Studio, I am not able or allowed to do so. When I attempt to use Startup Disk in System Preferences, I am able to select the SanDisk drive, "HOWEVER", when I press restart, I get this message..."Unable to set startup disk
An error occurred while setting “Untitled” as the startup disk: The operation couldn’t be completed. (SDErrorDomain error 108.)"
When I turn on my Mac Studio, while holding the power button for 30sec, I see both the Mac internal drive, and my external Sandisk drive, but I am NOT able to boot from it. Selecting the options logo puts me in recovery mode. I have already selected the Utilities Drop Down menu and selected "Startup Security Utility'', I have "Reduced Security" Checked off, "Allows any version of signed operating system software ever trusted by Apple to run"
Can you tell me how to set my Mac Studio to boot off of the SanDisk 4TB Extreme Pro Portable SSD without all these roadblocks....

Installed OS High Sierra and startup options shows both User and Disk as options. How do I remove the disk and only show the user on startup login options?

Surely you just use the erase all content and settings thats now available preventing the whole download step? After backup of course. You then can migrate just the user settings from the cloned back up using migration assistant.... NOTHING ELSE. Then you download or login to all apps, services and move across and external files like pics and video and such like. The way you explain is way to complicated
