- PTG Reamer and Indicating rod and bushings are top notch tools for a Gunsmith. These are a must have in my opinion if you want to get the barrel dialed in and cut to perfection. The live pilot is the way to go, there are a ton of reasons why, but the ability to fit to a perfect barrel is the main reason.

Im in precision machining in college this is what I want to do! Our teacher looked up the reloading specs on an A.R. and we made some bullet keychains of the 5.56. I love this stuff!

Try a 16 lb sledgehammer so you can relly get that range rod in the barrel snug.

That's some involved set up there friend. Love this stuff, suppose after you have done a few, like anything else it kind of becomes second nature. Can't wait to see the final product. Cool video
avid huntr1016 it definitely gets faster and easier the more you do it..! But it still takes time either way.
Got a suggestion. Use two indicators. one on either end of your rod. It would make your set up a bit quicker.
I actually do that, I use it both ways but I'm finding myself using it more on both ends
You look like you know what the hell you're doing a lot of gunsmiths nowadays don't. I would love to have a barrel built by you. It probably go on my model 10 Savage in a 6.5 Creedmoor. I would love a 26-inch Barrel on that. But then I'm really wanting to build myself a 6.5 PRC after harvest this winter

I wish you would have shown you getting it all the way indicated in and removing your grizzly range rod from the bore then reinserting it without changing anything else. Every time you remove the indicating rod and replace it you’ll have to go through the whole process of indicating again. Is it ever truly indicated when using grizzly rods? No, Not if it can’t be repeated. The truth of it is, is that It’s pretty close and the reamers follows the bore. If you don’t agree make a video of you getting the same tir after removing and then replacing your indicating rod and showing the reading on your dial test indicator. Great video man

Would you be better off using a floating reamer holder instead of relying on the accuracy of the tailstock alignment ? Just curious.
The floating reamer follows the bore better, the bore has internal deflection so I find the final chamber to be more inline with the actual bore. Just my 2 cents
How does that reamer holder work compared to the traditional lathe dog? Sometimes we get some chatter going when cutting the new 5R grooved bores. A floating reamer holder for regular round holes works but you loose the "feel" of hand holding

How important is centering the the machine since it has the pilot and also wiggle room behind the reamer?
Could 4 or 5 thousandths be enough?
I was watching a gunsmith video on chambering. He was indicating on the outside of the barrel and bragging about only having .001" of runout.

Richard Witt I don’t have them right this minute but anytime a customer asks that I build something I don’t have a problem buying the tools, I’ll use it more than once.!
In your opinion what bullet wieght is best for 6.5 creedmore ?? I Shot a medium size buck 140 lbs week ago was not impressed with overall performance. Did drop the deer but the bullet broke apart from jacket( not caliber fault but bullet type ) and didn't make complete pass through ( was a neck through shoulder shot ) I was shooting 120 grain Winchesters and shot was close at 60 or so yards going to load some for it and some test before next year's season

I have a barrel chambered in 458 Socom, and want to know if I can use something at home to re-ream the chamber by hand......problem im having is that when you send the charging handle home, you cannot get the round back out of the chamber unless you use a rod down the barrel to punch it out
Mark Hipwell sounds like you have bigger problems. If you ream the chamber, you’ll change the headspace so you’d need to cut more than just the chamber.
@@vaughnprecision Just what i thought.....the bullet has a wear ring half way down the tip and the brass has scuffing marks around it....is it possible that they sent me a barrel chambered in 450 and not 458??

Can you start out with a 6.5 CM and ream it to a 6.5x06 assuming it was a large action?
Big Gee I suspect you can, but you’d have to look up the case dimensions to be sure. As long as the CM case diameter is slightly smaller yes you could.
Vaughn Precision thank you! I have seen a number of neat offerings for the CM, that I would prefer in a cartridge with a bit more capacity.
6.5 x 284 might be what you're looking for then
I have thought about the 284 and I could be happy with it, but bringing the 6.5 to the 06 just seems a bit neater, the mixing of the new and old.

Taylor Cannon it’s growing on me. I’ve got a little more work to do before I give it to the customer. But for the price, it’s hard to beat. The only thing I don’t like is the sharp edges it has, it’s not a deal breaker but it’s just a little different I guess, not use to it.

Yeah I am. My groups drop when the barrel warms up. My plan is to start with replacing the stock and if that doesn't fix it then replace the barrel.
And what happens when your indicator rod is bend? How do you know your indicating rod is 100% true? all your indicating becomes useless!
If you have a surface plate, a pair of V blocks, and a good indicator (and he has at least one of those), checking for a bent rod is trivial.
In fact if all you want to know is if it is bent, you could forget the surface place and improvise a pair of vees out of wood. Just support the rod at the ends, put the indicator in the middle, and rotate the rod. If it is bent the indicator will wiggle.

I see No benefit in that reamer holder...the floating reamer holder beats it for precision....u can dump that stupid thing.........a retired machinest of 40 years

That's no good you have 4 Chuck Jaws holding barrel flat and you are not getting any pivot action wen you adjust back spider......you need a cat head or the thick copper or brass wire method to get pivot wen you adjust spider.....you are bending the barrel forcing it to do wat I doesn't want to do.

Sam Alverio well, it’s hard to see but I actually have a brass part inside that allows pivot.
He did everything right, 4 jaw was slightly loose before adjusting the spider and brass under the jaws.......you aren't going to improve on it!
