I tried your techniques for lapping a muzzle crown and it worked great! It improved the accuracy of a ruger 22lr target pistol that had a tiny dent at the crown. It went from 1.5" groups at 10 yds to 1/2" groups at ten yards. Now I am armed with a little more useful knowledge thanks to you.
On larger rifle barrels, I usually start out with a fine stone and then finish with grinding compound. Completes the job in little time. Just my input, I'm older than dirt, but it has worked for me for years! Thanks for your video.
I've not had to re crown a barrel yet. I do have that lapping compound from valve jobs on Volkswagen Rabbit engines years ago though. I just used some this afternoon to sharpen my reel mower! I remove a wheel, take off the drive gear, chuck up a 1/2 inch drill, and run it backward with some compound smeared on the blades. Sharper than new in a few minutes and boy does it make a difference when the grass is as thick as it is now! Good video CW!
I've done it this way for years also . Like you said , it always improved the accuracy . I use an interior door hinge pin with the ball end on it and fine valve grinding lapping compound . It only takes about a minute to do the lapping part .
Very cool. I did a similar crowning job and put a small plug of material in the bore to keep the shavings and lapping compound from going down inside the bore. The rolling around is very important and you see it working to even out the taper and angle. Good video.
Thanks John! I thought it might be useful! I was talking with Treesablowin and he mentioned he had a jacked up crown on his brand new S&W 10mm. So I though it timely for the video. Glad ya enjoyed it!!
thanks for sharing, received a 300 win mag with a shortened barrel and was able to get the barrel squared and used lapping compound with brass. happy with the result, I just need to finish the project and see how it shoots
Great video. Try some chalk on the file to stop it loading. Also I take about 10 patches and roll them into cigarette shaped torpedos, and put them in the barrel before I start. Then as I work I push the cleaning rod up, the top patch pushes the gunk out and the rest keep the barrel clean. Just my 2¢. Thanks for the video!
Nice to see you are going one way with the file and not drawing it back on the peace being filed! So many people just don’t know how to use a file. 👍🇬🇧🏴
i agree with you that it doesnt have to be completely square, thats the purpose of the crown itself. However the Curve afaik has a full squared and crowned normal barrel that terminates just before that weird curved edge.
I have a ruger 32 H & R Magnum, 9" barrel, very accurate farm/varmint pistol, want to cut the barrel down to 5" for a quicker draw, crowning is a must, thanks for showing me how it's done.
Good luck man!! Its gonna be much handier! But Id first check values those loong barrels was not common and could bring a pretty penny if in good shape. Might benefit you to sell and buy a new one @ size you want with $$ left over.
Thank you for your informative and interesting video. I had made a trade for a UAR BRNO 22lr rifle that someone cut about 4"-5" off the barrel and unfortunately it wasn't squared off properly. After I squared it off I began to recrown the barrel using valve grounding compound and small brass screw. I think I'm done but have to get to the indoor range to checkout the accuracy. 😉😃😃😃
That’s awesome CW I have actually done that back in the day with a marble and Real fine sandpaper done a pretty good job but that’s definitely a lot better enjoy the video My friend

@@stevedriscoll2539 Thank you!! I recently picked up a Contender 22 barrel. It shot 2" groups. Looking at crown it was burred. Ten minutes doing this and now it shoots under 1/2" @ 50 yards!!!!
@@cw2a Thank you. Even after 3 months of struggling with group size and accuracy my name brand break barrel pellet rifle gives me about 1 inch groups one day, and then the next day the groups are larger and shift POI about an inch. I'm shooting with a respected name scope from a strudy table and a solid rest. I use my most accurate pellets and use recommended shooting procedures including putting the rest at the same location along the rifle. I haven't yet crowned the rifle, so I'm wondering if I do put a crown on the muzzle should I do something similar to the chamber while I have the barrel exposed. My goal is 1\2" or smaller groups consistently at 20 yards. Thanks again.
@@southernexposure123 Some air rifles are VERY sensitive to your hold. Try and be conscious of everything you're doing when it shoots well and try to replicate that. How tight, position of you head, your hands, your elbows even your face. It can make a difference on some guns. Some want to be "man handled" others like free recoil.
Not sure who made the vid, but seen a similar process using brass screws, drill, and a file. I used the method on a mosin, and did see accuracy improve. I may of used a cone grinding stone as well. Then at end I reblued the area.
I got 308 Win that I screwed up the crown. I have the lathe but this looks simpler, I just need to get valve grinding compound somewhere. One thing I noticed that my crown is 90 degrees while this method makes it rounded or maybe 45 degrees, I wonder if that makes any difference.
For those that have a lathe, make your own finishing lap from brass stock, cut an 11 degree taper in the brass stock, then use a corner rounding end mill held in the lathe tool holder on the compound; to machine off the lap ( rounding it off ) so it protrudes .250 into the barrel. After you have done the basic crowning procedure CW shows here, Finish up the final lap cut using this 11 degree tapered lap made as above with the finest grit lapping compound. Chucking the final lap in a lathe is best but can be accomplished by hand using straight in as possible pressure over and over (short duration pecking) till a distinct even wear band is cut around the groves of the rifling, not just the lands. This ensures a precise, concentric lap. The 11 degree crown lap is considered by many of the worlds top shooters, but you can experiment and use a lap degree that fits your requirements. Ive done this over 45 years as a gunsmith/machinist ..I used .500 brass stock....and have 3 finish laps....50-33 cal, 33-25 cal, 25-17 cal.....just saying.....
This is the first video I have seen on this matter, awesome! Which brings me to a question. I have a 2" snubby stainless EAA Windicator .357 mag that I had bought and had noticed after the fact that it doesn't have a crown, stupid question, can I use your method on this type of pistol? Thanks.
Hi there, does anyone think this something I have to worry about after using a bore snake over a few months? I would spray cleaning compound into the barrel from both sides to ensure the barrel gets nice and wet inside and I believe I always pulled it through as straight as possible. It was a hoppes bore snake with bronze brushes. The muzzle end also seems to hold a bullet tip just fine. Thanks
Anything repeatedly pushed pulled thru the bore is a concern. Many barrels are ruined with careless cleaning & shooting when too hot. So go slow as not to cause undue wear. Its not like your pulling sand paper thru but keep the snake clean. I wouldn't get overly concerned just use some common sense.
I have been using bore snakes for years without issue or causing damage. Just clean the snake after use, only run them through the barrel from chamber to muzzle, don't pull the cord out at an angle dragging along the crown, and throw them away when they get old because you do not want a bore snake stuck in your barrel. They can be VERY hard to get back out without the pull cord. If you keep these few things in mind, the bore snake should not ever damage the barrel.
