I gave in to the" hourglass body " Body standard and tried really hard to exercise and get that type of body and could never achieve it no matter how hard I tried and then felt depressed.
2 months later I deleted Instagram and it was the best decision I've made, I'm happy with the way I look and don't pressurise myself to look perfect, I have acne and scars and I'm proud of them.

I know the pic I used for YT is crap, and I' m not pretty. Oddly, I tend to photograph better than I look in person, so I chose a poor photo. I did modeling back in the day. When girls/women wanted to look like my pictures, I would say *I* wanted to look like the girl in the photo, too. It isn't real or attainable.

I mean Ariana isn’t perfect. She has access to the best personal trainers, nutritionists, makeup artists and stylists that put her in clothes that make her body look the best. Not to mention cosmetic procedures to have a more symmetrical face or to achieve a beauty standard. Which she has had done as well. And that goes for all/most celebrities! We shouldn’t idolize anyone either. Give credit where it’s deserved, be a fan of someone’s work, and admire them. But don’t idolize when at the end of the day they’re just a human like the rest of us.

I’ve had celebs be role models to me. Not in the way they look but just in the way they act and how confident they are and how they talk about mental health. I think wanting someone’s looks is not good because of the fact that they have access to things we don’t but as for the way they act, I think that’s ok. For example, Ashley graham has helped me be more confident in my body and sophia bush, aside from acting, has become an activist which is really inspiring.

I understand that influencers must feel really insecure to edit their photos so much however I find it hard to be too sympathetic because the whole reason they want us to idolise them and think they are perfect is because it grows their follower count so they can make money from sponsorships and selling us stuff. Like its one thing to lie about your appearance if you are a random non-influencer on Instagram, but when you're selling your followers products like skinny tea, makeup, teeth whitening, clothes etc people are buying them because they want to look like the influencer. Posting facetuned images makes the audience feel bad about themselves and feel not good enough, they want to look like the facetuned influencer so they buy the products and the cycle continues. It is really unethical in my opinion. Sure, you could feel bad for these influencers for having low self esteem but think of the millions of dollars they are making from making young girls feel insecure.

He has now a few dozen thousands of followers in our home country and while yes he is super fit, and well dressed and all what he shows on his Insta he definitely is not JUST THAT. He won't show the times when he sits with a worn t-shirt and shorts on, flip-flops reading sports newspaper or playing with the cats. It's very surreal to see that image of him and then divide that from who he is as a whole person. And not just about appearances, I know he is super insecure that he doesn't speak English very much, but never let's that be obvious on his social media. Weird world we live in.

Me too. And I’m also glad Stephanie went light-handed on the brightening concealer. Most beauty gurus tend to overdo it with the concealer, resulting in. A severe waste of product and messing up the work they put in the strategic placement of product by blending it all over the place.

Even my own pictures I try to not do anything other than edit the picture itself (lighting, contrast) and not myself. And I make sure to utilize my caption to say what's really happening in life versus a tacky quote.
I do wonder though if people don't like that and that's why I don't have many followers but oh well. Can't make everyone like you

What I find interesting is that when I was dating guys that didn’t treat me well, I’d take about ten selfies with different tops and darkening my makeup as I went, to make it look like different days, and I’d edit them, just so when they wanted a photo of me, I could send them a photo where I looked great. I’d feel good about it as I sent it. And even then, they usually didn’t compliment me. Then I’d feel gross.
Now the guy I’m with, I don’t feel like I have to wear ANY makeup around him. I’ve never edited a photo I’ve sent him. I just don’t feel the need to. And he thinks I’m gorgeous. He likens me to an elven princess, lol. I was really sick and had to cancel on him a few days ago (briefly it looked like I might need to go to the hospital) and I was too weak to even put my hair up in a ponytail. When I started to perk up a bit, felt half human again, I sent him a photo. I was exhausted, in a ton of pain, sick, and of course had zero makeup on, and even then he was complimentary.
I think I didn’t realize it until this guy, but like... it hurt when I felt I didn’t get approval from guys I dated in the past. But what I was really looking for is the validation my guy gives me, regardless of how I *look* in my photos. When I had a problem that changed how I looked because of a health condition, he said something similar to, “You’re more than your skin to me.” And the way he said it, of course; I was being silly, to think that some superficial change would be a big important deal.
I don’t really post on social media. I don’t like leaving out all the bad stuff that happens because of my health, because it feels fake. But if I post it, it feels like I’m looking for sympathy. And the only people who really matter are going to know without me posting. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Don’t go where you’re tolerated, go where you’re celebrated. I found that, and I intend to celebrate him every day for the rest of my life.

    • @Tabbyomwenga

You are so lucky you finally found that because trust me that's what everyone is looking for..they want someone to see them.. like really see them.. most people who got on social media felt insecure in their real lives and they found a way.. toxic way.. to escape and be seen and celebrated and it's temporary..I'm sure most influencers are insecure of going out into the real world coz they Don't have all their filters to hide behind..no matter how beautiful they may be.. they for sure have social anxiety

    • @AmaraJordanMusic
      @AmaraJordanMusic 4 роки тому +5

Tabby Omwenga Thanks, Tabby; I’m finding myself thanking my lucky stars every day. He really is amazing. I’ve been sick this week and he’s just being an absolute prince. I was finally able to see him (due to red zone limitations) and he’s done whatever he can to be supportive and help me feel better, getting groceries, staying up, making my food. I’ve not once felt like I needed to have on makeup. 😅 Despite feeling like an utter swamp monster, and probably looking it. 😂
You know, you make a really good point; if you get used to the filters and being able to micromanage what people see, down to the smallest details, it MUST be unnerving to go out into the real world and have people just see you, where there’s only so much you can do to ‘influence’ their perception. That kind of standard isn’t just bad for their fan bases, but for them themselves! Damaging. It’s really empathetic of you to think of it that way.

I think this video has a lot of good points. While listening I still found myself thinking “influencers are choosing to inaccurately portray their lives and appearance, even if they aren’t happy doing it they are compliant in a messed up system...”. I agree that social media is toxic for influencers and people who participate in general but I think it’s important to recognize the choice that people have in their curation of their online persona. It may be optimistic but I think we are all tired of seeing highly edited content and if we all just collectively stopped it wouldn’t be such a big deal to look and be normal. Just my non internet famous person thoughts - thanks for sharing yours.

I'm glad that your drawing awareness to this, it is sad that they have to go to such extreme lengths to "flex" and make out that they have the perfect face, body, car, house, wardrobe...and actually be miserable and in debt, also you drawing awareness to this can hopefully help people who have body image issues wishing they looked like a person who really doesn't exist, because they alter their pictures to the point where they don't even look like themselves, and some probably most of them don't even need photo shop or face tune to begin with, it's really sad and unhealthy, especially when they already have a great body and a beautiful face and go in and Photoshop and face tune to the point of being unrecognizable.

OMG Stephanie, you're so right. I lived with a very popular Social media influencer for about a year and got to know her very well. She spent HOURS editing her photos to the point where it no longer looked like her. It was such a conundrum to me because she's already extremely beautiful. But she felt like she needed a much skinnier version of her. She would ask me to take photos of her and I would take hundreds and none were ever good enough. She was a very sad person and suffered from depression. She would wait for the comments and if she got lots of praise and followers she would get excited for a bit. Every time she would meet people (or go on dates) she would tell me that they were mad because she didn't look like the photos on IG. I had so many talks with her about turning her IG into inspiring other women and doing a channel like yours (to be honest with her audience and tell them this IG life is not real) she agreed and wanted to do it sooo bad, but didn't have the courage. so sad. We still talk and it's still the same. She's still very unhappy, with thousands of followers who praise her, but they have no clue that no amount of praise is good enough and she's actually a very sad and depressed person inside.

I literally had to delete all SoCal media’s and Snapchat and everything, the anxiety and the horrible thought patterns it would cause was too self destructive for me. And I wound up relapsing again this year during quarantine because whenever I use I get skinnier since the drugs make me not hungry and/or just naturally I thin out from being unhealthy so I literally have relapsed after 8 years of battling this horrible addiction- knowing the pain and homelessness and despair that comes with the substance abuse usually- like I literally still relapsed because I wanted to be thin again. And herein lies the true issue that people have with altering photographs, they are lies.

These videos are the best! Honesty at its finest! I 10000% agree that it’s such an unhealthy situation!!! I try to follow more people on Instagram that favour showing their flaws and struggles and real ness! Not only does it make me feel a bit more human but it makes me think there ARE more people wising up and realising we can’t continue this facade. If we did everyone would look the same by 2025, and that’s SUPER BORING! Well done Stephanie !

You're inspiration for girls. You're teaching them how to be comfortable in their own body, skin. And we're all grateful for that. Love you ❤️😘❤️❤️

I think many of them have body dismorphia. They end up having surgeries that make them look ridiculous.

I love this series and love the hair color. It is important to deconstruct the idea of perfection. There is just a health body in the right weight for you. My main beef with these so called influencers is that when asked they deny photoshop and surgeries.
We had a case here in my country were the youtuber was swearing she didn't have a lipo while losing weight so fast. It was all just diet and exercise (these work, but not that fast). Then, she went to a show and was caught saying she did have a lipo with a mic that was left open by mistake.

I really love this topic of beauty standards because i often feel bad about myself because of the fact that i compare myself to other people. And btw, i personally think you look so much beautiful here, on youtube videos, than on instagram pictures. Thank you for doing this, it helped me a lot and I saved the videos so i can watch everytime i feel bad with myself.
