Good riddance to the messed up concept of the bleak and boring Snyderverse! It was simply the wrong choice to let Zack Snyder of all people force a wide variety of DC source material (he doesn't understand in the first place) into a uniform cinematic universe (the workings of which he doesn't unterstand either). Snyder doesn't unterstand the appeal of DC in the first place. WB should never have entrusted him with the whole thing. There were several problems to his DCEU vision. Studio interference was just one of them. Battering the variety of all DC characters and their uniqueness into one Batman-styled bleak, dark and grim, pessimistic bordering on nihilistic monotone epic was another one. For starters: Obviously, aiming for consistency between movies is the wrong priority when you can't even achieve consistency within movies in the first place. The main issue is another one, though: Artistically succesful DC movies have one major factor going for them that does not tie in well with crossover events such as Justice League. They come with great worldbuilding that suits each titular character, visually but also tonally: Grim & gritty Gotham for Batman; an escapist and epic island for adventurous Wonder Woman; a hyperrealist melodramatic setting for a sometimes darkly comical but ultimately tragic Joker; a very askew, bright burning, weird over-the-top colour scheme and production design for a psychotic maniac like Harvey Quinn who is the unreliable narrator of her own story; a circus/themepark-like attraction that is the Rock of Destiny for a comic family adventure movie like Shazam. Play these unique DC worlds to strength in standalone movies, don't throw these opportunities away in an illfated attempt of trying to bow to fans of Marvel's uniformity. You can do crossover events between entirely different world's in comics, because comics are an entirely different medium to film. Comics have a more abstract level to their visual narration, so a clash of not only cultures but also of aesthetics and points of view makes totally sense there. Absurdity and a sense of the grotesque is to a degree what draws comic book readers to the medium in the first place. But if you let different aesthetics clash in the medium of film, you will unvariably disrupt the flow and tone of the movie, and movies are medium that relies and builds on tone and flow. Breaking that flow and tonality is what makes a movie become jarring and weirds out the audience. You can go down the Marvel road. But then you have to sacrifice part of the uniqueness of each comic book character and their world and aesthetics to reach some common ground. It will make each solo movie of the franchise a little more boring, because you take away from its special appeal for a compromise. But it makes the overall soap opera feel consistent - if done right. What the MCU did right was find a MIDDLE ground BETWEEN all character's uniqueness. Snyder never did. There was no COMMON ground, no compromise that did ALL characters justice. Snyder went full-on Batman style, thereby making every other character feel out of place. Making every other character/background/world have to toe the Batmanverse line was too much of a stretch. It destroeyed tonal consistency. It drained what made the characters interesting as much as it drained the colours out of the visuals, even more so. Burton's Gotham was dark, but it was colourful and interesting. It was dark, alright, but most of all it was stark, expressive, vivid. Snyder made even (in the comics) bright and shiny and futuristically optimistic Metropolis look like a boring version of a bleaker, dulled down Gotham. This wasn't dark as much as it was dreary, jaded, livid. I'll say it again: Battering the variety of all DC characters and their uniqueness into one Batman-styled bleak, dark and grim, pessimistic bordering on nihilistic monotone epic was the worst decision ever. The Snyderverse stole everything that set DC apart from Marvel in a good way: The absence of uniformity which gave directors more freedom to explore stylistic niches and narrative nuances and an aesthetic variety in colours, tone, world-building. And at the same time the Snyderverse failed to copy Marvel's success, because that wasn't built on grim-darkness but the opposite: a bright-colourful tone. Throwing out Snyder and abandoning the Snyderverse was a good thing. It has freed up the characters to come into their own again.
And when we call them out on their BS, we must remember to vote with our wallets. The only thing that will convince these greedy corporate execs to admit they are wrong is dwindling profits.
well i mean us harley fans really are standing by you for the snyderverse and ayer cut, all we ask if for you guys to stand by us for more representation or female lgbtq+ characters because we cant all relate to the white cis straight men in comics :)
He'll probably just copy and paste Reeves Superman with a small mix of Zack's, mostly the action if anything. And of course interject all the PC tones.
the bigger problem is who they're bringing in to write the movies. Nobody at DC can write a comic book for shit, let alone a movie... seriously, Coates is a terrible comic writer. His characters are always one dimensional caricatures who only exist so he can push a narrative told pretty much entirely via exposition

Im past all this. Channels like yours is my entertainment now. Wether its talking about old movies and comics or video games , analysing new ones and having a fun time with the chat, im not expecting anything special from mainstream Hollywood in the next 4 years. Its like Gary from Nerdrotic said, we will probably have something close to dark times with at least 4 or 5 more years of low quality movies and TV shows and then a renassaince period, with fresh ideas. There is also the Star Trek TNG scenario, where passive forms of recreation start fading out. We have that already in some capacity, with the videogame industry eclipsing Hollywood and people tuning in to streams and podcasts more steadily. They can only be out of touch for so long. It remains to be seen if its in time to save themselves of its too late. I would say they are so sure of themselves, that its already too late for them.
Letting people have their way "for the time being" can lead to looking back later and asking, "what happened to that intellectual property we were told was so valuable?"
I'm genuinely surprised they didn't mention to try Dr. Fate. He/She can be anyone and doesn't necessarily have to be super true to the comic. His/Her powers are varied and can scale from city block to universal depending on choice of tone. Many villains in DC can be a threat as his/her powers are tied to the helmet. Also, he/she has the power to throw down with the big powers in DC, so technically Darkseid is the limit (maybe). I would very much like to see what a medium to big budget movie version would be like!

Its all ego, nepotism, fashion and basic stupidity. Creating a movie from existing source material is always annoying for these self-proclaimed masters of the universe; they always want to change stuff to suit their ego. If its successful they are hailed as hero’s, if it fails they can blame it on the source material. This isn't a problem WB has had with DC recently. This has been a problem going back all the way into the 90s. Normally if a good DC movie happens it is by complete accident. Most of the time there is massive mismanagement or spectacular misfires. Just look up the number of cancelled DC films. We almost had a Justice League movie and Wonder Woman a decade prior. Some of these movies literally weeks from filming until the plug was pulled. Meanwhile Marvel had their rights scattered to different studios and yet were still able to get their properties made into movies in the 2000s (some hits some misses) then was able to make their own studio to craft their own universe. Meanwhile WB has had all the DC properties and could have beaten them to the punch by years and yet couldn't get anything other than Batman off the ground (and they even killed that in 97 before Nolan). WB is a mess.

I'll say it again:
Battering the variety of all DC characters and their uniqueness into one Batman-styled bleak, dark and grim, pessimistic bordering on nihilistic monotone epic was the worst decision ever.
Then when core fans reject what they produce, they will call these core fans toxic, ist and phobe for not liking it.
WB have shot themselves in the foot with signing JJ Abrams. I highly doubt Abrams will save the DCEU
He'll probably just copy and paste Reeves Superman with a small mix of Zack's, mostly the action if anything. And of course interject all the PC tones.
DC will be left as a lifeless husk like Star Trek and Star Wars.
Abrams has an brought in an avowed racist and hater of America to write Superman. "truth, justice and the American way" will not be included.
the bigger problem is who they're bringing in to write the movies. Nobody at DC can write a comic book for shit, let alone a movie...
seriously, Coates is a terrible comic writer. His characters are always one dimensional caricatures who only exist so he can push a narrative told pretty much entirely via exposition

That is why when someone with real skill, such as Snyder comes along; he is in so much demand people fall over themselves to hire him. If Hollywood was filled with talent, Snyder would not stand out. As it is he stands out as one of the “very few” with actual talent, and I must admit not liking his style at all. But I can recognise greatness.
