I use 9's on my 25.5" scales length guitars (strats and teles), I use 10's on my 24.75" scale lengths (les pauls, SG's and ES339) and I use 11's on my 24" scale length Jaguar. This keeps my string tension feel the same across all my guitars.
I'll have to listen again to pick my fav. That guitar is primo gorgeous! Thanks for doing these vids.
You, my friend deserves way more views. Great series, thanks for the great vids. Keep them coming. Also see you keep approx same views after going mobile. Love your work.
Set 4 sounded the most honky, and I'd love that for a wild country music night, but my favs are a tie between 2 & 1.
Each has a sound for a purpose, of course.
However, I LOOOOVE your explanation of sound vs scale length vs playability. I'm an amateur luthier, so I will soak this up and use this knowledge with each and every instrument I work on.
Thanks again, Dylan!
Set number 2 was my favorite. I liked its bouncy, girthy attack.
Thank you
My Epi SG is strung up with EB Power Slinky anyway, so I decided to I'd give a D-standard tunig a try. It work, but I had to adjust the truss rod, cause the neck changed its bow due to the lower tension.
And I actually love the soul-stealing sound of the D-standard tuning on my SG.
I just played a fender jaguar with another factor to consider. It’s a super short scale length at 24” but there’s a long over-all string length. Trying to do bends on a jaguar is difficult because of this. I mean. Look at a photo of a jaguar; the high strings not only extend 3-5 inches beyond the nut, but also extend 3 or so inches over the bridge. Even though it’s a super short scale length the string tension feels higher than my longer scale epiphone Les paul special. But the special with its single piece wrap bridge has shorter overall string length. And the bends are way quicker/easier even with thicker strings.
Think of a gibson style headstock - the high e string only extends an inch or so passed the nut on the one end. If it has a warped single piece bridge then it’s even shorter
I am saying that the over all string length makes a big difference.
I'm still liking the sound of set 2 best but set 1 is a close second . I didn't care for the tone of sets 3 or 4 very much . Set 2 just stands out as a bit more bright & clear ( maybe it's how I'm listening to the samples). I'll go back and listen through different media to compare them & see if my opinion changes . Great video Dylan !!!
My tone really gets warm and bell-like, with radiant harmonics and infinite sustain when I practice consistently.
Thanks thanks Dylan for your video phey Dylan thanks for the video I'm just wondering if you have a guitar with a hardtail and you raise the tailpiece up away from the body does that affect the attention at all you know or the feel of the strings? Sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist guitarist guitarist
I can appreciate this info. As Mater of fact I plan to look it over a couple of times before I move in completely.
I was wondering if you could explain to me where the fuzz sound comes on a guitar that has no fuzz switch hucked up to it or the amp.
I have 3 super Strats , specs are very close, use same specs for setup and exact same type of strings, they all feel different. Some feel taught others looser and spongy. I think the break angles at nut to tuners, neck to body and body to bridge have an impact. These are minute but all my guitars feel different, which isn’t my goal. I baselined to my favorite feeling guitar, but they all setup differently.
Is it true that balanced tension sets allow the guitar to maintain perfect (or just better?) relative intonation when you use the vibrato bar? As in, "dive" from Em to Dm that's in tune.
Is the distance between the bridge and poles in the pickups for both single coil and humbucker style set in stone? Can a single pickup or both be mounted on some sort of slider for a unique tone?
I put 11s on a Les Paul style guitar in standard E tuning to have a good feeling for playing metal riffs :)
You Americans maybe don’t know it but we Europeans measure some stuff in inches too, all display sizes are advertised in inch as are wheels for cars, bikes and other stuff. We Germans even have a own word for inches called Zoll and we use the pound to measure meat in the grocery stores or when hunting but I would never build a house using anything else than meters. ;)
Thank you for not saying running the strings over or under the tail stop changes the tension. Or the break angle of the neck.
Great explaination. Much clearer now. I have a charvel model 2 with a 25.5 scale length and the strings feel so tight i can barely play it. I use 9 guage strings so you wouldnt think there would be much of an issue. Dont think its ever been playable since i got it and thats been many years ago. Not sure what to do except maybe tune down a half step but doubt it would make enough difference.
Use slinky 8.5 and half a step down. You will be amazed.
good stuff
I developed my "sound" by attempting to imitate various guitar players and my failures eventually morphed into "my sound". LOL!
I have a tele with gibson scale and when i run 10's it feels great bending but slows me down when i am playing chords so i need more tension. but when i go to 10.5's there's too much tension. i don't use a string tree and i wonder if that would help?
22/2 =11 so my centre isn’t the 12th fret so should I adjust my intonation on the eleventh fret?
Or should I measure from the heads to the nut and half that ?
I tried the balanced tensions NYXL set, it more or less felt like a set of 46-10's to me
What do you think about multiscale guitars for the purposes of balancing string tension?
My order of string preference based on sound is 1> 4 > 3 > 2
-1 sounds bright and rich
-4 sounds "smooth" and rich, a little less "sparkly" than 1
-3 sounds a little less rich, with more emphasis on mid range
-2 has a kind of twangy attack almost a little like a banjo
Another thing that is going to influence string stiffness/looseness feel is overall string length. Floyd guitar always feel tighter. Wrap-over tailpiece or string thru body to bridge feels looser than "normal" tailpiece set.
Looking at this video, man that thing looks really bright red. Is it just the light or is it that bright?? Your time is appreciated
It’s been like that off and on in Phoenix. My wife and sons have athsma and this crappy air has been really hard on them.
ELI5: two guitars, same scale length, same string brand, same string gauge, same tuning, comparable setups, same bridges, same tuners stlye. One is notably more "slinky". How? Why? Black magic?
What color is it? Haha
Fret size, material and the condition are all big factors. Bigger frets make the strings feel slinkier, because less of your fingertips are dragging against the fretboard causing frinction. Well polished frets feel like playing on glass. Totally smooth and effortless. Also fretboard material makes a difference in the feel. Some materials have more friction than others.
So far, totally by the tone heard on my cell, #4 best, #1 2nd, #2 3rd, #3 4th. Phone has pretty good music reproduction for what it is but still an uncalibrated reproduction, and like Dylan repeatedly points out, the person to instrument interface cannot be discounted
If the string tension is too low is it easier to break strings?
Built a partscster this year and went with a 24.75 scale length for this exact reason, wanted that slinkier feel.
I put 8 on everything.
Alex of Zachary Guitars (ask Matt of Texas Toast) has been selling his own "Optimized Tension" string sets for years - the tension increases progressively across the strings. It's clever, intuitive and very natural to play on.
Total smoke and mirrors. There's nothing magic about string tension. It's all basic physics known since the 1600's: scale length, frequency, mass per unit length (gauge). You can choose whatever tensions you want (balanced or 'progressive' or anything in between), simply by choosing gauges (exact same process as Zachary). 'Optimized' though is meaningless - it's a personal choice - you might notice no difference, or you might have a preference for or against. In any case, if you think your low strings are too "floppy", go up a gauge just for those strings. If you think a string is too "tight", go down a gauge (or half a gauge). Simple. Understand the basic science and you won't be fooled. A few string manufacturers publish string tensions for all their sets. A quick google search shows the Zachary guy's chequered history.

Sure - you're absolutely right. it just saves the hassle of going through D'Addario's string tension charts (published online) and buying individual strings. At the time he launched his ZOG strings sets, nobody else was selling anything equivalent. As you say, it's a personal choice. Personally I like them, especially for bass, although these days, I use NYXL balanced tension strings. As for the name - well, he wasn't going to market them as "Zachary Crap Strings", was he? :-) At least he hasn't claimed they're the best strings in the world, with unusual modesty....
Still like the 1st set best. 4th set probably a close second. 🎶🎸
I'm dealing with 3 Telecasters.
- One is an early 2000's Deluxe and the other two are Elites.
- All three have the same scale length (I even measured from nut to saddle to see if they matched and they did to a hair).
- All three have the same exact gauge strings (Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys with the bottom 46 string replaced with a 54 for drop tuning).
- All three are tuned the same (drop C).
One of the Elites seems to have lower string ttension than the other two.
It must be the action / neck relief or something. It's easier to play, but almost too easy in a way that is actually tiresome when slamming on it.. Perhaps because I have to watch my technique too much, where the other two are right at home.
I suppose that the string tension itself is the same, but because of something in the action, in practice, perhaps it changes the perceived string tension because of needing kes force to fret the strings and I can't pick as hard.
So far I like sets 2 & 3. Set 4 was OK but set # 1 I hated. It sounded too bright. Are those the stock pickups? I liked their tone. I find I love the sound of humbuckers in a Les Paul, but hate everything else about a Les Paul. So I'm building mahogany 2 humbucker Strat with a mahogany Gibson scale neck with rosewood fretboard to try and duplicate the Les Paul humbucker tone. Any suggestions?
we had smoke yesterday in Toronto
Dylan Talks Cocktails. No comment section on live stream so this is where I must post
.. hmm so that means I need lower gauges strings especially on the high E, B and G strings .. thanks for the enlightenment 😬
When he pull-up the guitar 🥰
i wanna Guitar!
Do you give away lefty guitars as well?
Guys help. No matter how hard I bend on B string I still get half note instead of whole note. Any tips?
Dylan...the tension feels different to me depending on how I set up my floyd rose...I keep it floating with low tension springs and I swear it makes the strings feel really slinky...does this sound right??...I’m sure it’s not my imagination!!!
Yeah, it happens to me with a Stratocaster bridge, when it's decked the tension raises
fun thing about scale length with me
I'm not from the United States, I'm from latin america, so we use the metric system
however, I don't know what is the metric equivalent to the scale length of my guitars, or other ones
lol
Set 1, I think.
I prefer the first set so far
Overall length of the string dramatically changes the situation, not only the scale length part.
Define “situation” Do you have data to support this?
How come nobody makes ultralight flatwounds?
Dan says he needs his 🧻 back.
Hmmmm........... I like #4, but then I'm a jazz kinda guy, so anything that sounds really bright and clangy isn't going to be for me, I prefer something warmer and more mellow.
I thought set number 4 sounded OK, and had long sustain; set 3 wasn't as good and sustain wasn't as long; set 2 was very good, clear tone, very long sustain; I didn't like set number 1, it was metallic, thin, and toneless - it just sounded bad to me.
As a side topic, one thing that has always concerned me is snapping off strings suddenly with a wire clipper. That just can't be good for a guitar neck. Try holding a 20 pound weight out parallel to the ground then suddenly dropping. See and feel how your arm reacts. Then do the same thing, except this time put the weight gently down on a table or floor. The stresses are very different. I always loosen strings to remove them, just to be on the safe side.
Ya know, being an 80s kid I expected to click on this link and see a boring video with no information. I got the opposite. Awesome job man! Like 👍
.. (sound of engine) 'let's go inside .. ..'
.. next scene still outside lol
My bridge is pending from the tension
All hail the Algorithm.
I am the firs
what is a firs? Like the tree? Not sure you could make a guitar out of that. Sticky all over the place.
