Thanks for a great video. I just re-installed my ignition barrel in place after watching your video WITHOUT rotating the steering column as you suggested. I simply removed the upper and lower plastic column shrouds, then removed the displaced barrell parts and re-assembled. A liberal dab of grease was enough to hold the small ball bearings in the dimpled base of the cup housing in the sideways vertical position, while I pushed the plastic rotator back in and then slid the copper contact ring on. As the average finger is too large, I held this assembly in place with a small flat head screwdriver while fitting the wire cap back over the cup. The whole job took me 30 minutes as a first timer. 🙏
@@allanflynn8026 Aha that’s awesome mate! Hopefully the video was helpful. Definitely not a hard job but a bit finicky with all the small parts. Well done on not rotating the column too! Hopefully she’s all sorted now! 🍻
I pulled my ignition board and light up surround out to put a blue neo globe in there so the key surround matches the dash. Highly recommended for any XR owner.
Thsnks for video. Done it over the years by kinda guessing but was great to have the close ups to remove guessing. I bought a BF ute about a month ago and had just been driving it. Sure enough, it popped out the other day. Of course i was kicking myself for just buying and driving. Over the years when getting a Ba or bf falcon one of the first jobs has been to take the steering column cover off and look how tight the rear connector is in there. It really pays to give the deformed tabs just a tiny bit more of a bend in as a maintenance procedure. Perhaps checking it yearly is a good idea IMO. Ive never had one pop out on any of the cars where ive remembered to check and slightly retension the tabs.
@@chrisgregory4796 Hopefully the video was useful mate! You’re right too, for the time it takes to get the steering column shroud off, it’s definitely worth removing it and folding those tabs over for peace of mind. A no cost preventative thing that could save a lot of pain down the track.
@ for sure. These are good cars generally but if you think you can just buy one and drive youll most likely end up on the side of the road somewhere. The back of the barrel will fall out or transmission selector cable will fall off or the transmission heat exchanger will fail, or one or two other little reliability problems will get you sooner rather than later. But with few little preventative tricks put on place they become very very reliable.
Mate! You just saved my holidays. My BF Falcon is my only transport and I’m due to make a lot of long trips over the next few weeks. This exact problem hit me last night and also blew the 20A ignition fuse. Rebuilt it this morning following your instructions. Hate to think how much this would have cost, including trailering the car somewhere to get fixed. Good on ya!
Hey mate… aha that’s awesome to hear. Definitely wouldn’t be a cheap exercise having someone come out and look at it for you. The fuse can blow when it pops as the copper plate can cause the wrong contacts to touch when it pops off at the back. Awesome that you managed to get it all back together mate. Glad you found the video helpful too! Cheers 🍻
Haha, I remember this happening to me while interstate last year. Was awful trying to fix it while the column was still in the dash, but got there in the end. Used cable ties to hold the ignition switch plate in place. Still works to this day. Somehow...
I'm a preventative maintenence type. I reckon I might pop my cover off and take a gander. I reckon you could bullet proof that repair by drilling and tapping for a couple of grub screws.
@@aaronhogan2371 Thats an awesome idea mate. You can buy a replacement inner housing which is a lot stronger than the factory one… that actually uses a grub screw to hold it all in place. Definitely recommend at least having a look under the trim and folding the tabs over just for that little bit of peace of mind. 5 min job.
Awesome cheers for that. Is it hard to remove the housing? I have the broken tabs so it wont spring back, but i have a spare complete column. Is it possible to swap the inside housing with out destroying it? Cheers!
@@12349158 Hey mate, hopefully the video was helpful. The outer housing can be a pain to get out so there is a good chance you might same the good one in the other column. Good thing tho is you can now buy just the replacement housing. They’re readily available on eBay for around $35. In the past you would have to buy a whole repair kit but so long as you keep all of the little springs and ball bearing etc the housing is all you’ll need and you’ll be good to go. I’m having an issue where my key won’t hold the on position and will jump back to accessory/lock - turning the engine off. do you have any ideas about why this might be happening? I can’t know for sure until I take it apart but I don’t want to do so preemptively.
@@jamesaustralian9829 Hey mate, if they were the same sized ball bearings I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to use them… can’t say I’ve ever tried that though.
Great Video, but Honestly what a joke of a switch system. Holden have a far more sensible format with switch assembly that's just clipped over the barrel assembly. The only issue with the Holden variant is the centre small shaft that breaks over time requiring you to purchase another Ignition barrel. That's the shitty part of the Holden set up.
Cheers mete… yeah you’re not wrong, definitely a stupid design. Not really sure why they went with this setup for the b-series. They revised it for the FG models and they never really had this issue prior to these cars. Weird
